Expansion Rumors…

At some point, should Vanderbilt worry?

I do wonder if any of these conferences would consider kicking out the sisters of the poor and upgrading if it came down to a situation like adding FSU would take them to 25 teams unless they dropped Vandy or Mizzou…

Expansion would have to go beyond 20 for GT to have a prayer.

Scenario 1: ND joins. Oregon and Wash join to make it 19. No way they have one satellite team down south.
Scenario 2: ND does its typical we are god’s gift and doesn’t join. Oregon and Wash make a lot of sense to complement the west coast presence and that makes 18. Hard to see the B1G going to the south for two-teams, especially considering the GOR isn’t going to be resolved very quickly. Much more sense to grab another two PAC teams and call it a day.

By now, everyone has heard the news that USC and UCLA will be leaving the Pac-12 for the Big Ten to begin competition in 2024-25. That of course is on the heels of last summer’s news that Texas and Oklahoma were leaving the Big 12 for the SEC. The writing is on the wall that college sports, specifically football, is undergoing a seismic shift. The days of five power conferences are numbered, and it’s trending toward there being just two super-conferences.

This inevitable shift toward two major conferences will have a significant impact on Florida State athletics since it’s currently stuck in the ACC. With that in mind, I’ll share what I’m hearing from various sources on what’s happening with conference expansion, major changes in the college sports landscape and what that could mean for Florida State.

NUGGETS: (July 4, 2022)

I’ve heard from various sources that the SEC and Big Ten are keeping close tabs on each other. The USC-UCLA move was clearly in response to the SEC grabbing Texas and Oklahoma last year. It’s obvious that neither conference is done, and all signs point to expansion accelerating. In fact, we might hear more within the next couple weeks. There is already chatter about Oregon and Washington joining USC and UCLA in the Big Ten. The immediate goal seems to be to get to 18 schools (The Big Ten will be at 16 with USC and UCLA). Same with the SEC, which will be up to 16 with the addition of Texas & OU. But the number in each conference will probably grow beyond just 18. One number I was told is somewhere around 50 total schools between the two conferences when the dust settles. ESPN and Fox will have to be very involved in this and will want to make sure there is enough inventory of games

The most interesting and shocking nugget that came my way from a well-placed TV insider is that the Big Ten is talking to Georgia Tech. I wanted to discount this because Tech obviously isn’t much of a TV draw and has been on the decline for the past few decades. Apparently, the Big Ten did a deep dive into the numbers, think GT can be relevant again and want to get in the Atlanta/Southeast market. I also don’t think it’s a coincidence that Atlanta is in the heart of SEC country. And Georgia Tech is another AAU school, which would keep the academics in the Big Ten happy.

Let’s assume there is something to this nugget. If there is, what does that mean for Florida State?

- It’s disheartening that Georgia Tech might get a pass out of the ACC before FSU does, but this could be incredibly positive.

- I didn’t get any details on the question everyone wants to know – ‘How does any ACC school leave the conference and avoid financial ruin with the Grant of Rights running through 2036?’ I didn’t get a straight answer on how that could happen but was told that it would get worked out.

- I’ve been steadfast in my belief that the GOR has a stranglehold on ACC schools looking to get out, but hearing that there could be a path for Georgia Tech to jump to the Big Ten is encouraging. We aren’t privy to all of the details of the deal ESPN/Disney has with the ACC. So, it’s possible there’s something in that agreement that could mitigate the GOR. What also isn't clear is how ESPN and the SEC would answer if the Big Ten expanded again. Would FSU and Clemson be next on their list? Miami? Or would the Big Ten try to push further into the Southeast?

Whatever happens, we have to assume ESPN will come up with a plan to appease ACC schools like Wake, BC and Syracuse that would probably be left out of these Super Conferences. Regardless, I can’t imagine the B1G would be speaking to GT if there was not a potential plan to get around -- or at least mitigate -- the GOR’s hold.

Now that the dust has settled on the Big Ten's latest big move and the holiday weekend, we expect to hear more in the coming days about Florida State's and the ACC's future. So stay tuned.

I generally don't pray for things as relatively unimportant as sports and other things which comprise the toy department of life. But, since Georgia Tech sports have been a joy to me since the late 1950s, and I am concerned that their very existence is at stake, I am tempted to pray that this report is true and that Tech gets into the Big 10 as soon as possible. If our current leadership can bring us into the Big 10, everybody in the athletic department could have a lifetime contract, as far as I'm concerned. If this happens, I also hope everything works out for all the other ACC teams. In my mind, we are indebted to the ACC for taking us in when it did. But, Tech needs something really good to happen to its sports program, and getting into the Big Ten would be a dream come true for me.

My own personal opinion is that we will eventually end up with 2 28-team conferences which will be based from what is now the SEC and the B1G. Which of those we end up in is anyone's guess but if I had to guess, I'd say the B1G.

This is only going to happen for ACC teams if/when at least 4 (and probably 6) of the teams all decide to leave at the same moment and cause the league to implode so that there is no ACC to enforce that stupid GOR that Bud signed over like a dumbass.

Here’s an out of the box idea since there is discussion about schools (Miami) looking for ways to buyout the GOR. The buyout is chump change for the Georgia Tech Foundation. What if it finances the buyout as a means of getting access to the BTAA - the research/academic arm of the Big Ten comprised of all AAU schools (and Nebraska lol).

I am waiting for SEC and Big Ten to merge. And the NCAA will be distant memory we use to scare our grandchildren.

If I were the BIG 10, I would pull ND, Pitt, Clemson and GT, from the ACC. Pitt and ND, are logical pulls, just from location. Clemson is the only powerhouse football team and GT, would bring the Atlanta market. I know there are rumors of FSU and Miami. However; I think these are less likely.

I'd pull Miami before Clemson, honestly.

You only pull Pitt if you are afraid the SEC will add them. And even then you probably don’t.

The B1G draw their money from local cable operators. It they can get enough houses to sign up for their network, they force the cable company to add the B1G network to their basic package. They have enough Penn State and OSU fans to do that already in the Pittsburgh market. I don’t know if adding GT gets them over the hump in the Atlanta market or not (there are a lot of B1G alum in Atlanta already). GT+FSU/Clem probably does it. FSU+Clemson might do it without us. For the B1G it is very much about selling their network.

You're reaching if you are comparing us to Vandy.
Vandy has had the benefit of oft mentioned BIG sec money for decades. What has it bought em, or UK,Ark,MSt,Mizz, and for quite some time UT?

A lot of damn money. That doesn’t guarantee athletic success but it dang sure makes it more likely to do so. Bad hires and bad decisions (ala Vandy disbanding their athletic department in 2003) will stop you from succeeding in most sports, no matter how much funding you have.

Duke basketball is likely to suck ass over the next 5 years. Gonna be hard to replace K
You're a special kind of moron. They only have the best recruiting class in 10 yrs and their coach will be fantastic with a background of having played for the greatest, played in the NBA and coach alongside the greatest for nearly 15 yrs
