Maybe choice has been made

2011 - 9-4 - Paterno

2016 - 11-3 - Franklin
2017 - 11-2 - Franklin
2018 - 9-4 - Franklin
2019 - 11-3 - Franklin

Gailey-esque. We know Penn State 8-4 is a GT 7-5 or GT 6-6
I have to give BOB credit for keeping Penn St from falling into oblivion after the Sandusky scandal and taking over after a legendary coach.

BOB would be a solid hire for GT, just not the most exciting.

I wouldn't hate it. I think it would be the most solid, safest hire for GT from the list of candidates I've seen.

Aside: I wonder where we would be now if Stansbury had hired Whisenhunt like he had initially wanted?

O'Brien isn't my top choice at all, but he does have head coaching experience at the P5 level, and he has been pretty successful. We could do a lot worse. I would like to see what Chadwell can do.

Paterno was let go during the 2011 season. PSU was nailed by the NCAA. There was a mass exodus and a bowl ban, yet BOB had a 8-4, 7-5 run at PSU.

Bowl ban doesn't mean much. There are teams that have gone undefeated with a bowl ban. I don't recall a mass exodus of players, but if there was one, sure, 8-4 is decent. My argument is not that O'Brien is bad, just that his resume is unremarkable.

I like how you coincidentally didn‘t add in the past 2 seasons for PSU (4-5, 7-6). Franklin is a good coach, but there fanbase was ready to let him walk last year. PSU instead gave him a huge raise / extension when no one was really coming for him.

That's fair, I stopped at the weird Covid season because that season was such a disaster. Big Ten didn't even play until like October if I remember correctly.

Of course he doesn’t. Just like he ignored the lengthy success BOB had as the Texans HC. 6.5 years in the NFL with 1 losing season is hard to believe in the new era of firing HC’s.
That‘s actually pretty impressive, especially since his QB’s were not exactly top shelf

Bowl bans were nothing compared with the real penalties - There was a cap in scholarships and a limit on how many recruits he could sign in year one, on top of departures. And he had the same record as Paterno in his last year

I’m not some BOB homer. Maybe he’s the best guy maybe not. But man the uninformed but firm opinions on these boards is staggering

The effects of recruiting limits and scholarship caps would be delayed, I'd think. You keep the players you have on scholarship and reduce recruiting. The penalties may explain Franklin's initial 7-6 years more than it does Bill O'Brien's record.

Put another way: How do you think those penalties would affect O'Brien in his first and second season? I'm not sure he was handicapped as much as is being suggested.

Hiring BOB would be like playing not to lose. Isn't to say he'd do bad per se.

If this is true, then I say good thing we just got rid of an AD who specialized in the hiring version of inbreeding so we could get another AD who goes straight to the hiring version of inbreeding.
Cronyism; that's the word I couldn't think of before.

Bama folks haven’t won öööö. Saban has. And Saban had enough confidence in BOB to put him in charge of his offense.

He may be boring or whatever, but we just had exciting, goofy, attention whoreing style coach and that sucked. I’m willing to give boring a chance if it can win. I’d much rather have a football coach in BOB than a hype man in Deion.

I don’t think he is the x and 0 guy you think he is and Bama fans recognize this….that is my point. His RPO schemes are light years behind Sarkisians when he was there. He is a serviceable coach who is loaded with talent with a tremendous QB. He will not have that at GT. That’s fine if that is your preference for the next head coach, it just does nothing for me.

He’s not my preference. I just think we could do a whole lot worse and that BOB is a reasonable, even if not exciting, option.

If the AD saga is any guide here, nobody on this board knows jack about who we're looking at.
Most likely someone he's had a close-up view of their work. Not so sure the dwag infested search firm, will have much sway with J, but they could weed out guys with skeletons in closet.

Here's another thought I haven't seen anyone make about BoB... What if Bama is in the playoffs? Are we going to be without a coach until mid-January? Most coordinators do not leave their current job if they are in the playoffs. Some stay on for regular bowl games. IMO we HAVE to have a HC in place making hires and recruiting by the 1st week of Dec.

This would make perfect sense for Tech. We exclusively hire coaches that current programs want to get rid of.
Like Bobby Ross. Can you believe we hired that guy?

At least we didn’t fall into that trap again with Bill Lewis. That was smart money paying ECU for him.

Maryland didn't want to get rid of Ross. Ross just became fed up with the administration following the Len Bias tragedy and decided to resign. He was about to take an assistant job with the Bills under Marv Levy when Homer Rice called. The GM of the Bills warned Bobby Ross that if he interviewed at Tech he was finished in Buffalo. He interviewed and the Bills rescinded the job offer and we got him at the just the right time.

Maryland’s athletic program was imploding as the administration blamed “the athletic program culture” for Bias’s death. Ross was talking to the Bills because college programs weren’t interested. He was considered a gamble at the time.

BOB jumped from PennSt to the NFL first chance he got. He sees himself as a pro coach, and he’d use GT as a bridge job back to the NFL if he can. Nope. Nope. Nopity nope nope.
