9. Missouri | 9. Missouri | 9. Penn State | 9. Missouri |
10. Penn State | 10. Penn State | 10. Missouri | 10. Penn State |
OBSERVATIONS:
- All four of these ranking systems are in agreement that Michigan is #1 and Washington is #2.
- The idea that Georgia was snubbed has no support here - the Bulldogs are #6 in all four rankings.
- These four even agree that Ohio State is #7 and Oregon is #8, and there is only one (the BCS) which puts Penn State at #9 instead of Missouri.
- The dispute centers around #3, #4, and #5.
The Human Polls (AP and Coaches)
The sportswriters ranked them Texas, FSU, and Alabama, while the coaches went with the undefeated FSU first, then Texas who won head-to-head, then Alabama. Both, however, agree that Alabama should be 5th -- because of losing to Texas at home (and, indeed, struggling in some other games), the Tide "deserve" to be ranked behind the other two -- and relatively unbiased humans can see that.
The BCS / Computers
One thing about the BCS throughout its controversial reign -- it has always loved it some SEC. So, it should be no surprise that the BCS ranked Alabama first. Even so, it put FSU ahead of Texas. The BCS ranking system was not particularly impressed with the Texas Longhorns, dropping them to 5th.
The CFP Selection Committee
This is the smallest, least-qualified group of the four -- but also the only one that is "official". It's also the only ranking that had Florida State behind both Alabama and Texas.
Average Ranking
If we average the rank given to Texas, Florida State, and Alabama from all four of these systems, we would get:
- Texas 4.0
- Florida St 4.0
- Alabama 4.3
If we compare the CFP to the other three to see how far the committee deviated, we get:
- Texas ranked 1.3 spots higher
- Florida State 1.3 spots lower
- Alabama 0.3 spots higher
Other / Computer Rankings
If we dive deeper into computer rankings, things get even more interesting...
RPI | F+ | FPI | Massey Comp |
1. Michigan | 1. Michigan | 1. Michigan | 1. Michigan |
2. Georgia | 2. Oregon | 2. Ohio State | 2. Washington |
3. Alabama | 3. Georgia | 3. Penn State | 3. Texas |
4. Florida St | 4. Ohio State | 4. Alabama | 4. Ohio State |
5. Washington | 5. Penn State | 5. Georgia | 5. Alabama |
6. Ohio St | 6. Texas | 6. Oregon | 6. Georgia |
7. Texas | 7. Alabama | 7. Texas | 7. Florida State |
8. Oregon | 8. Florida State | 8. Oklahoma | 8. Oregon |
9. Missouri | 9. LSU | 9. LSU | 9. Penn State |
10. Penn St. | 10. Notre Dame | 10. Notre Dame | 10. Oklahoma |
Pure
RPI ranks Alabama 3rd and Florida State 4th. It also kicks Washington out of the top four, and knocks Texas all the way down to 7th, while moving Georgia up to #2.
F+, which is described as a combination of FEI and SP+, kicks all three of Texas/Alabama/FSU out of the top four in favor of Georgia and Ohio State.
FPI, which is the tool ESPN favors, has Alabama #4 behind a trio of Big Ten teams(!). This method keeps Michigan at #1, drops Texas to 7th, and both Washington (#13) and Florida State (#11) are completely out of the top 10! Yeah, ESPN is way out in left field on this one...
Finally, the
Massey Composite of 94 different ranking systems - some computer, some human - matches the CFP for the top three, but then slots Ohio State at #4 instead of Alabama, which drops to #5. This composite average also drops Florida State to #7.
BOTTOM LINE:
What do we take away from all this? A few things:
The
so-called "advanced" metrics systems like F+, Massey, and FPI in particular,
do not like Florida State for some reason. Remember, none of those take the Travis injury into account -- this is all based on results.
That said, I much prefer the straight-forward simplicity of the
RPI, which has FSU at #4. The
BCS, which served college football fairly well for a decade and a half, also
had the Seminoles in the top four, as did both of the most credible
human polls.
There will always be some controversy no matter which method is used, but I think at the end of the day Florida State should have been included in the top four.
I'm very concerned about
ESPN's reliance on FPI, however, which had neither FSU nor Washington in the top 10. This is so far from every other ranking as to call into question the validity of the FPI -- and the validity of ESPN's commentary on the subject, too.
