So why aren't our TE's "relentlessly practicing" catching balls? They don't need a coach to tell them to do that. You're basically proving that these players lack work ethic in addition to being untalented.
Bullshit they don't need a coach on their ass about it. WWGOLD?

This has happened at GT before..... Carson tried it with GT Track HoFer "Bullett" Ben Vaughan, much to GT Track Coach Buddy Foulkes' chagrin..... unfortunately Ben had "Hands of Stone" and didn't record a single catch.... quit after our sixth game in 1969.... IOW, he made the trip to LA to play USC, then decided to concentrate on graduating.

There's an old saying, "Today's WRs who have incurable "dropsies" become tomorrow's DBs."
Track guys have a fear of getting hit

I think they tried it with Antonio McKay too; but I don't remember if he ever made the field.

It’s obvious some of y’all have never played the game before, or even watched a practice. Of course catching can be taught. There’s different ways to structure your hands depending on the type of pass, i.e. catch a ball high overhead, low to the ground, behind you, or a fade that drops into your grasp. Plus how to tuck it once it’s caught, how to maneuver your hands to the ball when a defender is in close, etc. There’s a lot of things to think about to catch a ball. It only seems “innate” because of the number of reps these guys put in to get it right.

Have you ever coached? Some guys just aren't coachable, and others simply don't have the reflexes or athleticism to be successful, and that is true for any sport not just football. You have to start with someone who has some innate ability. I think what we are figuring out here is that this is more complex than a single variable equation.

I could be mistaken, but was under the impression he was actually recruited for football, but obviously found a different, higher talent.

BTW, he's a very nice man. Shared a golf cart one afternoon at a Football Lettermen's Spring Golf outing. Yes, he can hit it a mile, right down the middle.

I mean yeah, but if you’re in D1 and don’t know how to catch, let’s just say you shouldn’t be there. Hell, that even goes for D2 and mostly D3. Most catching done in practices is just keeping their hands warm. Catching is taught in pee wee, Jr, and some high school.

So when I watched Calvin repetitively catching footballs that was just to keep his hands warm?

Per 2022 GT FB Press Guide, Antonio McKay lettered in 1983.

Iirc baybay talked in an interview about the coaches using tennis balls to teach them to catch with their hands instead of the body

Yes… that’s literally all that was for… same reason a QB is out there throwing on the sideline when the offense was about to go on the field.

He was just warming up. Catching is innate. Didn't need repetition

Amazing you have managed to get so full of öööö in your short life
Amazing I played football for 15 years and after freshman year, practice had never been about catching. It was always route running, explosiveness, stemming, releases, and separation. Every other football player I know, some playing power 5 and getting NFL looks, it’s the same exact thing. Catching during practice is solely to keep your hands warm. QBs throwing on the sidelines before game is to keep the arms warm.

Yea, we know about your football exploits and that since you played D3 you are the resident expert, despite the fact we have posters on the board who have played for GT.

Right bc plenty of football players don’t play pro after college… especially when two of my teammates at receiver are getting more pro looks than any of our receivers. Surely John Ross was a better receiver than Cooper Kupp solely bc he played at a higher level in college than high school. Surely I didn’t play for one of the winningest football teams of all time in college history. By the way, how far did you make it in your football career? Were the receivers still in 3 point stances?
Isn't that part of catching?
No, nobody goes out and practices solely catching during any periods in football.

Got it. Not necessary to practice actually catching a football.
