Another thread of worthlessness. The season can't get here soon enough.
And I'm having so much fun!
At least it's not another conference speculation thread.

Yeah I have. I have been to at least one preseason scrimmage for every year we have had PJ. And this scrimmage was completely different. I dont know if PJ was passing more to service the Defense or if he really intends to pass more, but there were considerably more passing plays in this scrimmage than any I have ever been to.
Don't need deadly accurate passers to have a passing game.
We do need receivers that can catch the football though.
Scrimmage Saturday was simply to get more practice in with the passing game. Anyone that thinks we're going to pass even 50% of the time just because of what they saw during the scrimmage is too gullible.
Until I see otherwise, I'm going to assume this offense will never produce an OL that can pass block worth a damn.
To be fair, it becomes more difficult to pass block effectively when you don't have any TEs. You end up with DE mismatches against undersized A-backs, or the DE is closer to the QB due to lining up off of the Tackle instead of the TE on both sides of the ball.

I guess the best way around that is to be sure to run a good play action option to freeze the DE?
I am not 100% sure, but I think with the way teams are defending the 3O these days, you can freeze one DE by flaring the A back in motion behind the QB, then out into the flats, either faking the pitch, or just leaving him out there. The WR would pull the CB downfield, and the other A Back would block the OLB on that side.
This would require the QB to roll to that side, and still have to get rid of the ball quickly to avoid being blindsided by the other DE.
So, my conclusion is that it will be very difficult to implement a true passing game out of the 3O alignment. Another thing I forgot to mention is that in our lineup, the lineman splits are not as wide as in a passing formation, I don't believe. I haven't been able to locate any pics to verify if this is true, but if anyone has some, please link.
Srsly?
We line up in the SPREAD formation. We intentionally line up with big gaps to spread out the defense (and leave one of those gaps wide open for the defender that is the dive option key).
Pro style offenses line up much tighter than we do (if that is what you consider a "passing offense").

Right on our splits (not on Dive key which is usually DE). In fact, it seems to me that one of the big differences between GT and Navy (or between GT 1 and GT 2 in the Spring game) was the size of the splits, and Navy Splits are still pretty decent size. GT's base spread has huge splits.
Is the DE not a defender or does the DE come from the edge and not through a gap?
The DE sometimes does either, and the Midline key is almost always through a gap.
This. All part of the long-term plan. We're going to have a great season passing this year. We set it up last year with our A-Backs missing so many blocks. This year they'll do it on purpose and be open for a nice 15 yard pass & catch.
