Expansion Rumors…

Disagree on your ordering of GT, UVa, and UNC.

I ranked UVA second* because it's going to be a quick conversation, since VA Tech is never getting a B1G invite.

*Why should UNC be higher? This has nothing to do with basketball - the $$ for basketball is a fraction of that for football.

If you take one VA school you have to take the other - we know that from realignment v1. A lot has been said about UNC-NCSU being the same but I'm not sure we know that.
I dont think any previous precedent applies in this new world order. I dont know how that VT politician pulled it off before but since both VT and UVA have potential landing spots this time (UVA->B1G, VT to B12 or SEC) combined with the ACC is doomed, I wouldnt think there would be any roadblocks this time around.

I still have UNC as 3. Expansion is about money. If enough houses in NC are willing to get the B1G network for basketball, that is all that matters. And there may be that level of interest in NC.

I thought the Big10 Network was already attached to most providers, meaning they don't really have to sell it. They just get a bigger payout when they have a school in state. GA and NC are 8 and 9 in population rankings. VA us 12th with about 2 million less people. Any of the 3 would be a big bump.

That is if I remember correctly from when I actually gave a öööö enough to research last time.

And also, FL has twice the population of GA. I feel like this round is more about TV money and controlling college football than academic fit, so FSU should be highly sought after as well.

I don't know if it's the actual "state" or just the particular TV market where the school actually is. If it's "local market" then UVA adds little to nothing as they are in the DC area where Maryland already has that covered. UNC is a large state but the Raleigh-Durham market isn't all that big by itself.

Could be, I haven’t researched it. I’m just going off articles I read during each expansion phase.

For the B1G, I think GT, UVa, and UNC are the best fits. Miami is also a fit, but less so.

FSU, Clemson, and VT have a lot of potential. VT would be a great fit for the SEC. The Bristol game showed that. Clemson and FSU, while great football schools, don’t really add anything to the SEC. Both schools would weaken existing SEC members if they have sustained success. Existing SEC members would benefit from having both fall on hard times. For the SEC, getting one of UVa/VT and UNC/NCSt would add value. Adding Miami probably would too as south FL recruiting is different from the rest of the state. Those kids love to stay local. *UVa would be a horrible cultural fit for the SEC.

Pitt is getting screwed. They are a good football school in a football state. They have interest in a football loving city. They have solid academics. But adding them does nothing for the B1G and does nothing for the SEC.

Outside of NC and VA, the SEC is reaching its natural boundaries. They either add schools in their existing footprint, or stretch too far (Utah, CO, Kansas).

The SEC could add WV with the hopes of increasing interest in the Pittsburgh area but I think overall it would just dilute their payout.

If that is the case, Stanford brings San Fran, top 5 market, Boston College, is in the 9th, Tech is 10th, Arizona schools bring Phoenix, the 12th biggest, and Miami is the 16th. Raleigh is still 24th.

Edit: Damn thought I was in the lake mead thread lol
Have y’all ever seen this beautiful golf course in Nevada? Must use a lot of water.

Yeah, Duke may be the odd man out since this is a purely football driven realignment.
Duke may be better served to form a basketball conference with Georgetown, Villanova, UConn, etc. and just drop football. Their boosters and alums aren’t really interested in it anyway

I'm pretty sure the Duke administration will be fine with being left out since I've read either here or elsewhere that Duke administration only kept football going as an obligation to all the alumni who have donated to their athletic association. A "well we can't take their money and then drop football" situation. So for UNC the real question is whether they're tied to NCSt. With Wake being small I'd be surprised if they have enough political pull to keep themselves tied at the hip to UNC. NCSt though I think so long as they get a call from someone, they'd probably be fine. Can't imagine the SEC passing them up though, and I can't see the B1G adding too many programs at once, so seems like NCSt and VPI will be on the table available.

I don't know which course that is, but I did play Cascada in Boulder City, NV and looked very similar to this. It was by far the best track I've ever played and I have played some pretty famous courses.

Duke, UNC, GT, Pitt and UVA are more natural B1G schools (AAU schools) while FSU, Clemson, NCSU and Miami fit the SEC.

Duke aint coming unless UNC makes it a condition of joining, but I think Duke would be okay with having an excuse to bow out of football if they could, maybe bring their basketball program with and abandon football?

As for Miami, it's a small private school in a huge market. No way B1G passes over them and passes over the state of Florida.

Miami may get lumped in because of the MIA and FLL airports providing enough direct coverage.

I fly A LOT. It's not easy to get to Chapel Hill, Tallahassee, Spartanburg/Greenville, and Charlottesville from other parts of the country.

Does Greg Garrett post on the other site anymore? Is he tipping off where the Hill's head is at currently?

NC media seem to believe conversations between UNC, UVA, Clemson, and FSU are serious. Today there was an interesting take that UNC might like separation from Duke. In their arrogance they believe Duke has needed UNC rivalry to succeed in basketball. N&O suggested that if these four go to the SEC, that Duke, Miami, NC State and Georgia Tech are best bets for Big 10 expansion. Interesting that Virginia Tech is considered just behind those schools.

Came across an tOSU podcast talking about the subject of expansion and teams they'd want in or out. Here's the parts regarding their thoughts on GT. Just a couple of dudes talking football, so has no impact obviously, but if you want to hear what they think about us I've got you covered.

Regarding GT as an AAU school and program:

Regarding GT being in or out of the conference:

And if you want to hear their thoughts on the entire ACC:
