Some Comments

I would think that Chris Hatcher would be a strong candidate as well. A proven HC that has been successful everywhere he has been although at a lower level. Strong recruiting ties in Georgia and southeast region. A young coach that would look at GT as his big break.

Do you think we would roll the dice on him?

I went to VSU for a few years just when he got there and he was God in that town (and I hear he has a complex, often referring to himself in 3rd person). Remember though, he was under the tutelage of Hal Mumme, who later went to KY and failed miserabley w/ his air raid offense. I'm not sure how the "hatch attack" offense is doing in Ga. So. but I hear he is winning. Also, a lot of his success at VSU was do to Dusty Bonner who transferred down a division...but he can develop QBs.

I'd love to hire the guy, he went to my HS as well.

UVA has had a lot more talent than GT over that time though. I know that recruiting is part of a coach's job, but UVA is legendary for how much they've underachieved under Groh.

Im a GSU student, and here is how I see things.

A - He definitely does, I have heard it on our radio show
B - Its doing great. We are on top of the conference in offense, and in the conference championship race. If we win Saturday, we are guaranteed a share of the conference title. Not bad for a team coming off of a 3 win season.
C - Alot of his success here is due to Jayson Foster. The jury is still out on him. We will see what happens next year at GSU (if GT doesnt get him). Then Ill be sold on whether or not he is a good coach.

They've got an excellent shot at underachieving all the way to Jax and beyond this year.

Hatcher is not using the Hatch Attack at GSU. They went to a run option offense because that was what the personnel dictated. They are ranked 6th in Total Offense, 1st in Rushing Offense, and 109th in Passing. After going 3-8 last year, GSU is currently 7-2 with its only 2 losses coming in overtime and are in good position to win their conference. They beat Appalachian State.

Hatcher is just a great coach and will very likely be D-IA HC somewhere in the next 2-4 years. He turned down the La. Tech HC job last year. If we could have Hatcher and Smith on the same staff that would be a whole lot of recruiting clout in the state.

Substitute GT for UVA and Gailey for Groh and that is what everyone outside our little world thinks of us.

UVA 2007 is like GT 2006.

But what are the chances? Im assuming there is no question that he would accept the position if it were offered. But what are the chances that he would even get an interview?

My take is that in order to get a great coach (in our situation anyways), you have to snatch him up before he has been realized by the football factories...reference Spurrier at Duke...Meyer wherever he was before Utah, etc...and to do that you have to be willing to roll the dice and have a keen eye for rising talent.

IMO if Hatcher expresses an interest, he will definitely get interviewed. I would guess that he would be somewhere between 4-6 on our wishlist of realistic candidates which probably gives him a 1 in 5 to 1 in 8 shot. I still think Jimbo Fisher will be the guy due to his relationship with D-Rad unless he gets offered Nebraska, A&M, or Clemson.

Based on my experience, many people still put Georgia Tech on the same level as a Northwestern or Wake Forest. I remember Auburn fans all talking about how the game in 2005 was going to be over by the second half.

Anyway, the recruiting rankings between GT and UVA haven't even been close. I also think UVA has had many more NFL players under Groh. And even GT last year didn't get all this luck in every single win. UVA will definitely get theirs against VPI.

i seriously hope that if there is a coaching search they atleast interview hatcher. as others have said he has been a possition coach for a bcs school or two and he has done nothing but win everywhere he has been as head coach. i feel this guy is going to be a major player in bigtime college football sometime soon. he is doing pretty well at gsu this year running a scheme somewhat diff. than what he prefers, due to his tallent being geared more towards an option offense. a big plus for me is that in everything i have read about him seems to indicate he makes sure to include fan perception and approval into his coaching. i also hear he knows how to score alot of points and does pretty well coaching qb's.
You hear he scores a lot of points? Hell, look at his scores this year and at Valdosta St.! Hell yes he knows how to score, knows every single High school coach in the south and they know him, has energy, knows how to get the fan base re-involved. FSU interviewed him this past year- thank god they didnt take him. I want him as well. He would be an outstanding choice for us at GT.

I've seen the low budget commercials he's starred in down here in Savannah...in regards to his role as GSU head coach. I must say, they're pretty good and effective.

Hiring a D2 coach scares me but it could pay off. I would think he'd be worth the interview but interviews don't mean everything (see Jim Mora Jr.).

cool, I have suspected this and think it would be a wise decison. Turner Gill and Norm Chow are the only two choices there IMO.

Chow? Wrong minority, if he is one. If Paul Hewitt was AD, he'd hire Gill before Chow in a heartbeat.

I hope this makes sense so here goes.......

Was talking to a great Tech fan and friend the other day one on one and it grew to about 6 or so.

What we believe and hear me out is. All the coaches in college right now knows what's going on at other places. They have ears all over the place. I think as others is that these coaches know that Tech has had the talent to play better than we have the last couple of years.

I believe they see that Chan is old style NFL, controlling of the offense and as conservative as they get therefore they don't see firing a 7 or 8 win coach as a concern for them to look at Tech.

They are probably thinking as I would if I were a coach, man what could I have done with that program if I were there.

Now, have I confused you guys enough?

PS: One last thing

finsh 3-1 with loss to nad lickers and go to a bowl Chan's gone
finish 3-1 and bowl loss Chan's gone
finish 4-0 Chan stays with major ultimatums.

If I understand you correctly...yes, I'd bet there is someone out there who would welcome the challenge of coaching at Tech. And knowing that they are a hair's width away from making a big name for themselves. Our recruiting coordinator is proving that it's not impossible to get "very good to great talent" here. Add to that very good coaching and that spells success.

Chris Hatcher press conference from GSU hiring in January: link

Just watched a bit (it's like 10 mins long) but he seems charismatic/ambitious... don't know if he'd want an OC job a year after taking the GSU job, but he'd jump at a HC interview, i'm sure.

Roll the dice! Winning is winning, I don't care where it is...its all relative to the talent on the field. He has turned GSU around in 1-year! And as was mentioned...he could recruit the state of GA.

Also...the only way we will ever find the next "great coach" is too pick a diamond out of the rough cuz we're never going to bring in a PROVEN winner from the BCS.

I'm probably just dreaming though...that would be a ballsy hire, but one that I would support. Young and fresh...just like Richt was.
