Next head coach

Long is more or less auditioning for the job now. Wouldn’t promote Long and retain Collins, unless both really wanted that. Would be difficult position for Long. Probably can’t demote Collins mid season without violating his contract. If Long looks promising by mid season he’d be be the safe option. Similar to O’Leary’s hiring (except we’d wait til end of season).

yeah I was joking about the Collins part but Long does seem like a reasonable solution when we can Collins

I mean, a cut block trades your blocker for a defender (your guy goes to the ground, and ideally the defender does too). You could still run all the plays with the A-backs staying on their feet and blocking traditionally.
An Anthony Allen type sure. Maybe even a Roddy Jones type. But most of the scat back types that become Abacks are too small to straight up block a linebacker and many safetys effectively. It can be done but it’s more difficult with the rule changes.

And the 3O won’t be and shouldn’t come back to Tech. Not because it can’t work, it did. But the stigma was never overcome despite the stats, number of explosion plays, and points put up on the board. Defense (and recruiting l) was the failure during CPJ not the offense. And imo most of those two problems were due to lack of adequate funding. But the stigmas remained and grew. That ship has sailed. I think it will eventually be successful again elsewhere but not again at Tech.
Football inches closer to flag football every year and becomes less fun to watch. Maybe the rules will change back but I doubt it.

I have zero interest in going 3-O again. It's a program killer. You trade some wins in the here and now for losing long-term... as in you kill energy & outside perspective around your program, kill recruiting, kill any shot you have at attracting new/young fans who want to see something more exciting than 3 yds and a cloud of dust. I get that all this losing over the past 3 seasons AIN'T IT either... but there's some middle ground somewhere where we can win games and compete with the bigger programs without going straight 3-O.

I personally am pulling for Collins to have success this year. I know that ship has already sailed for many... If he doesn't then we need to pull the plug and find someone better suited to complete our transition away from 3-O football.

Our stadium isn't empty because of cpj

3 yards and a cloud of dust beats what we did against Clemson.

I agree that we don't have to go to the 3/o. In fact, if we got monken I'd prefer that he didn't run the pure cpj playbook. But the way some people prefer losing with a pro or "modern" offense to just winning is baffling to me.

Georgia Southern never had that stigma with the 3O. Southern fans loved it. Tech’s competition propagandized against it and media pukes fell right in line with it. Despite the success the offense had. You will never convince the haters or change their minds. It’s akin to religious fanaticism.

Ha, couldn't have let me finish editing my post after I hit post too early? :)

It's also why we couldn't really hire someone from the CPJ coaching tree to run some 'not quite the 3O' offense, modern or not, as some have suggested. It would probably be viewed as trying to bring the same 3O back regardless of what is actually run.

Southern fans wanted the 3O back and once Monken left Willie Fritz came in and more a spread version on the 3O. They moved away from it with Tyson Summers and brought it back with Chad Lunsford. But Clay Helton is quickly changing southern fans minds with a pass happy offence that's putting up big points and yards. I really think Clay Helton is going to be on Tech's coaching search list if Collins is fired.

I spoke to my best friend who's a big Southern fan and he said he has never seen a Southern team that disciplined and on the same page before. Clay Helton may be the guy we need. We'll see how he does the rest of the year at Southern.

There was an idea of making the Abacks more in the Orwin Smith mode, but it never developed because OS type guys had options in more traditional offenses. Our Abacks were great because they were high school baller RBs who didn’t have the body for that position in college. They were talented guys who just didn’t fit in most offenses. The rule changes meant they were less of a fit for the 3O too.

I think clay Helton will be a candidate for sure, he has major ties to the south

Southern fans are smart enough to recognize successful offenses and desire them. The 3O aint magical. It's successful when coached properly and with adequate talent. Just like every other proven scheme out there. Southern fans liked and continue to like the 3O. But not at the exclusion of other successful schemes.

This is pretty much spot on. After the first 2 games we've had, nobody is really wanting the TO right now. Even in our last coaching search, the general consensus was that they want to move away from it. Do we like it? Yes. It just wasn't being executed effectively even after 2 OC's, and commitment wasn't all there. Better to part ways with it than to do a halfway job of it. I think one of the biggest keys to a successful start for us was terminating our coach early in the season and hiring a new coach right then. It gave Helton a head start in evaluating the roster and make use of the transfer portal effectively.

But there's nothing like winning with it the way we did in '14. It had to be demoralizing for opponents to line up and just get their dick put in the dirt and not be able to do anything about it.

2014 was amazing. I honestly and truly thought bringing Doug Ruse back would duplicate it but it didn't. Something was missing. That version of the option did not use cut blocking did it?

Yes it did. I don't think any of the major rule changes came into effect until a few years later.

We cut the öööö out of them

I'm not an x and o's kind of guy, but I've watched it long enough to figure out some things. Like, we missed a lot of blocks in the CCL days so I'm thinking the OL coach wasn't that great. The TO is still a favorite of mine and I will watch it whenever I find somebody running it, but I'm definitely not one of those guys that want to run it for the sake of being different. I still think the TO can be good, just PJ's brand of it will be more difficult with rule changes. Not all TO uses cut block, but dang that thing worked like a charm.

I'm liking Jamey Chadwell's offense that runs some of it from the gun/pistol, but tend to be 50/50 run/pass. It's a fun offense to watch.

He had made some heavy modifications to accommodate their QB if I remember right. Not much different than the way PJ did for Tracy Ham. I think he would be perfect for us. That guy really knows the system inside and out. That's what we need. Jamey's is fun to watch, and so is Drew Cronic's. Both are option based, 50/50, but significantly different from one another. I've od'd on football these days. Seems like copy/paste *insert offense here*. Not much in the way of innovation.

I'm not sure the rule changes are as big of deal as they're made out to be. Maybe i've missed some important data point, but it seems like our changes in personnel (OL & QB) were faaar more impactful. Considering how successful other 3/o teams have been since then, I don't think they actually matter.
