Official argue about the old coach thread

Well, FWIW, the avatar of PJ in his Twitter is still him repping the GT gear.
Like he said after he announced he was done, "I'll always be a Georgia Tech fan."

Wonder if he has moved to Arizona yet. He was not on the schedule of speakers this fall for the Macon Touchdown Club. which he had done even after he left Tech.
I had a former vendor rep retire about 5 years ago. He had travelled extensively through the United States. When it came to retire, he picked his favorite place....the mountains of New Mexico and moved there

In an effort to clean up all football threads going forward, keep arguments about the old coach here.

Feel free to argue about the current staff elsewhere.

The next 10 years of college football look to be very tough for GT fans who will remember Paul Johnson for 2 distinct things:

1. He could beat The University of Georgia!!! —-That may not happen again for the rest of this decade. I’d put the O/U of a Tech win against UGA right around 11.5 years now.

2. He left us with relatively the weakest college football roster we’ve had in over 50 years. That’s a fact. If you don’t believe me ask Stansbury why Collins got the longest contract ever by a new GT HC.

You haven't been here long so you probably weren't around to witness those rosters in the early 80's; but still this is one of the saddest posts I've seen on here in a while.

I've heard a lot of good things about how beautiful that is.

I was around. You are correct. Paul Johnson left us with relatively the weakest college football roster we’ve had in over 30 (not 50) years.

I think if CGC keeps us on track we will get a win over UGA before the decade is out too. Might require some staff changes, and us catching some breaks; but a decade is a long time.

It's exciting to think we can beat them again once a few position groups are righted. After '17 and '18 there was no hope in sight

We had plenty of threads for this discussion. I don't see why we needed another

The comparison to the last coach will end when Collins is fired for being worse than Bill Lewis.

The comparisons never would've began had the Previous HC simply left GT FB with the same level of Talent that was here when he walked in the Door.

Why isn't anyone holding him accountable for that major screw up?

Paul Johnson was 7-4 against Duke. If it were a season he'd go to a decent bowl.
How did he start - first half of his GT Career vs Duke?

How did he finish - second half of his GT Career vs Duke?

Seems like you love to tell half of the story.

CPJ's horrible in State Recruiting is what helped to build up Duke to where they owned him the 2nd half of his Tenure here with a lot of contributors that were academic qualifiers for GT , but didn't want to play in the Triple so they went to Duke and built up their Program from nothing.

Probably because he managed to actually still beat teams despite the supposed "empty cupboard".

Did Collins run off half of the remaining talent on the team? Cause cpj still beat more teams his last year than Collins beat in his first 2 years combined. I don't think even the genius of Geoff Collins can defend that record.

You could construct the opposite narrative with Virginia Tech. Johnson won 4 of the last 5.

It doesn't matter if Johnson did worse in the second half of his tenure against Duke. It's still an overall good record against them.

Duke averaged 7 win per season cpjs last 4 years. They had 2 last year, and only 5 the year before.

Did Collins magically undo the recruiting duke did when cpj pulled in some of his weakest classes?

After NCAA rules changes shouldn't a Guy that many around here call a genius on Offense and "great Gameday HC", shouldn't a Guy like that be able to simply adjust to the Rules Changes?

After all, all the other HCs did?

Can anyone explain why our Genius-in-Residence HC was unable to adjust to the new Rules?

Does anyone know how many AL Managers in MLB quit after they started using the DH?

I'll give you a hint:

The answer starts with "z" and ends with "o"

Also...why was it always the excuse that "...teams had extra time to prepare for us" when we lost bowl games? Didn't we have the same amount of extra time to prepare for them?

Outside of the stopped-too-quickly Pistol in 2013, did PJ evolve the offense very much/at-all during his decade here? If anything, it seemed to get less complicated with fewer passing attempts and more QB Keepers as time wound down on the PJ Era.

Having an overall win percentage one-one-hundreth of a point better than Chan doesn't give CPJ license to leave behind the mess of poor talent that he did, and your BS excuse of he won a few games here & there just doesn't cut it.

With changes in rules over blocking, he snuck out of town like a thief in the night maybe because he was looking a 4-5 wins and dreadful Recruiting in the next 2 years.

We should the thanking CGC for saving GT's Rep among HS Coaches & Recruits by taking the Job and communicating some semblance of hope for GT FB, because CPJ was communicating nothing to HS coaches in the State of GA about his future vision for GT FB.

You fanboyz have no idea how bad GT's reputation was Statewide among Coaches & Recruits by the time he saw the writing on the wall and just up and quit.
