Catchall Deion Sanders Thread

Deion Sanders says Colorado had to 'clean out the old furniture' in wake of transfer portal exodus - CBSSports.com

"We already know what we've got coming in," Sanders told the Pat McAfee Show. "Ya'll just don't know what we've got coming in. We already know what we've got on the way in, baby. They're probably in the airport right now."

The portal deadline is fast approaching and he keeps talking about a list of players coming over that'll blow our minds when he shares it.

Am I missing something here, or does this sound like two dozen instances of improper contact with players who haven't portal'd yet? This may be the age of NIL, but that's still illegal.

Colorado is Colorado. The best they did was steal a 1/2 NC on an extra down thanks to an incompetent officiating staff. That’s not going to ever happen again.

Unless he is contacting players from other schools, who have yet to declare for the portal, I don't see any of his "mind blowing" players in the portal. On paper, there are certainly better players than what left, but nothing that makes them any better than Utah, TCU, or any other school on their schedule. They certainly can't touch USC.

Either he's delusional or the local press covering recruiting can't find the airport. I suppose it could be both.

I would imagine he's gotten some blowback from parents, alumni and some boosters regarding the tactics to date including withholding practice film from players transferring out. He's the reason they're leaving and now he wants to handicap them as they are trying to find a new home.

IF all of these Louis Vuitton bags don't turn up at the airport soon, he's gonna look awfully foolish and the gig is gonna be up. People will be slowly realizing what they've gotten themselves into in Smoulder...er, Boulder.

All the best players from the portal have a home already. He did get his highly rated DB and his son from JSU, who are his highest ranked players. He got several others from JSU. I think he got Jordan Dominic (spelling?) who played here at one point. I just see nothing special.

There will never be a way to police it and it will always be legal when they do it through a 3rd party. College players have tons of contacts and most usually stay in contact with HS coaches, mentors, etc. College coaches, analysts, recruiting coordinators, etc., also have these same contacts. So it's very easy to have back-channel conversations with "representatives" from each party all while still totally being legal and legitimately proclaim, "we have not had any direct contact with player X prior to him entering the portal."

Obviously to a lesser extent than Colorado, but with the portal continuity on most teams will be a thing of the past. A season’s success will depend how quickly coaches can bring the new kids up to speed. Most schools will have this issue, so I expect some bad football games especially early in the season.

No Louis Vuitton bags? Does anyone know the actual roster numbers and how many more spots they need to fill? On3 shows 20 commits and 32 transfers. The last report was that they ran off 69 from last years roster. That's a difference of 17. Do they have 17 spots to fill?

The transfers appear to be good quality overall. Samsonite bags on the whole. There's a few fancy bags, with Travis Hunter being the only 5 star that I see. I don't know enough about the rest of the luggage to assess it. Some of the schools they transferred from are heavy hitters in recruiting like Alabama, Clemson, Michigan, Florida, FSU but I have no idea where they were on the depth chart or if they ever played. I would expect most of them had good reasons for transferring which usually means they were buried on the depth chart.

Most of the transfers are largely unnotable in pedigree or acclaim. Run of the mill. American Tourister bags.

17 spots is a lot if they still have that many. The portal reportedly closes April 30 on Sunday.

Believe April 30 is the last day to enter the portal, but teams can still sign players from the portal after that. So they won't have any trouble getting seventeen guys -- but they won't be able to flip people from other teams anymore.

I think it is already becoming very apparent that Prime is not the talent magnet he or anyone else thought he would be.

I'm just glad this is happening at a school I already don't like. I have a buddy who is a USCw booster and a while back, one of my bucket list items was to see USCw play in the LA Memorial Coliseum. I picked the CO game just so I get double the kicks - seeing the game in that amazing venue and seeing CO get curb stomped (the Trojans stomped CO).

A lot of us remember Prime when he was a big deal. The 17-23 yo population of football players today don't really care about that history. And, I imagine, the NIL budget he needs to do what he needs to do isn't nearly big enough. Making matters worse, the tide of public opinion will turn against him over his callous treatment of the guys he is running off Iincluding the existing offers he has pulled).

I just don't see this ending well. If Prime can get through this year in one peice, it might. Maybe. I think the list of people who are going from "Prime is a good guy and I want him to succeed" to "Prime is a win-at-all-cost, all-about-me, jerk who treats people in his way like dirt" is growing.

I...
huh? he has the #1 transfer portal ranking in a matter for a few months:

what more do you want him to do to show he can recruit?

I hope he fails miserably but if i was a buffs fan id be happy to see him clean house

he added by far the most NIL value to his roster

No, he doesn't have the "#1 transfer portal ranking".

Read the ranking system description: "On3's Team Transfer Portal Index utilizes the On3 (P)erformance score to measure a team’s production during the transfer process, compared relative against its roster and not a comparison against other schools. This proprietary algorithm determines if a school has improved its overall team talent, stayed the same, or declined in talent during the transfer window."

In other words, they have the best transfer portal class in terms of improvement to their existing roster as determined by On3. Which ultimately isn't saying much. It says the kids they got are expected to be better than the kids they ran off and by this measure of "improvement" they gained the most ground. So, talent wise, they probably still suck but they suck less than they did by whatever metrics On3 uses.

But in sheer numbers, I would even doubt that to be true at this point. Unless the rest of what they get in the portal turns out to be REALLY, REALLY good, they very likely aren't to have gained much or certainly not enough to move the needle in the short term. They got a good QB and a 5 star WR neither of which has played a down of FBS football. The rest of the transfers are largely unremarkable.

That has to be quantity over quality. Give me the (+9) 4 stars of USC and some roster stability instead of the +3 4 stars and -28 3 stars of the Fighting Primes. Even though USC is -10 in 3 stars they seem to have replaced them with what (at least some) people rate as better talent.

you forgot the lone 5 star that CO got... plus he added 2.7M of NIL vs. USC only adding 1.2M... if he keeps up that pace he'll be earning more NIL than USC which would be astonishing at a ööööhole like CO

Did you look at the link? CO is #1 on it

It is, but I would expect a team taking 50 players from the portal to have a better ranking than teams taking only 10-20 even if they are doing terribly in attracting talent.

These types of rankings are based on overall quantity, so having over three times as many players gives you a basically insurmountable numbers advantage in terms of ranking regardless of quality.
