One More Year

there's no way we add years dude. no way. I don't care what his record is next year, he won't get added years
Then, there’s no point then in keeping him after ‘22. You only prolong having to *actually* do the greatest transition in the history of college football when kids portal jump on top of recruiting tanking to horrific depths because we’ve got a <3 year head coach under contract.

No one. No one can sell under those conditions.

Per the AJC’s 2019 article with his contract details:

“If he were to be fired within the first four years, Collins would receive 100 percent of the remaining value of the deal. After that, he would receive $2.4 million for each remaining season.”

Soo when after year four would the reduced buyout take effect?? Jan 1, 2023? Or the minute our season is over? Understanding this date is key; could potentially reduce buyout to $7.2M after next season.

Is what we have to endure before I think we can realistically get rid of Collins.

It’s not going to happen with him, if he can’t coach now he won’t be able to later. It was a fun idea, but it’s time to move on. He’s made more coaching mistakes in 1 game than CPJ in 1 season.

Let’s go get 3 more wins next year and then move on.
Yeah that’s the thing. Maybe he can keep up the recruiting charade for another year, but he has officially proven how awful of a coach he is, both during the week in preparation and during the game in managing all the situations a competent coach has to manage.

It is time to move on. If Collins believes in himself and wasn't bullshitting, he should do like Frost at Nebraska and "negotiate a new deal." That deal for me would be 1/2 salary reduction, reduced or no buyout, new coaches, and a one year deal. If he doesn't like that conversation, tell him we're done, get the hell out of here.

If you fire CGC, you need to fire the bonehead that keeps negotiating these long term contracts. I would pay a tad more at the front end for the ability to have a shorter term and make the coach prove himself to get a longer term agreement.
Well said.

Next coach won’t win either.

Tennessee is on coach 7
Florida is on coach 5
FSU is on coach 3

All those programs more likely to win than GT.

GT needs some donors to pay $$$ to 5-star recruits and their families like Georgia, Bama, Clemson and OSU. No hope for GT football in the current landscape unless that happens.

My guess, with no inside info, is staff changes at end of season, somebody will take the fall for the defense and maybe also the OL. CGC might take a cut as additional penance but wouldn’t bet on it. Then one more year with 6 win minimum to see year 5. He might get whacked even with 6 wins depending on other factors such as recruiting and how pissed off big donors are.

I remember writing very diplomatically on this board two years ago about how I would never in my business career have given someone like him a 7 year contract, just an unfair deal with GT taking 100% of the risk. A man who says GT is their dream job and is so confident of their success will take a 4-5 year contract. Everyone was in the enamored stage and I was hoping for the best as well.

I always wrote off my gut feeling to “well college sports is just different, good thing we have experts who know how to manage this.” Turns out a bad deal is bad in any setting. But college football is pretty rotten right now, schools are doing crazy things.

Then fire the AD Stans after the dolt negotiated this horrible deal. Not sure anyone was knocking down Collins door at Temple.
That is what amazes me. Collins was not a hot prospect. Why not three or four years with incentives and options?
Then we hired a group of assistants with limited experience and success. Key is the only assistant who would have been hired at any other P5 school. Choice and to a lesser extent Coleman have done a great job with limited experience. The other assistants have failed to perform at this level.

Tennessee is on coach 5 and Florida on coach 3. But the point still stands

Clean house on the coordinators. Make Key the OC and get an OL coach who we pay like an OL coach.Key can name 2 new assistants. Whoever he wants to keep or cut. If he flops at OC, so be it. It will put him in or out of a future HC pool.

Cut the DC and find a new one. The new one can bring along 2 guys. Let the new DC cut whichever 2 guys he thinks isn’t cutting it.

Keep Collins two more years until the buyout is manageable or we are winning.

I could live with that.

We won’t do that unless he’s winning.
Didn’t we go through this merry go round with Gregory?

Otherwise, ‘23 becomes a count down clock each game until we can fire his ass and the program enters a death spiral it will struggle to recover.
