Monken is not PJ lite, and the 3O should stay.

Agree 100% with the sentiment of this post. We had a lot of problems at the end of CPJ's tenure, but the offensive scheme was not one of them. Just because Monken runs the same offense as Johnson doesn't mean he would have the same issues with defense, special teams, and recruiting. The offense is what allowed us to win a bunch of big games despite having all of those other problems. Doesn't it seem really dumb to pinpoint THAT as the one thing we want to avoid?

LOL okay if you want a bunch of 2-star athletes this will fly. If you want 4-star talent well you're going to get guys who are thinking about their NFL futures. I never blame any kid for doing what's best for their future.
I totally agree with you Tampa BayJacket.

There will never be a way to vindicate CPJ to the CPJ haters. If our team does worse now, to them it'll be because CPJ set the program back, not because CPJ was better.

He's leaving the next person a 7-win bowl-bound team. The next person has enough to at least be a bowl team next year or the year after

I'm not a CPJ hater and I love option football, but even Gailey left the next coach a 7-win bowl bound team, with a lot more talent than what our next coach will have to work with.

I dunno. Our talent level both on paper and on the field is below everyone else in the ACC, even the teams we crush routinely. Our OL and DL, in particular, are very small. We lack team speed. I think the defense has a couple decent players but also some guys who would be struggling for playing time on most P5 schools. The offense has backs who run to spots rather than read blocks and find a hole. We have WRs that are bad. Do we have a QB on the roster confirmed who can throw the ball?

I say all this and I’ve always liked the TO offense. It’s unique and quirky but the long term erosion on our talent made me grow restless with it as the years progressed. In particular, I always wondered whatever happened to the run and shoot version of the offense he was supposed to bring with him?

tl;dr I like the TO but it does make recruiting much harder
We say that the triple option makes recruiting more difficult. I've said it, but I really don't know if it does or not. The data is observational--we didn't get this quarterback or this running back for some reason so it must have been the scheme driving those multi-star players elsewhere. We recently ramped up the recruiting effort with additional resources, but Paul is leaving before the effectiveness of added staff can be evaluated. There is always the chance that this coaching staff was just not good at recruiting. Not good at selling the school and the program. There is always the chance that the new coach and the new staff are "great recruiters" that move the needle significantly, regardless of the scheme that is brought in. We see it all over the country--some coaches recruit much better than others. Maybe that will happen here.

Monken is not CPJ lite but he will still be available in 3 years. Go big now. If it fails, then go get Monken.
Why isn’t Monken considered “going big?” He will be picked up by someone. Wouldn’t surprise me if a team like Rutgers goes after him.

Oh, for what it's worth, our fans suck. Every away game shows us how horrible our fanbase has been for the last 25 damn years.

I live near wake, and sometimes I attention wake games. They get better crowds with garbage teams and creampuff opponents than we do for primetime games against top 10 opponents.

Which coincidently, cpj actually beat top 10 teams here. Wheres the thumbs up and whiskey drinking emojis???

That’s cool that you attend Wake Forest games. How many Tech games do you normally attend?

Too bad you can’t back this up with facts, Wake didn’t have one game this season that had more attendance than Tech, but please continue to lie and slander the program you’re a “Fan” of.

Lie and slander? How many of our attendees at games are from the opposing team? Do you ever watch the crowds at halftime or before kickoff?

Our home game against clemson felt like an away game, and it wasnt the only away game this year on the flats.

The capacity of Wake’s stadium is 6000 less than the smallest crowds we ever draw.

Defensive Recruiting for a T-Option Team - Defensive players still want to play for a team that can make a good bowl or playoffs. The defensive players also want to be attached to a great team where they get confirmation for bringing their team to the point of notoriety. The team itself and its culture has a lot to do with offensive and defensive recruiting. The defensive coordinator and his staff have to make the Players believe in his scheme and prove it on the field. Still they want the offense to put points on the board so that all the games dont fall on the defense’s shoulders. *(Most teams run a 4-3 defense some 3-4 but mast is the same. You have a great Defensive Coordinator; staff and the players will come and shine!

Offensive Recruiting for the PJ Spread Triple Option. - There are some problems here. The Line, QB and wide receivers have the biggest problems being looked at by the NFL (IF) those players are looking for that after they graduate GT. With as many FBS & FCS schools that there are and as few NFL teams that there are there are many players that want a scholarship, a degree, & play their last years with passion & adrenalin highs. With the linemen Cut Blocking is great for the T-Option, but the NFL want pancakes, passing and zone blocking. The wide receivers are used mainly for taking the defensive wide out down the field, blocking or streak routs. The QB is a half back that should be able to throw & hit ant offensive back 55% of the time when needed or when the defense lets them.

In 1985 & 86 PJ was at GSC, under ERK' s OC. We had a QB, Tracy Ham, backs wide outs & line that could do anything the wanted in 1aa. In the 3rd quarter PJs assistant said - We have to open it up and let Tracy do his thing" Please watch the 3.4-minute video of the 2nd half of the 85 NC when GSC used a wide-open Run & Shoot passing attack to win the game.

PJ installed a limited but very powerful Run & Shoot passing package that both Tracy and his backs. could understand. In 1985 Furman had stopped our Triple Option attack in the first half and took about a 21-point lead. We opend up the Run & shoot and beat them!

Tracy wanted to be QB at Florida but they wanted him at running back. ERK took him as a QB. There is still a chance with as many Highschool QBs running some sort of option to get a QB for GT.

Yikes. Talon, you've got a lot of passion but no one here is pulling the strings. You're lobbying the wrong people

he's the only one here I've got on Ignore. No time for Southern fans who still think it's 1985 and that a high school offense is the solution.

I am certainly not "in the know", but what I have heard from Monken is that he likes being at West Point, his values align with the Academy's, and he's not looking to leave. What makes us believe that he would even consider an offer to come to Tech? I've never been to West Point, but Annapolis is almost hallowed ground and I imagine West Point is similar. Way, way bigger than football, and yet they play football too.
