CPJ and The Ceiling

2014 is the ceiling.

Lost 2 winnable games to Duke (31-25) and UNC (48-43). We can be a touchdown better on offense or defense (or one less turnover) than 2014.

1 loss and an ACC-CG win puts us in the playoffs. I'll take a great CPJ offense in the playoffs over the best traditional offense Tech can put together based on the reality of constraints we face. We aren't going do well in an apples-to-apples matchup vs. Alabama/Oklahoma/Ohio State

CPJ's ceiling is a national championship.

Tech without CPJ's ceiling a CFP appearance.

Both are a real stretch and require timing/luck based on the diverging trajectories of Tech football and College Football in general.

CPJ's ceiling is a national championship.
Maybe if he gets hired onto a school with a bunch of talent already on the roster and he wins it in his first year or two.

Once his recruits start showing up on campus, that ceiling goes way down.

- I think it would be a PR nightmare in our home state. Not unlike dropping out of the SEC as regards athletics. We Might have a chance to become a Stanford, but I think we would more easily become a Tulane or Rice type school athletically.

In what specific way would going private hurt us athletically?

In what way would PR get worse? The media is already dwag controlled. If we went private, we could add a journalism school.

- lastly, if we went “private” how do we know the same HillNerds hurting the GTAA now (and not the BoR) would not find a way to use that to the further detriment of our athletic teams?

Presuming the Hillnerds are a detriment, we currently have two layers of detriment - them and the dwag BOR. Eliminating one of the two layers would not make us worse, and would unbind the other layer of detriment from being necessarily detrimental. They might still do so, but if so it would be by choice, not by legislative requirement. Plus, any path to private must by necessity include biiiig money donations, and those donations will have quite a bit of say in how the Hillnerds approach the project.

I must have missed where he went to the national championship in 2014.
once his recruits get on campus his ceiling goes all the way down to winning the orange bowl and being ranked #7. so you're absolutely right. massive drop off.

everybody gets lucky sometimes and unlucky other times.

The ceiling for a team that has at one point gone 11-3 is a national championship. There's no reason why our ceiling should be different than Alabama's. However, while it's reasonable, it's also unlikely. That's why Bama fans expect one and we hope for one. I don't think you're really asking for our "ceiling" as much as what should be our "expectation." Two different things.

I like CPJ. He’s old school and I think that is a good thing. The caveat is he doesn’t seem to be evolving. If he is willing to implement a viable passing game and at least average defenses, then he’ll be poised to strike big when it lines up for him (ala 2014). From what I can tell, he has doggedly pursued recruiting and facilities improvements. The AA is just now responding.

We can win at GT, just need to remain committed.

Against an FSU that got ööööing destroyed by Oregon.

What would they have done to us. We were nowhere near championship quality.
For whatever it's worth, FSU's psychotic garbage QB played his best game of the season vs Tech and his worst game of the season, which included many bad games, vs Oregon. We probably could have beaten Oregon in 2014.

And losing to Duke
And almost losing to ööööing Southern

He got lucky as öööö that year

You can't throw out good data points on "luck" without throwing out bad data points.

Smelter?
Damn near killed her
Yes, Smelter. The dwags injured him so he didn't play in the ACCCG or against MSU. If you go back and look at our last offensive possession against F$U, you will see Waller running the wrong route on a third down that killed the drive. Smelter would have converted that play and maybe even scored. Even if he didn't score, he probably would have gotten us close enough for Butker to kick another miracle for the win.

Oh dang... just saw the whiteout post.
