Got it. Not necessary to practice actually catching a football.
Let me ask you, how many times do you go out and practice driving your car? Like just go out, set up some cones, and work on driving your car. I can guarantee that it is never. Why? Almost because driving your car has become so innate. How many times do you have to think about walking? Think about how you eat food? It’s innate. When you train for so long, it becomes innate, and you move onto more difficult techniques, in footballs case, stemming, releases, route running, etc.

I'm pretty sure @JJacket isn't striving to be the best driver there is so of course he wouldn't do that, but what do you think racecar drivers do? They practice driving their car.

Competitive eaters practice eating. You think you can eat faster than Joey Chestnut? Not a chance in hell, especially without practicing.

Exactly. WRs dont have weekly sometimes daily sessions with the Jugs* machine just to "keep their hands warm."

*No @JJacket, the Jugs machine isnt what you're thinking. Thats the "juggs" machine.

I like to watch competitive walkers training and competing.

Ok, but there is a point where it becomes second nature. And Joey literally doesn’t practice competitive eating lol, he just does it.

Tbf, I honestly couldn’t tell you the last time any receiver has used a jug machine besides punt return and deep balls without a punter or QB.

This is a typical wide receiver Indy period. Carrying, breaks (yes they are catching a ball, that’s not the focus of this drill), and blocking

What’s crazy is that this is absolutely proving my point. This is extra work done outside of practice. Not stuff done in practice…
You’ve moved the goalposts so far now that they’re not even on the field. Let’s declare this discussion a DUT, and move on

“If we're being honest, most of coaching for receivers is release and route running. Not even catching. That should just be innate.” -@me reply 336 on this very thread. But sure I’m moving the goalposts.

practice -
carry out or perform (a particular activity, method, or custom) habitually or regularly
I lift weights. When I’m doing squats, my focus is on flutes and quads. A SIDE effect of squats is core and back work. That’s not what I’m doing squats for. This drill is solely about breaking and getting out of breaks. It’s working on that plant foot and flipping your head. They’re just throwing the ball to work on focus after flipping. That’s it. It’s crazy how all these non football heads love to armchair coach and tell football players how their job is supposed to be run.
