College Game Is Dying/How do we save it [RIP NCAA Catchall Thread]

And were you upset when GOL took the $$$ and ran to ND breaking the contract he agreed on with GT? My guess is a resounding, yes. So don’t act like SA’s are the only ones who break their deal and go elsewhere. Coaches do it all the time with no real consequences.

Also, while I think paying for school with the new collectives, etc is valid in theory, it will never happen. There will always be other schools who will provide SA’s with both scholarships and collectives.

You want to fix it? Get rid of the so called fake 4 year scholarships SA’s sign out of HS (which are renewed annually btw) and have binding contracts for 1,2,3 or even 4 years between the SA and school. If the SA signs the contract and tries to leave early, the SA owes the school whatever the remaining value of the contract is. If this type of deal was in place, do you think the OL who left for Bama in January for Iowa would be on his way back to Bama already? Simple answer, no. No way he would want to pay the NIL collective back. Same for Ewers when he left tOSU for Texas, and Moore leaving UCLA for Oregon after 1 year.
GOLwasanemployee.Playersaren't...ohwait.Whatyoubelieveexistedinthepastiswaayoverrated.

Again, this is a false narrative. The scholarships are NOT binding for 4 years. They are renewed annually, and despite what you want to believe, SA’s are processed and left with no scholarship. The 2,000 players remaining in the Portal is evidence of that.

Roughly 60-65% of the players currently in the Portal with no home are not in the Portal because they are looking for greener pastures.

The roughly 1-2% that get the HL’s when leaving already have a “home” before officially placing their name in the Portal.

Also, if you really think a “brand” means more than a star athlete at 98% of the schools, I don’t know what to tell you. GT had the “brand” for hoops under Bobby C and Hewitt, like Bama did under numerous coaches and most recently Saban. When programs struggle or are just the average P4 school, that “brand” is not bringing in the $$$. Texas, tOSU, Michigan, Oregon, USC, PSU, Alabama, etc are the exceptions to the rule.
What exactly do you think the conversation was for the 60-65% of players in the portal with no home? Do you really believe the coaches hinted at not renewing a scholarship?

More likely it was like this, “You’re not likely to see the field here. Maybe you should look elsewhere if that’s important to you.”

Exactly. Which contradicts people with the stance below. They aren’t getting a free ride for a degree, medical, food and housing. They are getting processed to go elsewhere losing what was promised.

The players don't get nothing, they get a degree, housing, food, top notch medical care, development, networking, etc. The money is made off the names of the schools, not the star players. People pay to watch Alabama play more than they pay to watch Milroe play. I believe you could move all the current 4-5 stars into a NFL minor league, and populate CFB with 3-stars and below and viewership would stay the same.

They should set up the NUL for players that get nothing

Jk, but they should offer free tuition for 4 years to anybolayer that loses 'ship so they can get a degree

And free RedBull. Great study aid!

This is an obscure video I found on realignment with a different take and claims of insider information. Ill try to summarize some of the points.

* SEC really wants UNC and UVA to get in those states TV markets. UNC and UVA will have to take smaller share to get in.
* FSU is only an option for the BIG10 who wants them. They just have to get out of their ACC GOR. Could be a settlement between ACC and FSU soon.
* The BIG also wants TA&M a lot and Clemson less so. Miami and GT were also mentioned for BIG10 but our viewership makes both a non-starter. Believes Miami should settle for B12.
* The BIG and SEC are working together!!!

Only chance for GT seems to be to offer to take a small share from the BIG. GT/ACC should consider lawsuit against both SEC/BIG for antitrust IMO. Otherwise we have no choice but stay in post-ACC regroup or further expanded B12...

If they choose to ride the bench they get all the benefits and none of the responsibility. Granted they give up on a dream potentially of playing in the NFL.

