What's your definition of working? I would argue that CPJ has been the best offensive coach in GT history (modern era). Clemson is kicking our ass these days, but if that's your standard for success then good luck finding a coach that can be consistently successful against that defense. We haven't beaten them since 2014, but they've only lost a total of 3 games since then. Sure, we struggle sometimes against the big boys, not all of the time. We run all over UGA about 75% of the time, and we move the ball on VT as well as anyone. Miami has been a thorn in our side, but that has been a defensive problem as much as anything.

This has been a frustrating season, for sure, and things are certainly not as good as I thought they would be after 2009. However, we have won an ACC title, been to two Orange Bowls, and won back-to-back games in Athens. We have our fair share of issues, but I would argue that defense and recruiting are problems 1A and 1B. Offensive scheme and playcalling are like problem 715 and 716. I think criticism of CPJ is very fair - I just think it's naive to focus so much on the 3O, which is very clearly the strength of our coach and team.
 
One other thing to consider, when CPJ first got here we would constantly hear how the offense allowed us to recruit players who were good system fits for us that the factories overlooked. Nowadays, even Bama runs option concepts.

I think this is still true. What surprised me was how much our percentage of GA kids has increased. I'd like to see the administration commit to a bigger recruiting budget to cast a wider net.

The players Ross recruited after a two win season in '87 won a MNC. The players Ross recruited after a MNC won 1 game 4 years later. How in the hell does that happen? Really, how does that happen? There is something strange buried under BDS that hates consistency. What does an engineer love most? Consistency! If you do A then B happens. Maybe it's something like matter/anti matter. The engineers suck up all the consistency north of North Avenue and there is none left for the football team. If you don't love a roller coaster, then you're going to hate Tech football.

It's just regression at QB, and line injuries that are hurting us. Well, the WR's are mediocre, the BB is meh, the AB's are really not going too much. Oh yeah, we're shaky at kicker, and can't cover a kick. Kick returns are funny too...Cottrell has no shake or wiggle, really no ability to change directions when running. Defense is a bright spot for me, but we're having to play too many downs and athletically we're no great shakes. Think Roof is doing well with pretty average talent.

Besides that, we're good. IIWII

Oddities everywhere. Haven't we had more success at VT than at UVA since VT joined the conference? And yet VT has beaten UVA something like 13 times straight. I still have the scar from the loss at UVA when we had Hamilton and a 17 point lead while UVA was using a third or fourth string qb. We play much better against uga in athens than we do in Atlanta. I think that has been true since Pepper. We have broken Clemson's heart more times than anyone else. They have to be at least 10 points better than us to win. Right now they are about three TDs better than us (and most everybody else). That will change. We've had much more success against FSU than Miami under CPJ, and FSU has owned Miami during that time. Other than Clemson, CPJ owns the Atlantic, and he was at .500 against Clemson until this year.

Our team always seems to have a fragile psyche. Get a couple of breaks to win games early in the season, and they begin to believe they are good. Lose a couple (by one friggin point), and they begin to question themselves.

Ross had much more leeway in recruiting than any coach since; JUCO transfers were an integral part of the NC team. After the NC, Ross was focused on the NFL and recruiting fell off. While he and Lewis did recruit some very good skill players, the talent on both lines dropped off significantly after '90.

We usually struggle against the big boys, as our 13-26 overall record under CPJ makes clear. Until this year, these weren't even very-good Miami teams that were beating us. Same goes for VPI.

Our O is 40th in nation in scoring and 42nd in total yards. To me, that's "not working". Those stats are nothing to be proud of and I'd bet CPJ is not. The scheme is supposed to provide us an advantage - an equalizer of sorts - and it's clearly not doing that as the results and stats this year show.

Our last ACC title was 8 years ago and even that team couldn't beat Richt's worst mutt team at home.

I agree re:Recruiting. While the D absolutely needs improvement as well, I don't think we can ignore the glaring problems on O either.

We have to score on every position to mitigate our defensive ineptitude.
 
How fast can we install a retractable roof over BDS? Preferably not one that looks like Mega Trons anus like MBS

It is not the toughest school in the world, but can we agree MIT and Cal Tech and Harvey Mudd aren't even attempting to play P5 football? If we aren't the toughest in the FBS division, I'd be surprised.
