Are cracks developing in Geoff’s plan?

@Diseqc may be trolling, but he’s also right. We are not recruiting well right now. I’m aware rankings change and kids change schools, but as of right now, we are sucking.

While you ultimately measure recruiting classes based on the quality of commits (and, of course, what they actually end up doing on the field), I don't think it's accurate to say we're sucking right now. I don't even think it was accurate before the last couple big commits. The staff has a much better idea of how close they are with some of our targets than anyone on this board does, and we're early enough along that having a string of big commits can drastically change the outlook. But I doubt the staff just suddenly started to recruit "better" this week.

Collins was hired to recruit his ass off and raise the talent level at Tech. For the first 1.5 recruiting years, he seems to have done just that.

This year seems different. Is it COVID related? Or are some fundamental flaws in Collins starting to become apparent?

If Collins can’t recruit, then we’re screwed. These coaches aren’t gonna out scheme anyone. Especially not Paterdude.

Tell me more, Atlanta Bob.

No way. We just picked up a commitment from a player who had an offer from LSU. I don’t give a damn how many stars he has after his name, any player that is 6 7” 355 pounds Will be a monster to block once we coach him up.

I guess I should have said, as of what we knew right then, we were sucking. “As of right now” does not mean “as of 2 weeks from now.” Here’s to hoping we have continued success getting great players.

Lot of people getting real excited about some 3 stars

But the thing is we weren't sucking. We didn't suddenly wind up in good position with those recruits in the two weeks since that post. They simply hadn't committed yet, which is pretty normal for late April/early May.

I stand behind my initial comment, but it’s not worth arguing about. How would you assess our recruiting right now? I’m happier with it than I was two weeks ago. I heard we are about to get a 4 star. That’d be great. I believe we are currently ranked 46.

If we stay 46th, what would be your assessment of our recruiting success for the year?

46th would be an above average CPJ year. I would still be disappointed. We need to be T30ish every year with this staff, and I think we will be.

We won't. A lot of schools ahead of us with more commits. We jumped from 58th to 46 with 2 commitments and one wasn't highly rated. I dunno where we will end up because I don't know how many guys we are taking, but I'm more concerned about when we will be able to play than I am about recruiting.

Well your initial comment was stupid, so it's sad that you stand behind it. You can't judge recruiting solely on commitments in May. That's just silly.

And no, I wouldn't be happy with 46th. Apropos of my earlier point about recruiting, that some site currently has us at 46th means very little. Anyone really think Miami-Ohio is going to finish top 25 in recruiting?

#41 and we only have 7 guys. Only two schools ahead of us in rankings have fewer guys (#36 FSU and #37 WashU.) Only 5 schools ahead of us only have 7.

Way too early to be gnashing any teeth, although there is talk about a few staffers getting a fire lit under their butts in the last month because of a perceived slacking. No confirmation, just chatter in local cafes.

Looking at recruiting rankings in May is like looking at election results at 7:15 am on voting day. Seriously?

CGC saw this thread and got on a Zoom call with the staff ASAP.
