Jeff Sims

11 games in .. an opener against NIU against a nowhere near full house ... can't come out tight. No way.
Bryce Young came out in his first start, not at home, against Miami and said, (unzipping sound), "here it is." Hell, Jack Coan had his first start for ND (though far from his first start overall) on national TV against Florida State, with someone who kills people as a head coach, and he wasn't tight. Nah, no pressure there. None at all.

Sims does have a ton of potential. He's extremely elusive (a less mobile QB would have been sacked three times as many as he was last year. He really bailed out his O line a ton). I hope he hits his groove and soon.
To be fair, Sims came out in his first game firing the ball and hit 23 completions. You'd have to go back a very long time to find another QB who completed 23 balls at GT. So I think he CAN do it. I like what I saw from Yates, but it's far too early to pull the plug on Sims.

Wouldn't you rather ignore all that and throw the young man under the bus for one bad performance?!?!?!

C'mon, man!

Sims has had plenty of bad performances not just 1 but my point isn't to throw anyone under the bus just wondering if we wouldn't win more games with a more polished QB like Yates.

Do you really think we were the only other program in the country to want him at QB? He was a 4* dual-threat QB recruit...
I'm sure there where other teams recruiting him as a QB but what teams?

Was it like Justin Thomas? Elite teams wanted him at other positions, but not at QB?

He was running for his life last season on almost every pass play

Listen, we’ve seen Sims play in every game since last September. We see what he is. He is an athlete playing QB. Sure, he had some decent games. That’s going to happen. But there is nothing to indicate there is any consistency that GT can rely on week to week. I was hoping the off season work and all the excuses we heard were valid. But unfortunately he was just horrible and appears completely overmatched. Collins is going to ride him because he is his guy so if I’m wrong Sims has another 11 games to prove himself. I’d love to be wrong, but after watching every game this weekend our QB play isn’t even in the same ballpark as most.

Sims is more than an athlete playing QB. He is a R-Fr QB. He’s going to make mistakes.

That said, he had a horrible game. There is no sugar coating that. I would be surprised if his QB rating was more than 5 pts higher than mine.

Maybe I'm remembering it wrong, but wasn't he already committed to FSU as a QB and then flipped to us with the coaching change they had? Or maybe wasn't committed yet but was figured a lock previously?

If you can't see that Sims has more upside than Yates, then you're blind. Yes, he had a bad game. I too was hoping that he would show more (secure the ball when carrying it, make the easy passes, etc.). But the only way to reach his potential is to play in games. You can compare him to other R-FR QB's out there, but it's a team game and there are other mitigating factors that weigh into comparing him to other QB's. Joe Ham also had issues until he "got it" late in his 2nd year.

I was hoping that Sims would get pulled on the 3rd series to figure out what was wrong with him. Then send him back out. That didn't happen. Yates certainly outplayed him. But to replace your starting QB after one quarter is stupid.

Am I the only one who thought Yates looked better in these 3 quarters than Sims ever has? I know he doesn't have the size and speed of Sims but he looks like a real qb. He makes good decisions and it accurate with this throws.
When we took Sims out against Syracuse last year….Yates looked like crap too.

No. I think most teams were recruiting him as a straight QB.

We also took a lot of the starters out with him that game. This is the first time Yates has played in games with the first team in a competitive game. Yates was handing he ball off to Swilling that game.

Starters? On our OL last season?

Sims played bad Saturday and was quite obviously off on his throws. It looked to me like he was so concerned about overthrowing his guys from being amped that he took something off his throws and was mainly shorting them. I expect we will see a much different Sims Saturday.

We don’t have to throw the football once to beat Kennesaw. That’s what’s so infuriating about last week’s loss. Winning against these nobody teams should be incredibly easy…all you have to do is force them to make you pass. And even then they probably still aren’t going to stop you from running.

Patenaude repeatedly calling pass plays on 3rd and 2 only to go for it on 4th and 2 made me sick to my stomach. He’s a ööööing dumbass. I don’t care how good he sounded in his presser.

The way I see it, CGC will make the decision he feels gives us the best chance to win and he'll own the results. I won't worry about who's playing, but if we continue to lose to teams like last weekend, we should all worry about who's coaching.

I'll give you Yates looked better in those 3 quarters than Sims did in his 1, but not better than Sims ever has. Yates made some good decisions and was accurate with some throws, but he tucked some and ran when he had a perfect pocket to pass out of, and missed a few throws. One in particular he underthrew Gibbs on a wheel route that would've been a TD, and another time he never saw Gibbs wide open in the endzone and ran for a short gain.
Yates had a 43 yard pass on the td drive that tied the game.
It was a good play, but had he thrown that ball outside the numbers and led Carter, that would've been a TD because he had his man beat.

My above points are to state that Yates is not "more polished." Sims had a bad start then got hurt. He very well may have turned it around. Let's also not forget that after Yates came in, our defense got 7 stops out of 8 possessions by NIU, and all we could muster on offense was 21 points. That's not exactly lighting up the scoreboard. Yates may very well have been our best option Saturday even without Sims getting hurt. He may have just been off the whole night, but I still think it's too small of a sample size to say he is better than Sims when apparently Sims has been the clear #1 throughout spring, summer and fall camp. I'm glad we have Yates for this exact scenario, but I still believe Sims has a higher ceiling and we don't know how he would've finished that game.
