And a hell of a lot better than any Tech team under Collins.Monken‘s team did look really good against 3-8 Navy last Saturday. LOL.

Well….to be fair….playing teams like the Citadel is no guaranteed win under Collins so…we are effed.Years five through seven should have been contingent on tangible progress in the number of wins. There are contract incentives for Collins. There are no performance thresholds protecting Tech.
Why did we not consider any young innovative coaches if we were willing to offer a seven year contract? In retrospect it seems we locked in on Collins from the beginning.
If our AD was concerned about the transition, he should have adjusted our out of conference schedule for at least five years to avoid unnecessary losses. When you go 3 and 9, strength of schedule does not matter. We desperately need wins and playing Georgia, Ole Miss, UCF and Western Carolina ooc is not the way to ensure that.
I’m currently looking for a comprehensive list of every high school head coach in the state. As soon as I find it you will have a boat load of names that fit the bill. And we wouldn’t have been stuck with another Hewitt type contract. He was a gamble. A 1 year HC who had won 7 games as a HC FBS level. But we’re Georgia Tech. We’re not an NFL franchise disguised as a college.
If you’re TS and Georgia Tech, he fits 90% of the build: he’s a heck of a recruiter from the Atlanta area, knows all the high school coaches, and he has coached in the SEC, succeeded and been promoted everywhere he’s been. If he makes even average assistant coaching hires he’s going to go .500 by year 3.
it still makes no sense to me that we were only able to win nine games. We should have won at least twice that many.
But you still can’t name me one person you would’ve hired retrospectively that would’ve done better for sure.
Good coaching trumps recruiting stars all day everyday....
But the lack of coaching was defense. It was the same under Johnson.Good coaching trumps recruiting stars all day everyday....
Collins and his fellow coach’s tremendous failure at Georgia Tech has made me a believer that it requires some coaching skill and organization to win. And it almost certainly takes more skill to win at higher levels of football. I think your chance of finding a high school coach (even one with a dozen championships) with no college football coaching experience at all that would do better than Collins is not good.I’m currently looking for a comprehensive list of every high school head coach in the state. You may be right but I would be willing to risk it. Watched a lot of football this year and saw very few teams as ill prepared and poorly coached as we were. But the lack of coaching was defense. It was the same under Johnson.

Don't know what that is. I should google it.Or a blue waffle

I can't think of a football coach, but Bob Wade (341-25 at Dunbar HS) followed Left Driesell for Maryland basketball. He was fired after 3 seasons after going 36-50, while getting them placed on probation for three years, having their lone NCAA tournament appearance wiped off the books, and receiving a 5-year show cause order.Coaching HS football to a head coach at a P5 school? Has anyone made that jump?

I was jokingDefinitely not at work. On par w/2 girls and 1 cup
Great trivia, thank you. Just imagine a HS coach being hired to coach ND today. Blows the mind.Gerry Faust went from high school coach to Notre Dame in 1981. Stayed 5 seasons, won 5, 6, 7, 7 ,5 with 2 bowl appearances, overall record 30-26-1
Not what I would call a success story but practically Bill Belichik numbers compared to what we have been suffering through.
Gamble yes. Only a huge gamble if you greatly over pay on another dumb contract. Bigger disaster? Very hard to imagine, it would take death penalty recruiting violations.Coaching HS football to a head coach at a P5 school? Has anyone made that jump? Closest I can think of is Briles or Malzahn, but they had stints as coordinators or lower-tier head coaches before making the jump. Hiring a coach straight from high school would be a huge gamble and potentially even an bigger disaster than we have now.
You all seem to be certain there are no ongoing discussions. I’m hearing otherwise. Discussions, not decisions, but G*C*’s fate is hardly as certain as many of you think at the moment.
He’s pissed a lot of people off and Stansbury did not help with his “stand by your man” routine. Not saying it’s certain, but there’s a fairly sizable disgruntled group that was not real happy Gibbs and Choice and Griffin left, Thacker was retained, etc. Long and Tillman hires helped, Griffin leaving the portal helped, etc. I’m not not sure the Defense plan is ok.If we fire him NOW, after letting him hire new assistants, then we’re dumber than I thought, and I’ve set the bar pretty low.
I can’t for the life of me imagine why we let him keep the DC that presided over literally the worst college defense I’ve ever seen, though.

Fans should be upset about a staff that’s produced arguably the worst three year stretch in program history. And the coaching staff will always take the blame for that.If we fire him NOW, after letting him hire new assistants, then we’re dumber than I thought, and I’ve set the bar pretty low.

I think any improvement in the backup QB situation we've had will produce results. That cost us at least two to three wins in my opinion. The new OC should be able to draw plays up that commentators aren't easily identifying and hold players accountable for executing.Fans should be upset about a staff that’s produced arguably the worst three year stretch in program history. So do you think it will change this year and he will redeem himself? I do not!
That would be true for damn near every team outside the top ten, and is also a reason so many people are concerned about Sims.I think any improvement in the backup QB situation we've had will produce results. That cost us at least two to three wins in my opinion.
