It’s Comical How Bad of a Head Coach Geoff Collins Is/Was

None of your examples did the crazy and attempted revolutionary things our coach did to try to build a “culture.”

Agreed. He took it to a different level, but those are guys whose antics would wear thin if they were losing. Actually, in the case of Rhule and Mullen, that happened.

Not sure about the exact gimmicks, but Matt Rhule, PJ Fleck, and even Dan Mullen are from that general school of coaching. Problem is that Collins actually believed his own hype and didn't surround himself with competent people and allow them to do their thing. He also tried to reinvent the wheel when it came to tried and true methods of running football practices. You can do hype if you've got everything else in order. Collins didn't.
I’m convinced that if you really compared P J Fleck to Collins, most would declare Collins as the more traditional coach. However, Fleck has consistently won at Minnesota so their fans ignore his antics.

I am convinced that you are 100% incorrect. PJ Fleck does the weird things. He doesn’t force his team to do the weird things.

Fleck, Mullen, et al prepared to win football games each week, I.e., they had scout teams in practice running schemes and plays their opponent was likely to use

It was apparent by the lack of preparation under that practices were a reflection of him
A bad joke

The only cultures he built were of losing and a lack of accountability (re: bailing on Savannah QB Club after Citadel and the BS he fed Derrick Moore)

Honestly, I’d have fired him after the VPI loss in 19

Collins is a shameless self-promoter, and we knew that after the 2007 recruiting class when he jumped to Bama making all sorts of claims about how he made it happen at GA Tech. Only problem was, Giff Smith was our RC those years, not TFG. Now TFG was certainly part of that great recruiting year, but Giff reset our recruiting strategy having been named the RC in 2006 after Dave Wilson was fired following the 2005 season. TFG's wiki page still fraudulently lists him as RC at Tech in 2006.

The guy is a shyster.

Yep, as an "assistant "in recruiting I could see how his BS with recruits could be disguised because Gif probably controlled that some.

He sure has revealed his character with all his BS. He doesn’t understand that if you really are good at your job, others will paradise your accomplishments and ability. Hmm. Then again, maybe understands all too well.

I am literally sitting right next Collins at my kids camp performance. Can’t think of a single positive thing to say as an ice breaker. Changing seats.
Don’t you give him a pass. At any other school he’d be ran out of town by now.

The man doesn't have to work since he's got such a nice income stream from the buyout. However, the longer you sit out the harder it is to find another gig on the level you were at. Has he not been hired yet or is he just taking time off with the kids? It's been 8 months.

Body of work speaks for itself. He's basically the Bud Light of coaching. No one wants to be seen buying that.

To a point, it wasn’t stupid to take a coach like Collins to be the first after Johnson. We needed a rebranding, Collins was good at that and recruiting. I think we were going to have a couple of awful years no matter what.

The problem was over paying (both in dollars and length of contract) and then Stansbury not recognizing Collins was over his head as a Head Coach. At the end of the day, it worked out for Tech (except the money): Batt is an upgrade, it got the Pres of the school to focus on football, it wiped the slate for the next coach, and Key and staff are good for Tech all things considered.

I still can’t believe Stansbury couldn’t figure it out. Oh well.

Agree with everything you said except the rebranding. We’ll likely not agree on that and that’s OK. The rest of your thoughts are spot on IMPO.

We needed rebranding for multiple reasons. Unless we decided to stay an option program forever, then HS recruits needed to hear something new. Now some of the rebranding was nonsense or stupid but FWIW, we are still using a lot of it.

Like many of Collins tenure, he had some good ideas and some bad. He wasn’t smart enough to figure out the difference.
