CATCHALL GTFLETCH COLLEGE FOOTBALL NEWS THREAD

tl,dr

SEC bunch of greedy brats. i will die on that hill.
Then enjoy being on that hill. Luckily I’m sure JBatt, etc aren’t in that same mindset. But I like how you continue to ignore the fact the ACC started all this when they destroyed the Big East. But that doesn’t matter, right? A move that has shown to be a disaster by going “all-in“ on hoops instead of football.

the ACC did not "start" whats going on now. thats ridiculous.

So it wasn’t the ACC who destroyed the Big East starting conference expansion? Odd. Facts show otherwise. Here is the history of ACC, B1G, B12, sec expansion since 2000.

ACC:

2004-2005: VT, Miami (starting in 2004) BC (starting in 2005)
2011: Syracuse, Pitt (starting in 2013)
2012: UofL (starting in 2014)
2023: SMU, Stanford, Cal (starting in 2024)

B1G:

2010: Nebraska (starting in 2011)
2012: Rutgers, Maryland (starting in 2014)
2022: USC, UCLA (starting in 2024)
2023: Oregon, Washington (starting in 2024)

B12:

2011: TCU, WVU replacing TAMU, Mizzou (starting in 2012)
2021: Cincy, Houston, UCF, BYU (starting in 2023)
2023: Utah, ASU, Arizona, Colorado (starting in 2024)

SEC:

2011: TAMU, Mizzou (starting in 2012)
2021: Texas, OU (starting in 2024)

So yes, in fact the ACC did get the ball rolling, but in the dumbest way. Prioritizing hoops over football. A massive mistake that in the end will be what dissolves the ACC for good.

Why start in 2000 and not 1994? That would say the Big 8 (which became the Big12) started the ball rolling by killing the SWC.

The ACC was stupid though. They should have told Miami to pound sand rather than allowing them to bring BC.

They didn’t prioritize basketball. VPI and Miami were football powerhouses at the time. That move was made to get a championship game…for football. Which was something the other football conferences were starting to do. The ACC then decided they also wanted to be THE basketball conference with the Syracuse and Pitt moves. In addition Syracuse and Pitt wanted a conference that respected football. I think the ACC assumed (wrongly) that people would be satisfied with their regional conferences and championship football games.

Landscape of CFB and TV didn’t really start to ramp up until late 90’s on. SWC / Big 8 to B12 was more of a merger vs what happened to the Big East starting in 1994.

The schools the ACC added was more of the issue. Syracuse, BC, Pitt were shells of their former selves with little fan support. VT, Miami were 2 logical picks, but not taking WVU (academics or not) was a mistake at the time. Geographically they were the natural fit. Plus, taking UofL later proved the academic aspect was more myth than reality.

ACC had a chance to secure themselves as a stable 3rd league when OU, Texas bolted to the sec, USC, UCLA to the B1G. When that happened, the ACC should have invited UCF, Cincy, WVU, UH. By being proactive, the ACC could have then added some more from the B12 + SMU, instead of Cal, Stanford. Remnants of P12 / B12 could have then merged and created a much better geographic conference.

The ACC did prioritize hoops. Who are you kidding? That’s all the ACC league seemed to care about for a very, very long time. VT, Miami were football brands at the time. VT was a great move for a very long time until Beamer started to slide and retired. Miami has been for the vast majority of the time a complete disappointment.

But adding Pitt, Syracuse, BC were simply put hoops adds. UofL had a combo of both. Pitt has surprisingly been a tough football program as a whole under Pat N, but has very little fan support. UofL has gone from a very good hoops program under Pitino to focused more on football now. They’ve been up and down, but overall a quality football program. More 8+ win seasons vs losing seasons since joining. Syracuse, BC are hoops schools. BC seems to try in football, but 6, 7 wins are as good as they’ll be. Syracuse is rebuilding again under Fran Brown. He’s recruited well since becoming HC, so we’ll see if he can even get to the level of Rutgers.

The ACC did not prioritize hoops. That is an absolute lie. GT, Clemson, and FSU, in particular, wanted football expansion. The ACC powers (Duke, UNC, UVA, NC State) didn't want expansion because it destroyed their precious basketball round robin. The rumors at the time was that GT, Clemson, FSU were threatening to leave. Miami was an obvious first choice. We settled on VT because the state of Virginia was going to force UVA to vote no to ANY expansion that didn't include VT.
Otherwise, the little girl should have AGGRESSIVELY approached football expansion. Hell, we should have been approaching Tennessee, Auburn, and Florida, along with Miami, at that time and went for the jugular. As it was, we allowed Swofford and the Tobacco Road Mafia to assure themselves that Duke and UNC would be safe in basketball and lazily approach expansion with second rate schools.

That above is the facts. I don't know where the hell you were at the time, but none of us were particularly happy on this board, outside of getting Miami who, at the time, was playing for national championships.

I was gonna lock the thread just for the pure irony but reconsidered after remembering what Beestorm told us during mod orientation: Even GTFLETCH deserves to be heard.
Mod orientation? Who conducted that the remaining members of The Who?

This take Is very wrong. The SEC got the ball rolling in 1992 with the "Conference Championship Game" and getting a rule set that only conferences with 12 teams (which they ironically had, they only had 10 teams in 1991 [imagine that!]) could have a conference championship game. That started the expansion game when other conferences saw how much $$ the SEC was making off the SEC Championship game; so they all had to get to 12. ACC expansion in 2004-2005 was to get to a conference championship game.

That’s mighty nice of you, since he plagiarized you previously and refused to apologize for it.

if you go back to 04-05, we weren't close to a football playoff, and March Madness was going strong as a $1B cash cow. And it still is
