Expansion

I wonder if the revenue projections will be impacted by spectrum cancelling Disney/ESPN ??
I'd like to see the updated revenue projections over a 10 year span!

I didn't agree with adding them but I get the $$ argument. I think the reason why Stanford and Cal are also not expecting more revenue is I think they all know this is a stop gap measure for another re-alignment. I think in the end, the Western schools will find themselves in another resurrected conference out West, and all the other Power 5 conference teams. I think the only one that's regionally stable is the SEC. I still wouldn't mind being in that conference if the ACC implodes in the future. I'm all about regionality, for FB and all Title IX sports. What might make me look favorable on this whole thing is if there's some ultra secret plan for ND to come into the ACC because of this move.

The other fun part will be realigning the conference rivals thing. If you thought GT having Louisville and Wake as permanent “rivals” was bad, just wait until we drop on of those and get one or more of the new three as our assigned “rival.”
Seems they should just get each other.

An interesting factoid…

IIRC, we adapted “White and Gold” from Cal:

So…then… it’s…
Up with the Blue and Gold,
Down with the Red;
California’s out for a victory.
We’ll drop our battle-axe on
Stanford’s head, Chop!
When we meet her, our team will surely beat her.
Down on the Stanford Farm there’ll be no sound,
When our Oski rips through the air.
Like our friend Mister Jonah,
Stanford’s team will be found
In the tummy of the Golden Bear!

So the “farm” we always sing about was technically Stanford, which was founded on a cattle farm or something. This expansion means that Cal will hear us singing their song, and we’ll actually play down on the farm.

This isn't a long term deal. I believe all parties know the next CFP contact will really be the impetus to blow it all up. When the CFP gets redone in 2026 all bets are off. Look for the SEC and B1G to go for shares based on participation in the CFP, not automatic bids. If they accomplish that then the SEC and B1G have the reason to go after the biggest football schools that have the potential to make CFP at least once in a while and exclude those that don't. My guess is this would be a football only league. Sorry Ole Mis, Miss St., and Vandy. You are being replaced with FSU, Clemson, and, Utah.

Add Washington State and Oregon State and a third team if ND refuses to play football like the rest of the conference. Maybe Tulane to have New Orleans and one school close to SMU.

This gives you reasonable scheduling options We could also consider buying an old cruise liner that can go through the Canal to use for sports team traveling to the Pacific rim of the ACC..

Not disputing what you said, but do we know when each of the similar songs was written and first used? I mean, it IS POSSIBLE that they stole ours.

Since we are expanding toward the Pacific we ought to beat the other conferences to Wuhan. That is a lot of new eyeballs for ESPN, ABC and the CW. I understand their research programs there have worldwide influence. With our Asian student population they could be a permanent rival for us. It ought to be a football win most years.

It’s all shrouded in mystery, as there are several fight songs with similar tunes/lyrics. But the reference to “the farm” in White and Gold has no particular meaning in GT lore (other than a retroactive interpretation disparaging our cow college rival), while “Stanford Farm” was/is(?) explicitly a thing.

Cal speculates that we swiped it at the 1929 Rose Bowl, but Tech dates our version of the song earlier than that. I think Cal claims 1913 and Tech claims 1918, or something like that.

Also take a look at the Colorado School of Mines fight song…

I’m kinda annoyed to see no mention of GT in any of the reactions to this, both in the press and on other boards. We’ve really fallen off the radar.

The article linked a couple of posts above talks about prestigious universities like Virginia, Carolina, and Duke. The talk of the best teams in the conference focuses on Clemson, FSU, and ever-inexplicably UNC.

Hopefully we’ll be more than an afterthought eventually.
