Post NCsu game thread

Tech is now 5-0 at Bobby Dodd Stadium this year! To be 7-4, going into the Georgia game, is actually impressive considering how banged up we are. Our players gutted out a victory tonight that they could have easily lost. Our offensive game plan for this game almost got us beat. Coach Key should have realized, in the first half, HK was too injured to be effective. AF proved tonight, if given the opportunity, he is more than capable of leading our offense.

GO JACKETS!

Observations from Bobby Dodd:

#12 is a heck of a QB

This team found a way to win. That’s what good teams do.

That damn noise blaring what is supposed to be music will make me think twice about going back to a game. Awful. I miss the good ole’ days of the band.
it is loud and im in upper north. .. i would like to be able to chat with people during timeouts and such. not easy to do.

however, overall atmosphere was great.

What game were you watching? Our defense gave up 400 yards and 29 points to a below average team. I call that a regression from the Miami game where we gave up 400 yards and 23 points to a Heisman front-runner.
We gave up 7 points by the end of the 3rd quarter
Had 2 INTs one for a TD and forced 3 3and outs.
You are ridiculous

Don't take the bait. No team had finished the season yet. (Although maybe FSU has, LOL.)
But some teams are guaranteed a winning season already, so the claim falls flat on its lame face

Forgot to mention, after we threw a pick when we were about to score, the D got another INT to let us score a TD
But you say the D was bad and imply they were somehow at fault
D won this game, offense was inconsistent and scored their first TD in the 4th quarter

The defense against the run and containment was horrendous. I did see quite a bit of holding by the Wolfpack OL so that had a little to do with it. Our tackling was very suspect though. I think Philo may have the best arm of any QB that has played here. He has plenty of zip and puts the ball in great position on his deep passes. Our receivers are going to have to perform better when we play the Dogs next Friday or it will be a long game. Special props to Birr. To say I've been somewhat critical would be an understatement, but he seems to have figured out what was causing his inaccuracies. A W is a W period.

The real problem with the PA is the differential in volume between the regular announcements, etc, and the volume of the music, which is so jarring when it kicks in. Also way too much high end/treble in the music mix. Whoever is running PA sound is an absolutely terrible audio engineer.

That's at least partly because the offense couldn't stay on the field long enough

your tv didn’t pick up the last second boomerang to the right?
So before the kicker kicked it, he did something that I doubt those in attendence noticed - he dropped a strand from a pom pom and it literally blew sideways (to his right). So he kicked the ball biased to the left to let the wind pick it up and straighten it. Mysteriously, the ball went left straight as an arrow - the wind must have stopped or something. The kicker kicked it perfectly - had the wind not changed, I'm absolutely certain he would have made it.

The wind was gusty. I'm sure that contributed not only to the missed FG but also to some of the drops.

We did have some bad drops, the TE one where we would have had a 1st and 10 and already in FG range, that cost us at least 3pts. Then the tip drop on the goal line that turned into an INT, that's at least 3pts.

On the other hand we made some great catches too, Singletary in particular. One down the right sideline and one near the left sideline down by the goalline. Both great catches with really good coverage.

Our TRUE FRESHMAN QB, made some great throws, and was looking better as the game went on, I thought. An off-season of weight training and practice will improve Philos ability to run and his management of the offense. His arm is fire and he put the ball on the money and on time. As they say, he hits those windows!

Also, the line having to adjust to 2 different QBs calling the snaps is not that easy. You get into a rhythm with a QB and the line on snaps with their unique cadence, and it affects their ability to blast out of their stances when that is missing. I think that affected our run game, but it can get better with practice.

All in all, we are a youngish team with a youngish coach facing some adversarial injuries, and a "trap game" type situation between a top10 opponent and our arch rival. We stepped up when we needed, Philo ran a great 2min, the playcalling was good, and then the D held them short of good FG range.

And we WON!

The PHILOsopher KING offense lives!

I wouldn't blame the wind when at least three balls from Philo hit receivers in both hands, directly in front of their face mask, and were not caught.

Maybe his throws have too much zip on them, or maybe the receivers let Philo down big time. But that was not the wind.

A late gust of wind can cause exactly that
And I said contributed to, not caused so saying I blamed the wind is inaccurate

Thought this same thing, especially since they showed it on the broadcast for both kicks.

First time he did it, I think it was a replay, I said to myself "oh come on, seriously? he's over-thinking it, there's no way that actually helps him, not like the wind is consistently that"

Second time, after the timeout, they showed him doing it again live before the kick, I said to him "you're a fairy and a loser, look at you, you think you're so cool, but you suck and you're gonna miss this kick you ööööing piece of overcompensating to the left stupid moron, boo, ahhhhhh"

Turns out we were both right.
