Next head coach

Gailey was a QB away from having a very good team and left GT in great shape talent wise. We probably pulled the trigger too early on him.

No. Gailey showed zero ability to develop a qb. He didn’t really show an ability to develop a WR either, although the two are intertwined.

Gailey could develop RBs though. Even Emmett Smith said Gailey taught him things he didn’t know.

Ummm what do you mean by develop WR's??

I know this is a joke but honestly I'd take him right now. I think Collins needs to work through some things at the Saban Coach Rehabilitation School. We all fail in life and its hard. Gailey was a great recruiter and ran a tight ship. He just needed a few more coaches around him and to be less conservative on some play calls.

One personal Gailey story. When I was 12 years old my dad took me to see a Tech football practice. After practice I wanted coach to sign my autograph football. When we got to him he was swarmed by reporters so we stood behind them a waited patiently. Before he answered the reporters first question he saw us and interrupted them and said "Excuse me I need to see this young man for a moment". He then came up to us to speak to us and sign my football. We probably talked for 4-6 minutes. Much longer than he needed to but the wanted to make sure that we were seen. He then told one of his assistance to get our names and address to send us some Tech merch. Sure enough a week later we got a package in the mail with some free Tech merch. I will never for get that. Gailey is a good man and I am sure Collins is too. That doesn't always make you a great football coach but moments like that stick with you.
Nobody could get the players like Chan but biggest problem he had was calling the plays..........O Brien had been under the tutaledge of Ralphie and yet Chan seemed to question lot of his calls.........second problem was secondary folks........we did not cover well and of course third washanging the years on Reggie Ball............never get ove r the blall sailing in stands at sanford stadiiuim

Nebraska has become a very difficult place to recruit in the CFP era. Kids don't want to waste a visit to get on campus. Frost will find success again elsewhere.
I think he’d be a helluva hire in the right place. Maybe even here.

I miss the days of "He only went 7-5. Fire him!" Much better than, "I know we lost by 30, but we played a good quarter in there and this time we didn't lose 73-7."

Gaily came in with flunk gate and never let us sink to the lows we have today. Outside of the first year against Uga I think he was pretty competitive.
I remember thinking to myself after we lost to UGA 51-7 in '02 that I would never forgive Gailey. These days, that result is expected under Coach Clown:

19: 52-7
20: wiped out
21: 45-0 (could have been a lot worse)

Gailey had 1 WR drafted (Calvin). How much did he develop over his career at Tech?

Did Gailey develop Thomas? That is arguable. Johnson put 3 other WR into the league, none of whom were as highly ranked as Calvin coming into school. It is more likely Johnson’s staff developed Thomas.

OTOH, Gailey got 4 RB drafted, none of whom were 5 stars coming in. That doesn’t count Dwyer, who would have probably been better off under Gailey.

The problem is that the last several years they have been light years past us in talent. In 2002 they were not.

What about Chip Long? Demote Collins to DC
Long is more or less auditioning for the job now. Wouldn’t promote Long and retain Collins, unless both really wanted that. Would be difficult position for Long. Probably can’t demote Collins mid season without violating his contract. If Long looks promising by mid season he’d be be the safe option. Similar to O’Leary’s hiring (except we’d wait til end of season).

For every coach who tries to call plays as a head coach there probably a half dozen or more total fails.
