Coaching Search Update

If you interview Deion you raise the price you have to pay for any of the other coaches.

How so? How would other candidates even know what you did or didn't do? There were many candidates that were interviewed for my position but I seriously doubt the salary range was significantly different, if at all. At the end of day college football is the same. Either you're willing to accept the position within the salary range or not.

I don't want find us in a huge contract that ties us down to a risky hire. It costs too much to fix, and we literally just did that. If we were in a different place, we could afford a risky hire like Deion. The hire we will make is probably going to be on the safer side than splashy. The only way we make a splashy hire if we hire a somebody who is not the flavor of the week.
Agreed, but I would not assume at all that Deion would require a "huge contract that would tie us down".

You're right, I wouldn't assume that either. To me, Deion and his agent can hype it up like an auctioneer. No way of knowing if results will match the hype, but I do believe he is far more likely to than GC.

Who is this mythical "safer" hire?

I would expect it to be far less likely. Deion is already rich. We offer the ability for his son to QB in a big market at the top level.

Campbell has to be enticed from a job with very good pay AND awfully good job security. IMHO he only takes this job if he is cocky and ambitious, both absolutely critical traits, but he is still going to want a large bump and a large buyout.

Wait, why?

If you are interviewing for a job and learn that they are interviewing a higher-priced candidate, don't you think you can get more if you are offered the job?

Doesn't mean that Deion is necessarily a higher-priced candidate, but if the other candidates think he is, then they will benchmark their demands against that. And based on all the Deion slobbering going on it would be natural to assume he would extract maximum value from Tech.

I believe you are overthinking this. The only people who would know would be the interviewing committee and the candidate. In my interviews, I never knew who the other candidates were, ever.

Regarding Key, I don’t think he had any connections to GC prior to coming here. His tenure as OL coach certainly could have been better, but I think there were some extenuating circumstances.

As far as his record as HC, iirc the last interim HC we had didn’t win any of the remaining games his partial year, but turned out ok.

I think Key would do as well as anyone we could hire, but if it’s someone else, I’m ok with that as well.

You mean you've never interviewed for a job where the potential candidate pool is being speculated on by national sport news organizations.

And, as an aside, I've been in many interviews where the grunt interviewing me informed me of the general qualifications of one or more candidates I was competing against: current position, industry, experience, etc. Amazing what you can learn if you just ask in an interview.

Dabo’s peaked at Clemson. It’s been a helluva run, but I can’t see that success continuing. His coordinators are gone, he’s gone with Ukelele way too long and isn’t likely to find another serial predator or golden boy to play QB.

I don’t see him leaving CU for AU, but I could see him leaving for Bama when Saban decides to call it a day.

Maybe he also saw the Saban presser last (this?) week when he answered the kid's question by saying he'll be at Bama still in 10 years.

If he’s peaked, doesn’t know how to hire coordinators, and can’t recruit, why would Bama want him? Hell, why wouldn’t Clemson just go ahead and fire a coach with all those problems?

I have only known about my competition once, and it was because the guy was basically claiming to be me (job, title, customer). It was quite funny. The guy interviewing me said, “Clearly, you are the one that’s actually done this work!”

Agreed. I think rumors of his demise are exaggerated. Aside from the QB issues, he's obviously missed a step but I think he's doing pretty well for someone whose staff was pillaged.

Yeah, I actually had to go to wikipedia and double check because I thought I was going crazy -- we're talking about a guy who is currently 9-1 and cruising towards another conference championship in his first season since losing both his OC and DC, right?

I mean, I know Clemson now expects to compete for natties, but geez...I would've said they are having a fantastic season given the circumstances. Seems really early to bury Dabo.
