Tashard Choice Gone

Recruiting doesnt mean S*** if you cant coach, CPJ coached lesser ranked recruits up, EVERY SINGLE YEAR. Did that translate into winning seasons, No, However Intelligent Coaching maximizes recruits performance on game day. Our current coach does not seem to have the pedigree to coach em up, hopefully the new position coaches can though.

I think we are marginally better at identifying contributing talent. I think the staff is heavily reliant on camps and stars so we get a lot of well reviewed recruits who in the right hands would be great but we lack the coaching to fully unlock their potential.

I think whether we are better at identifying contributing talent is a question to be answered this season. So far it is struggling to materialize. We are marginally better at getting guys the recruiting services favor, that's about all we know.

Not sure why this is in the Tashard Choice thread. His position group performed best on the team, and it wasn’t particularly close.

His position group sucked. They scored zero points in the last 2-1/2 games. He’s a clown.

You act like Collins is pulling in top 20 classes. Who has he recruited that has been above and beyond what any other coach would have done? Why are you so enamored with his recruiting ability? His biggest splash swam away.
If my post reads as being enamored then it's sending the wrong message. I'm simply acknowledging that he's a salesman and pulled in more highly rated classes than what we've traditionally had. Is that not true? If we had good coaching, I believe it would translate to results on the field and he'd likely be able to continue the recruiting momentum rather than regressing like we are now (and losing some of them as you said).

Honestly, I would have loved to have someone with Collins sales and marketing ability during CPJ's tenure. I think his strengths were the missing piece to CPJ competing for national championships here. We needed something to counter the constant negative things being said about the offense by media and opponents. CPJ obviously had little patience for them and just got annoyed. We needed a strong PR campaign like we have now.

Sure, we’re recruiting better, but who gives a öööö? Literally the only reason recruiting matters is if it helps you win more games. If I could choose between:

1) Poor recruiting, but mediocre performance with some excellent years sprinkled in

or

2) Good recruiting, but pathetic performance

I know what I’m choosing every time. Of course I’d like to have better players, but honestly I don’t care how many 5* players we sign or how many guys we put in the NFL. If they win games and represent GT well, I’m happy. If not, nobody is.
I think we argue on here constantly because we believe we have to choose between options 1 and 2, neither of which are what we really want. I'd like to think those aren't the only two choices and we can achieve more by fixing our deficiencies.

Tech will never be able to recruit with the big boys. Our SAT requirements, lack of national TV exposure, and lack of winning reputation mean that, if we try to play the game the same way as uga, we will lose.

To win at Tech, you have to play a different game. That means either a gimmick offense (TO, air raid, etc), a coach that can outsmart opponents on X’s and O’s, or crazy moneyball like analytics that leads to advantage.

Edit: to clarify I think you can get to 6 wins, maybe even 8 wins in the ACC playing the same game as everyone else. But to get to the top, to beat uga regularly, to play for a top 15 ranking, we have to do something different.

I have concluded that Monken is our only hope. We have to go back to the option.

Hell, PJ would have won 4 this year.

I think Air Raid is a better fit for us. Think Leach would move? If not, what about we pick from his coaching tree? Maybe Art Briles?

I don’t believe we have to choose between them either. I believe that a competent AD would have supported CPJ both financially and in terms of marketing to help offset our recruiting deficiencies. I also believe that there are other coaches out there with unique styles (including option-based football) who CAN recruit.

You're missing the point. Paul took Chan Gailey talent and won 9 and then an ACC title the next year. His game day coaching was worth 3-4 wins a year. The trend at the end was that we were just getting physically whooped in 4-5 games every year. You can attribute it to recruiting, player development, lack of support. Doesn't matter. When people talk about the talent deficiency, we're talking about the fact that we saw us as having a 3-4 win roster that Paul was maxing out to stay mediocre and we saw the trend in the wrong direction. Hell, when was the last time we had someone in the combine? I remember having multiple players in the combine and drafted each year, it's rare for us now and the trend is in the wrong direction. Todd made a gamble that a top notch recruiter could flip the roster, but turns out he's terrible at getting players to execute scheme to the point that his recruiting is negated entirely. I think the team quit on the coaching staff this past year. From when I watched replays, I could tell that we were physically getting pushed around less than even in 2016. We are a much more attractive roster physically, but damn if our young talent isn't rough around the edges and there's very little cohesion to execute as a team. It reminds me of Paul Hewitt teams inbound the ball. I think we need to get rid of the coach. I don't think there should be an either or situation, though, and I want us to have the standards and expectations that we have talented players in the program because even the best game day coach out can only win when the talent gap is close.

All that to say, we should all give a öööö because unless the transfer portal, which didn't exist in the context of a free transfer when Collins was hired, complete decimates our roster this was always the plan. High upside if he turned out to be a good coach, but worst case scenario you fire him after 4 and the job is more attractive for the next coach. Unfortunately, we didn't anticipate the portal changes, NIL, and Collins is even worse than anyone really imagined so it's really ööööing painful. Let Todd dig his own grave in his stubbornness to stay the course and we'll move on unless a miracle happens, but at least we'll be in a better position to attract a new coach.

Not to be the biggest CPJ defender, but in 11 seasons, CPJ won 2 ACC Championships, went to 9 bowl games, and won 4+ games 10 times. He finished 2014 ranked #7.

Comparatively, CGC in 3 seasons has won 0 ACC Championships, went to 0 bowl games, and win 4+ games 0 times. His team has never been ranked.

I would say that CPJ translated his team into winning seasons.

Not intending to defend Gef because he’s shown he lacks the ability to be a fry cook, but CPJ got a solid assist from Gailey on roster. The roster Gailey left behind was pretty damned good and a whole lot better than what CPJ left for Gef.

But I’m not sure that would have mattered anyways. I’m convinced now that Gef could take Alabama’s roster and make it lose.

This is so out of context. The recruiting is much better. Than it’s been with any other coach in recent memory. That 48th class would be significantly better if transfers were counted in the rankings. Quantity was biggest issue with that class.
Didcha miss the ,86 for CGC and .84 for CPJ recruiting factoid?
