Best QB that GT ever had?

Allow the statistician in the house to bring in some data points. Obviously the game has changed over the years so data, while an important aspect of ranking QB’s, is not the sole factor.

You have to rank them by era. Prior to about 1985, offenses were mostly run-first and QBs were evaluated by efficiency and field leadership. They did not put up gaudy passing numbers and they didn’t run a whole lot. Field leadership and execution were critical. After 1985 the fun & gun offenses took over and QB’s morphed into consummate playmakers. Athleticism was critical.

Here is another angle to consider: If you could hypothetically have only one of our past QBs on the team now (going into next year) who would you choose?

Joe Ham was certainly the best, any others listed are just personal favorites.

I think Joe Ham and Shawn Jones are definitely the top two, both coached by the Fridge. I would have to give the tiebreaker to the Nat’l Champion over runner up for the Heisman. Lothridge would be right behind them leading Dodd to his greatest victory.

Joe Hamilton, hands down. Nesbitt as second choice, because he was a tough, determined runner.

From 2009 - 2018, we reverted to run-first QBs.

My lifetime as a GT fan and needing to drive the ball down the field for a score to win:

1. Hamilton
2. Thomas
3. Jones

Psychologize it however you will, beating Georgia is the most important thing to me.

Could you imagine saying a QB is the best Tech QB ever if they never beat Georgia?
So Sims isn’t on the list?

I can only list the GT QB's I have seen play as a longtime fan, here are the ones I consider to be the best;

1. Joe Hamilton-one of the best playmakers I have ever seen. He should have won the Heisman Trophy hands-down, based on the criteria for winning this award.
2. Shawn Jones
3. Justin Thomas
4. Josh Nesbitt
5. Billy Lothridge
6. Kim King

1. Lothridge
2. Hamilton
3. Jones
4. King
5. McAshan
6.Dewberry
7. Mitchell
8. Thomas
9. Nesbitt
10. Ball
That's a very good list. The only change I'd make is to slot Pepper Rodgers in for Ball. He was 21-2-1 as a starter (32-2-2 overall). Won a co-MNC. Won the Sugar Bowl twice (once was MVP). Won the SEC. Kicked XPs and FGs.

My Top 10

1. Joe Hamilton
2. Shawn Jones
3. Justin Thomas
4. George Godsey
5. Josh Nesbitt
6. Billy Lothridge
7. Kim King
8. Wade Mitchell
9. John Dewberry
10. Reggie Ball
Pretty good list. Except you left off Ken Whisenhunt. I'd put him ahead of Ball.
