Expansion

Let’s just create one system with multiple league that feed each other through a series of relegation and promotion. That would be the most interesting way to do it.

Which league would we be in after the last three years?

We need to do something as a conference

Shiny new thing. It's pretty ööööty if you really look at the sum of the individual parts. The rotting entrails of what's left of the old Big 12 Frankensteined with with Mountain West/ConfUSA mutts and Pac12 scraps.

This all comes down to the short sightedness of USC and UCLA. öööö them. Say what you will about expansion everywhere else, but at least there was an attempt at geographic cohesion. The big 12 took scraps from where it could but everyone else is contiguous. So öööö you Big 10 and öööö you USC/UCLA.

Would seem to be a pretty cool way to do it. But good luck recruiting in the lower levels.
That’s what happens. Some teams make the top multiple seasons then have the money to stay there forever. But a few teams jump back and forth.

No league would ever agree to it, but I like it because
  • You play teams that are competitively similar (no Vandy or Rutgers games)
  • No matter how bad you are, there’s always a way to the top
  • If you’re at the bottom of the league it’s still exciting to watch games (to avoid relegation)
  • You have to earn your way to the championship. No beauty contest.
The challenge is that even if you get to the $40 million per year top league, there’s always a chance you’ll be in the $20 million per year 2nd tier the next year or a $5 million per year 3rd tier in a few years, so it’s really hard to invest in infrastructure unless you have an owner willing to go into personal funds.

ehh, Utah and Colorado did not really fit PAC12. This is a much better fit. Maybe same can be said for the Arizona teams. Utah and BYU in the same conference is great too.

UCF, Cincy and WVU are the ones that don't belong. We will see if they last. I did go to a WVU at UT game back in the day, which was a lof of fun and contentiuous in the stands. 1400 mile trip for the Mountaineers! The old Big East just needs to come back and absorb these teams plus Pitt/UL minus Miami/BC.

Interesting how it looks like its shaping up as the B1G vs the SEC as the two goliaths left standing. Also interesting how the B1G has no problem expanding into new territory. Pretty sure the SEC’s identity is tightly associated with its geography. If Notre Dame asked to join the SEC, I’m actually not sure they would say yes.
Looks at this point like the B1G has the SEC surrounded but I think they have one card left to play and they are saving it for last.
Texas, Oklahoma and Missouri are totally not new territory. But if you mean states connected to other states, well Indiana is connected to Kentucky so they'd accept Notre Dame in a heartbeat.

I can agree with that. Some of the conventional wisdom has been thrown on its head. 2 weeks ago it wouldn't have made any sense for a conference to add 2 schools in the same smallish markets, like AZ/AZST, UT/BYU (PHX is a pro town). Maybe at least a recognition that regional rivalries add value.

What happens to the Leftovers?
- Stanford
- Cal
- Oregon State
- Washington State

Join the Mountain West?
Poach the Mountain West and add:
- Boise State
- San Diego State
- Nevada
- Utah State

I'm worried this will be Tech in a couple of years. Replace Stanford with GT. Left out in the cold.

ACC-Big 12 should merge and add the remaining four PAC schools. Add two more schools and you have 4 nine team divisions. You have a national footprint that should garner terrific media deals. You can create regional rivalries but also set up a very interesting playoff system.

I wonder what the mass exodus of transfers will look like for Cal, Stanford, Oregon St, Washington St. Talk about devastating.
