Maybe choice has been made

Rice, IMO BOB would be a 21st century Gailey. I would not characterize the Chan Gailey Equilibrium of 7-5 to 5-7 as a success. Better than now, yes. But not satisfactory.

Doesn't seem fair to say 5-7 is part of the Chan Gailey equilibrium.

He never had a season where he only won 5 games -- in fact, he never had a season where he only won 6 games. Won 7 every year except the year where he won 9. And he never had a season where he lost 7 games, either -- two seasons where he lost 6 and every other season he only lost 5.

Chan's time here was mediocre as hell but there's no need to misrepresent it.

Bill O'Brien runs that "NFL offense" over at 'Bama.

He may be the type to draw recruits that want to play in the league, and perhaps he would be the answer if we want to compete with Georgia and Clemson.

And if it happened today we would have fired Ross before we caught fire, and 90% of this board would have said it happened a year too late.
Having experienced this period as a younger man I can tell you the confidence most of us had that Ross would turn it around was high, even when it looked like a complete train wreck. Nobody expected a National Championship, but beating the assholes up the road and being real competitive every game was expected. Ross was a winner, a proven winner and we knew he’d be challenged by Curry’s weak leadership and ensuing rot permeating the program. Once he cleared house we anticipated 7-8 wins a year as his floor with an occasion great season. We just got it sooner than expected. I personally thought we stole him, one of the best gets ever for GT. The access to info is much higher now, so are the stakes, so is the ability to bitch and moan, etc. Fuses may have been longer in the past, fanbase a took longer to piss off, etc but comparing Ross to the charlatan we just had or even the inexperienced Key is sort of amusing in a way. No where near the same scenario. Ross was a high performing HC with a track record to match. If he failed it was going to be extremely surprising.

It wouldn't be the answer, because they will always draw more of those kind of recruits than we will. Not saying we need a coach that doesn't run that kind of offense, but we need more than just an ability to conform to what attracts NFL minor league types.

Chan and Paul did more with less than they get credit for.

Chan was the equivalent of Goof, Donnan and Richt- less with more. O'Leary with Chan talent wins a NC if he has it 5 or 6 years, Johnson probably comes close given a decade of opportunities.

Excellent post. Also, you mentioned that we took off after he cleared house, but the thing that impressed me about him was that he was genuinely upset with himself that he couldn't do it sooner.

We could do alot better like Jamey Chadwell.
I don't understand the love for Chadwell. Delta State was perennial powerhouse in D2. Chadwell took over and went 3-7 before he bolted to Charleston Southern after that single year. He goes 35-14 there but leaves to take the OC job at Coastal. The next year Charleston Southern gets hammered for violations while Chadwell was there and vacate more than half of those wins and one of their league championships (sound familiar?).

And here's a scary stat...Chadwell is 42-27 as OC of Coastal (37-20 as HC) before this year. The OC before Chadwell was 51-17 over his five years. That was some guy named Dave Patenaude.

There’s a Head Coach that is in his 2nd season at the major state university in the “Land of Lincoln” who most likely will be playing in its conference championship. Hint..it’s 10 Large

Disturbing.

Forgot about North Greenville

Unintentional, but I did find it curious that he had two excellent seasons and then leaves for Delta State a month after losing to them in the D2 playoffs. Probably a money thing but he jumped from the #12 team in D2 to the #1 team (and promptly had a losing season).

Here's a good write-up with all the of the stats laid out. I interpret them much differently than you. Seems like he's improved everywhere he's been.

I like Chadwell, but my only concern is that his offense would get labeled as "option" or "gimmick" at the P5 level and it would again be hard to recruit to unless it's a factory or place that recruits itself already.

Why in the hell do you guys pay attention to anything the OP says? He's an idiot.

Bowl ban doesn't mean much. There are teams that have gone undefeated with a bowl ban. I don't recall a mass exodus of players, but if there was one, sure, 8-4 is decent. My argument is not that O'Brien is bad, just that his resume is unremarkable.
You understand that Penn st had only 67 players on scholarship that year? Penn st didn’t just have a bowl ban but scholarship as well. They had 15 players transfer (in a time when the portal didn’t exist). The Qb was a true freshman as were most of the Oline. What BoB did at PSU was remarkable.

Chadwell was not responsible for those violations, it was spread throughout the entire athletic dept iirc. Also Pnut was the OC at Coastal when they were FCS and left in’16, Chadwell became OC in ‘19 and it was a rebuild job at that point after the move to FBS in 2017
