Any trepidation is due to his lack of P5 experience. I'm sure he's a step up from Collins (so are you, for that matter) but can he go from small'ish Coastal to ACC P5 football and the requirements to win at a place like GT? How does he recruit? Coastal has fewer recruiting hurdles than we do.

We just went thru a guy with no real P5 experience before so not sure if we want to go down that road of possibilities again. I'm sure he's a step up but is he the guy to take us to having the same chance against Clemson that Wake, NC State, and PITT already have? If those 3 programs can be where they are today, I see no reason why we can't. No gimmicks at any of 'em. Just good coaching and execution.

That's a fair take.

I think the other guys we are looking at/have a realistic chance at will have the exact same question marks however. Unless you're hearing different as to who we are going for/have a chance at.

He is the logical, safe choice. I will gladly pay to see him coach. But I would crawl across broken glass to see Deion coach GT.

I don't understand this "trepidation", right? We don't have any chance of getting a coach with P5 experience unless we take someone who is about to be fired or was fired previously. We go down this road because the other option is to take someone with no Head Coaching experience. If P5 experience is the end all be all, Key would be a shoe in.

Not disagreeing with you or doubting your source, but I just find it hard to believe that the President and interim AD would make the statements that we are going to hire the AD first and let him/her make the HC hire. I know the money has to come from donors/big boosters so they have a large say but I still find it all funny that we don't even have a concrete list of AD choices yet and folks say we have leaders for the HC position. Also, the HC won't be hired before the end of season, so a lot of things can change.

It's all behind the scenes candidates lining up so when AD is hired we aren't starting from ground zero.

There's also mutual interest currently from Deion and the institute (donors are also on board).

Both guys are getting serious looks.

I'd counter the football being played at that level is not different than the lower tiers of the Power 5. Northwestern, Duke, Tech would have as much success in the Sun Belt as they've had in the ACC.
 
some of you keep saying you want Power 5 experience then immediately post how you want Deon. I'd submit Deon, at an HBCU and a short time at that, has a resume that is arguably weaker than Collins when we hired him. Seems we would learn our lesson about promises, flash, recruiting ability from this last fiasco. Can we please focus on guys who have coached and won? We are just about done with do-overs and mulligans in the hiring of coaches.

Possible, and frankly I hope this is the case because that means it wasn't just a knee-jerk reaction to all the latest bitching about Collins, and has actually been thought about.

Anything is "arguable" no matter how idiotic if you are JJacket. That is "arguable" at a level that even JJ would not touch.
