Candidates For New Head Coach

Next year will be interesting. We will have to play the Collins recruits on the offensive line and we will have more higher level recruits. The key is preventing transfers and recruit defections this off season.
Very few of the transfers have played at the level we anticipated and this is a key factor in our results.
CGCs '20 & '21 OL classes will be Sophomores and Juniors next season. They were who Key wanted. A lot of top 25 programs have So/Jr starters on the OL. We will see. To be fair, the depth and playing time together won't be ideal. To also be fair, seven frigging years is not necessary to know good and well if your new purchase is what you expected and what it was advertised as. Four is plenty---not for quality depth, but most certainly for: organized, disciplined, and well prepared from the week before the game, play. It's pathetic to see how when observers point out that we are not organized, disciplined, and prepped properly, that some automatically claim said observers are simply CPJ lovers and want him back.

We have a million other threads debating the quality of the transition. Let's keep this one focused on who we would replace the staff with.
Do we have to be realistic about who would want to come here?

Well it doesn’t. But it’s nice that you think that.

He means people who evaluate high school talent though our evaluations were garbage and therefore our recruits as well, camps and high school coaches did not want their players to come to GT. Why? Because these “adults” want NFL connections. The recruiting game and worship of high schoolers is disgusting.

For the record, I guess I meant both but I was thinking more of coaching circles and how our job opening was perceived at the time. Many didn't want to touch it because of perceptions about the roster and transition. Whether that's fair or unfair is debateable.

Nick Saban's clone?

Of course, Nick Saban was blessed with a fanbase willing to come off the hip with $$$ to win ballgames

If the OL is not significantly better next year there is little reason to believe it ever will be under this staff.

You fire a guy after 3 years in this transition and precisely zero coaches will take this job. Carry on with your fantasies, by all means.
I have no idea what this fanbase was expecting after a decade of all-in on the triple option. Has our staff made boneheaded game decisions? Yes of course they have room for improvement in several areas. However, the long play here is improving our talent such that we are not at a severe talent gap to our opponents every FBS game. This gap got so bad in CPJ's final years that even lower FBS teams on our schedule were more talented than us at nearly every position on film. Collins deserves a full five years before we can even *begin* to properly evaluate him due to how badly we recruited under CPJ. The super senior era has made his evaluation even harder because teams that out recruited us for the past six years will still be better than us until the super seniors finally drop out.

I’m starting to wonder if we’ll ever get to a point where everybody agrees that we can start to judge CGC’s on-field results. Now it’s “we can *begin* to judge after 5 full years.” Every year is retroactively Year 0.

I’m not deluded and my standards for this team are pretty low. I don’t expect that we’d have arrived by now (even given my mediocre threshold for success), but öööö, at some point we have to at least start the car and back out of the driveway.

JRjr

I want to Keep Geoff Collins.

I want a new Offensive and Defensive Coordinator though. Even though I feel like Key has been a failure so far I am willing to see him until his recruits are So/Jr at least, so next season is make or break for him

Really Choice is the only position coach that I have confidence in.

This. Both coordinators have to go. Collins loves Tech and he has a great vision but we need better coaching on offense and defense. Recruiting is ALOT better.

You have actual knowledge of this or you just speculating?

You really think that the GTAA can afford to buy Collins out? Or that a group of donors will really pony up the millions needed to make that happen (and the additional ones needed for a new staff)?

Someday. That someday isn't in the next 4 years.

That seems excessive. I agree there's zero chance this year, and probably very little chance next year barring another 3 win season. But he definitely doesn't have four more years' worth of job security with the way the team is playing right now. We will need to show improvement or he will be fired at some point.

Anyway, living in a world where for some reason we do fire CGC this offseason, I'd probably go after Jose Mourinho.

I'm trying to remember. Did it used to be a bannable offense on this board to start a thread like this? Or was that some other board?
