The worst thing about firing CPJ would be having to hire someone... and imagine all the retreads and cast offs people would be advocating for.

In how many other industries do people get fired for spectacularly failing to do their jobs, then get hired for the same jobs again elsewhere?

If the coach has a record of success elsewhere and extenuating circumstances explain the failure, maybe. But otherwise never hire a retread.

Butch failed at UT, but was successful at CMU and Cincy. It wouldn’t be strange to me to see him get another shot. I don’t want him, but he probably should get another shot somewhere.

Well, just off the top of my head I know that Cynthia McKinney and her father Billy McKinney both did it. Johnny Isaakson was a member of Congress and was voted out but got elected as a Senator. Pretty sure Saxby Chambliss did the same thing although I don't remember if he was voted out or if he just didn't run again for his seat in the house and then was re-elected as Senator. If I put more time into it, I would imagine I could find quite a few more.

Point was more aimed at the 'failing spectacularly at their job and getting hired again' part though.

Id prefer not to hire Kiffin and I doubt his off the field reputation would fly with our major boosters. With that said, I do not think we are above hiring him, and I wouldn't complain if we brought him in. It would certainly be an exciting hire.

The top o' yo' head is totally wrong. None of Billy McKinney, Johnny Isakson or Saxby Chambliss ever lost as incumbents and made comebacks. McKinney served in the Ga House for 30 years uninterrupted; Isakson was a US Rep who left that seat to become Senator, without any break in his service; same for Saxby Chambliss.

I will grant you that Cynthia McKinney got re-elected for one term after losing to Majette, but it really helped that Majette voluntarily left the seat after one term, so she was running for an open seat. And McKinney's career is certainly not typical of anything in politics or executive recruiting, so that's all beside the point vis-a-vis coaching hires anyhow.

If we've got the moral courage (is that the right way to put it?) to hire Lane Kiffin, we should be hiring Art Briles instead. Dude is still red hot lava, unfortunately, and there's no way that would fly in the current political climate at Tech. But he's an impressive coach who (from what I have read) got railroaded at Baylor.
