Maybe choice has been made

Maryland didn't want to get rid of Ross. Ross just became fed up with the administration following the Len Bias tragedy and decided to resign. He was about to take an assistant job with the Bills under Marv Levy when Homer Rice called. The GM of the Bills warned Bobby Ross that if he interviewed at Tech he was finished in Buffalo. He interviewed and the Bills rescinded the job offer and we got him at the just the right time.
And if it happened today we would have fired Ross before we caught fire, and 90% of this board would have said it happened a year too late.

I don’t think he is the x and 0 guy you think he is and Bama fans recognize this….that is my point. His RPO schemes are light years behind Sarkisians when he was there. He is a serviceable coach who is loaded with talent with a tremendous QB. He will not have that at GT. That’s fine if that is your preference for the next head coach, it just does nothing for me.
Actually he was an above x and o's guy with the Texans, his failure was as a GM.

Penn State got worse under O'Brien, then they got better when he left. Mediocre to poor head coaching resume. Yes, scandal, so what. It's football, and it's not like there was some mass exodus of players.

Who else's prior college head coaching experience consisted of taking over a team for two seasons and doing worse? Hmm.

Then O'Brien was mediocre as a pro coach.

I see a weak resume. No thanks. Next!
PSU managed to become the poster child both for why the NCAA’s death penalty exists and why it’s a complete joke. Sandusky permanently tarnished the life’s work of PSU’s Bobby Dodd (and probably hastened his death). But, yeah, it was just a run of the mill scandal, coaching PSU post-Sandusky was totally comparable to coaching Temple post Rhule, and O’Brien failed by not putting 10 in the win column every year there. His resume is öööö, not really different from Collins.

No idea if the OBrien rumor is true. won’t surprise me if it isn’t. And I'm not here to sell O’Brien. But he wouldn’t be another Collins, with thinnest of coaching resumes.

The Sandusky scandal, the non-enforcement of the death penalty, and the too big to fail argument employed by PSU (if you kill our program you’ll destroy every small business in Pennsyltucky!) was the final nail for the college football is an amateur sport narrative. It made NIL and the transfer portal inevitable. That’s how much of a non-event it was as a scandal.

This is the big problem for us right now: college football has changed so much in the last 20 (and 10, and 2) years that the old comparisons and the old ideas won't work. Without investing in the program, neither O'Leary nor PJ nor Dodd himself would be successful in this environment.
Bingo.

You are assuming that all 3 mentioned coaches would't have adapted. They were all very very good game day and game prep coaches, which is what separates most coaches, whether in today's or yesterday's cFB World.

Actually he was an above x and o's guy with the Texans, his failure was as a GM.

I’m referring more to his college experience…still don’t see home being significantly above average X and O, regardless what he did at Houston. Again, if you like him that’s fine.. I just think we could do better as opposed to taking “it could be worse” approach.

Would you think BOB could be announced sooner than candidates that are current HC?

Seems obvious to me but maybe I’m looking at it wrong.

Like Bobby Ross. Can you believe we hired that guy?

At least we didn’t fall into that trap again with Bill Lewis. That was smart money paying ECU for him.

More like Gregory and Pastner. Many of us have moved on from the 80s.

Kirby did, and the guy UGA lost to Oregon.
What? The question was would BOB be announced any sooner than someone that is already a HC... the answer is no. Nobody will be announced until the season is over unless it is someone currently unemployed.

He can only jump if he's successful. I'd take someone who has built the program to a point where the NFL is willing to give him a second look.
Rice, IMO BOB would be a 21st century Gailey. I would not characterize the Chan Gailey Equilibrium of 7-5 to 5-7 as a success. Better than now, yes. But not satisfactory.
