Expansion Rumors…

This should be a more long term and deliberate decision that could take weeks, if not months, to rectify, says one administrator. The key question: Does the arrangement generate enough additional revenue to be worthwhile? One administrator who has knowledge of the discussions said ACC athletic directors first heard of the idea during a conference call Friday. “It’s something that has been considered worth exploring, but nothing has had any detail put behind it,” the administrator said. “The general response has been, ‘Give us more [specificity].’”

ESPN would gain a foothold on the West Coast, assuring it holds substantial rights for three of the five Power 5 leagues in the wake of Fox’s stranglehold on the Big Ten (the network is believed to have at least a 60% share of the Big Ten’s new TV deal). ESPN is expected to be prominently involved in the Pac-12’s negotiations for a new media rights deal.

For Pac-12 Commish Kliavkoff, the potential partnership with the ACC would project strength at a time when the Pac-12 is weak and guarantees something the Big 12 cannot—a regional network television partner. The Pac-12 would be grabbing a lifeline from the ACC at a time when the Big 12 is attacking its membership. With sources indicating Oregon and Washington do not have a clear and imminent path to the Big Ten, those schools might prefer staying in the Pac-12—which could, in turn, improve the chances of Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah staying in the league.

Some of all this sort of reminds me of the Titanic..... In the view of many, college football as we've long known it, where schools generally recruited in close proximity to their home bases, regionalism was key, and the talent was widely dispersed, is going down. The changes began maybe 15 years ago as the top players began going to a small cluster of schools. The era of Nick Saban at Alabama is no doubt an anomaly over the last 100 years of this stuff. Changes are again coming though as there's no doubt a relatively weak state economically like Alabama will have a harder time replicating their recent past success over the next generation as money drives the desirability of other schools.
Where do we fit in this? Well, we're sort of like a passenger in steerage wanting to now get on a life boat. We're claiming that because we had distant relatives that could once philander on the top deck, we should still get one of the few rides off the sinking ship.
Who knows, maybe we'll find a raft, but as the music plays, the outlook isn't so good.

The ACC would be stupid to even try and negotiate a new TV deal with the P12 as a partnership. This would be an easy out for Clemson, FSU, Miami, etc. They could easily challenge and win a lawsuit against the current GOR since it would essentially be nullified.

I tend to agree but maybe not for the same reason. Football eyeballs tend to focus on rooting for one team or another.

I hate Michigan so I root for whoever is playing Michigan.

A game between Stanford and Duke while interesting does not pull in eyeballs.

This is what is not being completely factored in w/r to expansion. What are the potential matchups? What are the expected ratings of Michigan vs @GT compared to the ratings of Michigan @Duke?

You can call me whatever you want but Michigan @ GT if both teams have a winning record going into the game would dominate national eyeball ratings. If I were an ESPN exec, I would label such a game as "a sleeping giant in the South takes on a monster from the North." - do you see where I'm going with this? Its about viewers and GT has a brand that resonates. We need to be in a conference that also resonates.

I would agree. I travel all over the US and when I mention I went to Georgia Tech, the common response has been "you guys have really been crappy in football lately". First, I'd have to agree with them, but on the bigger picture, It lets me know that they are aware of what Georgia Tech is doing nationally. They must have had some idea that we were pretty good in football in order to convey our current status to me.

I think our casual following is much bigger than the people on this board give us credit for. We definitely need to start winning again soon, but I don't think we lost all credibility yet. Higher profile games, and us being competitive in such games, is very important IMO.

Funny you say that. I live in the greater DC metro area and have a lot of B1G friends/colleagues. A person (Iowa grad) that I have worked with for over 20 years who has never over that 20 years brought up football - not even when Iowa whooped us in the OB whenever that was, asked me what the hell happened when we lost to ND 55-0? Two decades - no questions. Lose to ND 55-0 and I'm getting text messages.

If ND beat Duke 55-0, no one would send any text messages to anyone.

Point being, while nationally, people understand that GT is a tough program, we are expected to at least represent. 55-0 is not representing. If you (GT) want a spot on a B1G team's calendar, you are expected to represent. We cannot do this again.

Dude, you are off the rails. You cite MSA population specifics as many others here have without the slightest acknowledgement of how many of those eyeballs give a flying flip about college football. Fine, lets tell the B1G to add a college football team in Tokyo because there are 37 million people in Tokyo.

Oh, Miami has 6.2 million people so its better than Atlanta because Atlanta only has 6,1 million. But GT isn't in Miami's league? Lemme ask you this - of the 6.x M people in ATL and Miami respectively, what do you think is the percentage of each that watches college football on Saturday.

ATL is full of football fans. Miami is full of transplants from Cuba and New York.

Sometimes, the right thing to do is raise your hand and let the coach know you need to sit on the bench for a bit.
There are more than 6.2 million up the coast in south Florida.

Respectfully, if their cable bill jumps .90 it counts. I’ve not read the contract but that is the rumor.
Point taken. Sometimes it’s just about the suscriber base. This is why I recused myself from the proceedings.

Imagine Notre Dame and GT joining the Big X. Then imagine GT getting boat raced by Notre Dame, Ohio St, and UGA every season. I'm not sure if the Big X wants that. They can pay lower tiered schools a million a game to be boat raced instead of giving GT an 80 to 100 million piece of the pie. GT needs to up their game and at least be slightly competitive.

Well I do have an expectation that we will raise our game accordingly. If you don’t think similarly then I’m not sure what’s left to discuss.

True; but a lot of them won't. Lots of retired fixed income types have a basic cable package that doesn't even include ESPN. My MIL in Orlando is one of them.

Or, imagine GT doesn't get boat raced by those schools every year after joining the BIG10, dumbass.

Yes. Let’s öööö on our own team since there aren’t enough other people doing it for us.

Here's an interesting question: If we had stuck with the 3O, would our chances of being picked up by a P2 be higher or lower than it is now?

I think it would be lower even with a couple more wins per season and 5K or so more fans in the stands. No one would want to play against it.

I don't live in Florida, but I am retired and living on a fixed income, and I have every sports station that my cable provider offers. If you want it, you will get it.

With a new AD, a new coach and an additional 50 million dollars per year, we should be able to improve significantly.
