Inexcusable Loss?

Collins is on a 7 year contract. He’s going to be here for AT LEAST 5 or 6 of those years. Might as well sit back, hope he figures it out, and support him in the interim.

When the time comes to decide his fate, then we can bring out the knives or not.
We'll all know by year three what Collins is.

As for how long he'll be here, it's probably five years minimum. Buyout for the contract is 100% of the value remaining if canned in the first four years, or $2.4M per remaining season after. It's not what I'd call a good contract. Which seems to be what our school excels at. I could see him getting canned after year four if we're still losing to FCS teams.

There is no doubt that the Citadel loss was humiliating and probably the worst GT loss in my lifetime. However, taking a look at some other really bad losses from first-year coaches made me pause a bit in passing judgement against CGC and co.

----
Gary Patterson, Pat Fitzgerald, and Howard Schnellenberger all lost to FCS teams in their first year on the way to pretty rough season. I'd say all three did pretty well after that.

Frank Beamer went 2-9 in Year 1. He struggled for 6 years before posting 23 straight years with a winning record, including finishing ranked 17 out of 19 years.

Bobby Bowden went 5-6 in his first season. Then he had 33 consecutive years with a winning record before retiring.

Kyle Whittingham took over a 12-0 Utah team off a Fiesta Bowl win and went 7-5. He recovered to eventually pound #4 Alabama in the Sugar Bowl a few year later, and lead Utah to the Pac 12 and increased relevance.

Kirk Ferentz went 1-10 in his first season. He posted 3 straight Top 10 finishes in his third, fourth, and fifth seasons.

Dabo Swinney lost to 2-10 Maryland in his first full season as HC. He went 6-7 the next year, punctuated by getting stomped in a crappy bowl by a USF team that had a losing record in the Big East. Then he rattled off eight straight 10 win seasons, 5 ACC titles, and 2 national championships.
----

This is gonna be a tough season, for sure, but we're gonna have to suck it up and look for positives. The coaches above were able to recruit in the face of tough losses. Hopefully Collins can do the same, while continuing to build a strong staff around him.
Nobody really understands how bad the O line and Qb play is. There is not much anyone can do at this point. Johnson left this roster in shambles. It will take sometime and people need to sit back and look at the bigger picture. If a fan can not see the talent issues, god bless their soul.

Tech fans choose to put up with too much öööö. Inexcusable, yes for now. Doesn’t mean that it can’t be totally forgiven and mostly forgotten later if Patenaude gets better at using the roster and Collins gets better at managing a game and strategy.

Agree with everything except for the bolded. Collins took over a 7 win team that went 5-3 in conference play. We're far from loaded, but let's not act like the cupboard is bare. At least not compared to USF, Citadel, or anyone else in the Coastal outside of maybe Miami. We have enough talent to be competitive with everyone on our schedule outside of Clemson and UGA. It's a long season, and I've still got hope that we can learn from our mistakes and get better going forward. Just like the coaches listed in the OP did.

I wouldn't say he left it bare because we do have some great athletes, and some of the missing pieces are not fully because of how he left it. Our best OL left and our best DL unexpectedly passed away. Those are things that are monumental, especially when you are already thin at those positions. But some of you aren't seeing or aren't willing to believe that the option scheme is what kept us competitive with the talent we had. Go back and look at the recruiting ranking numbers. We are more on par with the likes of USF, Temple, etc. than we are with the conference. Here's a look at the last 10 years recruiting classes compared to the rest of the ACC (14 teams):

2019: 8th in ACC, 5th in Coastal (ahead of Duke and Pitt)
2018: 9th in ACC, 5th in Coastal (ahead of Duke and Virginia)
2017: 8th in ACC, 5th in Coastal (ahead of Duke and Virginia)
2016: 13th in ACC, last in Coastal
2015: 8th in ACC, 4th in Coastal (ahead of Virginia, Duke and Pitt)
2014: 11th in ACC, 6th in Coastal (ahead of Duke)
2013: 13th in ACC, last in Coastal
2012: 10th in ACC (out of 12), last in Coastal
2011: 8th in ACC (out of 12), last in Coastal
2010: 8th in ACC (out of 12), 4th in Coastal (ahead of Virginia and Duke)

With those numbers, we should've never been favored, much less even thought capable enough to win the Coastal, let alone the entire conference.

Right now, we are sitting at number 22 overall class, 5th in ACC, 3rd in Coastal behind Miami and UNC. We also have a few big names left on the board and are pretty optimistic about getting a couple of them. This is also still year zero for this staff. Put together a few years like that and we'll be back where we need to as far as what's "in the cupboard."

Thanks for publicly admitting that you’re a cuck
You've already proven to be one of the biggest dumbasses on the board oh, so thanks for that.

All I'm saying is that there aren't many coaches who I would expect to do better than CPJ, given the current football landscape and the fact that both of our biggest rivals are literally as good as they have ever been. That's not a knock on CGC - it's just the reason I wanted to keep CPJ as long as possible. I hope Geoff Collins goes down as the best coach in GT history and posted this thread to say that he still can be.

Talent is somewhat of an issue but the real issue is what our recruits were given scholarships to do. This is an triple option team pretending to be a spread team pretending to be a multiple set team. The personnel are not tooled yet for what we are trying to accomplish

And it did not happen overnight. It has been coming for several years.

CPJs system had the knock on it. Besides everything other coaches used to recruit against us for D players they were able to add "the DC will be gone in 2 years".

The system did not allow us to recruit the numbers needed on OL & DL.

There is no way we would get J Griffin or the transfers from other schools we got if the old system was still here.

Saturday stunk, and this year this staff might be forced (short term) to do unorthodox things to get players in position to make plays.

But the other system was quickly dying on the vine. CPJ knew it and that was the reason for feelers to ut even after they embarrassed the hell out of him.

We are definitely seeing more excitement around the program, and we'll have a couple of years to capitalize on that.
James Bates talked about the energy of the fan base being different on the FSSE broadcast.
his backdrop was a virtually empty East stands - right before kickoff.

Now cherry pick all the crappy coaches who lost bad games in their first season, then went on to lose bad games in their second and third seasons.
How about crappy posters who have always been crappy posters. Or are you just going for pansy of the season award? You qualify for both. @Rodzilla giving you a run for the latter.

Sorry, I didn't realize you enjoyed losing to high school teams with high school offenses.