Telling the very people the lifeblood of your sport depends to go pound sand is a fascinating economic decision.
What? The vast majority of fans will be watching and rooting for their teams just like they have been. Just because a few old dudes on a message board are gonna go on a purity strike against their team doesn’t mean they’ll be a blip on the radar. And something tells me you will watch FSU vs GT even though both teams will have transfer and NIL players all over the field.

What does this have to do with losing your scholarship and getting sent to the abyss known as the Portal? A vast majority of CFB, CBB SA’s are in it for the education. Problem is, coaches and now schools are at a crossroads of either win now, or lose later when the next round of conference expansion comes and the ACC goes the way of the Big East (football) and P12 altogether.

No one is sent to the portal. They go on their own volition. We are talking past each other.

You have no clue what you’re talking about if you believe that. The stats are out there (free I might add) to show otherwise. 2,000 players aren’t giving up their scholarship in the hope of another school magically coming around.

Yea they are. Every single one wants to go to the NFL. If they don’t play they don’t go. The coaches would not risk rescinding a scholarship for performance on the field. It would kill recruiting. In fact I believe the P5 schools agreed they wouldn’t do that.

What does this have to do with players getting processed to the Portal by a school in order to go for another transfer or HS signee? They are losing their scholarship to another player the staff feels will make an impact.

In fact, HS recruiting is going to become less by the year until it’s 50/50 HS to Portal.

Look at programs like Ole Miss as the future for example. Kiffin is still heavy recruiting HS, but going more for 40-50% impact transfers now that have proven it at the CFB level vs a so called 4* HS player.

It has everything to do with your original point that players are being forced to give up their scholarship and I said they decide to leave and forgo a scholarship and riding the bench for the opportunity to play somewhere.

Again. You’re clueless. But go ahead and keep your head in the sand. I bet you still think CFB was an amateur sport until last week too.

How much is one year of all that worth? It's not nothing. $15k in tuition, $5k in housing, $2k in food, $5k in medical and trainer support, $X in skill development, $1k in tutoring, $X in networking.

If school brand didn't mean anything, Michigan fandom would have fallen off in the last 10 years (before the last couple years rising up), Miami would have no fans, Vandy would be an empty stadium every week. People watch the games of the schools they care about because of family tradition or school pride or local affiliation. On paper, the spring football league should have better players and a better product than CFB (players are just below the line for the NFL), but no one watches it. It's the schools that drive viewership.

That's not processing them out though, that's telling them they've been passed on the depth chart and it's up to them to go into the portal or not. How many guys do we have on scholarship right now that have played in 1 game or fewer?

As usual in the world of college athletics "the rich will get richer". With the negative changes impacting college sports I grow even more apathetic. With the rising cost of a college degree, I always felt the compensation of a free ride via a college scholarship was plenty compensation. Oh well all you can do as a fan is either continue to support or don't.
Selfish & stew pid

#1. First things first, the value of a degree + room / board + food, etc does not even come close to the millions schools have been getting for the past 15 years. Are you completely ignoring how much $$$ the following have made via SA’s performance?

1. NCAA president.
2. Conference commissioners.
3. School presidents.
4. School AD’s.
5. Head coaches + staffs.

Then add in with all the $$$ schools have been getting what they’ve done with it. The insane LR renovation’s, etc, because the schools had to spend it somewhere have made Oregon, Clemson, Alabama, etc facilities better than any NFL team. So why weren’t the schools forward thinking enough along with the corrupt billion dollar corporation known as the NCAA to have fixed this before it really got started in 2020? Had a revenue sharing piece been implemented in let’s say 2015, this whole mess could have been prevented.

The Supreme Court in a 9-0 decision correctly said what the NCAA had been doing was completely unethical.

#2. As far as the Portal, for the 100th time. Players are PROCESSED by coaches and forced into the Portal losing their scholarship in the hopes of getting lucky enough to find another home. The biggest example of that is COLORADO. Other schools are doing the EXACT same thing on a much smaller scale.

How you can continually deny reality is quite comical.
