Anyone have thoughts on PWOs? It seems like we are offering a lot more of those than we did in the past and are being strategic about it. Seem to be making offers to players from large schools that have a good football program and/or players that have connections to VIP recruits.

So is it different than in the past? Does everyone think it is a good idea?
It is an acknowledgement that the team is very thin, and we are building depth any way we can.

The key on how many walkons you want is how many players you can effectively practice with. You need a minimum to give your core players a breather in practice but not so many they get in the way and slow down development of the current players.

Collins runs a lot of development time, so he will prolly run more walkons than many programs

A lot of movement on the transfer portal lately.

There are no less than three 4-star QB's in the portal from either FL or TX (where we have inroads) who were in either the 2018 or 2019 class and have several years left. Eight 4-stars total.
It would be nice if there is a great quarterback interested in transferring here. Keep in mind that these are the 4-star players that did not work out where they signed. Maybe it was just a bad fit. Maybe they were overrated by the services. Maybe the grade monster got them.

Definitely. We all know the rankings are garbage, and a 4-star who didn't work out somewhere is more likely to have been overrated. But the sheer volume of such QBs on the portal should have our attention, especially considering they're largely from our primary recruiting radius.

Texas just had a top-rated OT enter the portal after his freshman year as well, and he apparently picked Texas over Bama and A&M. Coach Key needs to be chasing these.

A transfer QB would be good. I am not convinced any of our current QB' s are the long term solution and I do not want to rush Gleason. There are a lot of QB's who transferred and were very successful.

Yeah feels like half the Top 10 is rolling along with QB transfer starters.

Well, if they are rated highly and transfer here, the NCAA will probably find a way to make them sit out 2 years, while granting them immediate eligibility anywhere else.

QB is also more like kicker or punter in the sense that teams generally roll with one guy, so if you're #2 on the depth chart, you're not really seeing the field. Backups at the top programs are often still very good, and if they don't see a path to playing time in the near future, it make sense to explore options elsewhere.

Rogers, Gatewood and Tisdale are 4 star QB's with 3 years of eligibility remaining. It appears that Rogers recovery from a major knee injury is the big question mark with him. Rogers and Gatewood are much larger than any of our current QB's. I would assume we have someone on staff focused on the transfer portal.

From an academic standpoint it's difficult for a transfer (transfer, not graduate transfer) to meet our requirements to stay on track to graduate. This has been stated on a number of occasions by our coaches over time. But let's assume there is a (graduate) transfer that is OK academically, after looking at this year's offensive line, do you really think Tech would be an attractive landing place for a good QB transfer in 2020? We need to develop what we have (including HS recruits).

This is overblown. We have taken plenty of transfers from all sorts of schools, including factories. The only time there is an issue is with JUCO's.

If you are going to get a QB from the portal you would want to believe that he is going to be THE GUY for the remainder of his eligibility. Guaranteed starter. Head and shoulders above anyone else on the roster or in the recruiting pipeline.

Filling a one year hole, like Wisconsin did with Russell Wilson, is an easier decision than taking on someone with 3 years left. You better be sure he's the one, cause you are going to alienate current roster QBs and potential recruits installing him as the starter.

Bringing in a QB from the portal just to compete for the job doesn't make sense to me.

Agreed, because the portal goes both ways and when you bring in a guy, you very well may push one out. So it needs to be a high level guy if you are going to do it, not a guy comparable to what you have.

Yeah, it seems to me the best case would be a grad transfer so that he can compete and play next year. BUT a grad transfer wants to play for a sure thing: an offense that is well functioning and a team that can win.

As other said, for QBs with a lot of eligibility, they would end up competing with Yates and Gleason on basically the same "level". We do need more depth so I don't have a problem with taking one. He would basically be a 2021 recruit. I assume we will take a QB most years.

I agree. We do not have a 4 star QB on our roster. We will only bring one in if we feel and he feels that he can be the starter.

On the other hand we are supposed to be focused on competition. Given our current talent level, we should never be concerned about alienating the current players. We have good DB's and RB's yet we continue to recruit highly rated players at these positions. If the 4 star QB from Marietta wants to flip from Tennessee, will we turn him down because it may alienate the current QB's?

Yates was a Rivals 4-star QB, but it's fair to say his offer list wasn't at that level and I'm not sure how sold the staff is on him.

Bailey would be an incoming recruit, not a transfer, so that's a bit different. Always recruit the best prospects and let the chips fall where they may.

Yeah, Anthony Allen transferred in from UofL. I'm not sure what his major was there, but if he had a traditional "football" major than this should be a non issue.

Yes, we've had some good transfers from factories, e.g., Notre Dame (which is also an exceptional school) but "the only time there is an issue is with JUCO's" is false. Other than John Dewberry back in the 80s, I don't recall any QBs. Nobody answered the point on what QB would want to transfer to Tech until we've shown an o-line that can pass protect.

I think the "issue" comment was in reference to academics. There's no reason why academic requirements would be a bigger hurdle for quarterbacks than most other positions.

You're forgetting A.J. Suggs from Tennessee, perhaps understandably. Not following you on why it would be more difficult to get a QB admitted as a transfer. We would have gotten Fields in if he had wanted to come, I assure you. I am talking academically. And it isn't just Notre Dame, Michigan, etc. that we get transfers from. We got transfers from both Miami and Florida just last year and we even had a pretty recent transfer from the cesspool itself (JJ Green).

Our O-line and general offensive struggles are another issue entirely, and I agree we are a tough sell to QB transfers right now for that reason.

And Luginbill.

Lots of forgettable quarterbacks transfer.
