UVA Postmortem

How do you not have a trick play ready when it's too far for a Hail Mary Pass.
Why not a Hook and Ladder, Rugby backward laterals play, Flea Flicker. Anything but a straight dropback into the pocket pass that hasn't worked all night. UVA's three man rush flushed him out with ease.
We could barely run a regular play in the second half. What makes you think we could possibly pull off a trick play?

No good explanation for the poor attendance. We had every reason to be positive coming into that game. I cannot imagine what it’s like to be a player and walk out of the tunnel. Some of those guys probably saw crowds almost as big as that in high school. Georgia Tech seems to be admitting too many students that are not very well rounded and have absolutely no interest in supporting their team or athletics. That’s too bad.

J Blatt has a hard job. However; a few smart hires and a couple years, he could be fine. Getting talent isn't the issue. The use of that talent has been, for years. It take one good coaching staff. Which means he needs to hire a HC with the right ideals and abilities to put his plan into fruition.

It’s Thursday night in a big city with crappy traffic. Also, most people make their decision on whether to buy tickets to a game well ahead of time. The outlook on our season was bleak so no one bought tickets to this game. If this game was on a Saturday, attendance might have been better than Duke but Thursday night games are tough regardless of who we play.

I'm on the record about Key already but it's nothing against him at all. Its that if Cabrera is being honest, and we want to build a top 20 program, and he's ready to invest what's needed to do that, then you just don't hire Brent Key. You hire someone with a track record as a head coach, period. Think of it this way -- no matter who we get we're paying a minimum of $4MM because that puts us in the middle of the pack in power 5. IF we're serious about football what's the difference between $4MM and $8MM, when you have a FAR higher level of confidence in the $8MM guy and he raises the program to a new level? It pays for itself.

Here's the other thing - say what you want about the OL, and we'll all agree that the OL has underperformed. But this isn't Key's team. It's Collins' team still. It was Collins' offseason. Key was thrown into the fire in Week 5 of the season, and honestly our team looked different for the first two games. I'd bet that they'll look different again in a couple more games to close out the season. We all know last night was an abortion. Do you think any coach thrown into this situation would have done much better over the last 3 games?

And I know this board is known for its assholery and belligerence, but just remember Collins is the villain and outsider here. Key is an alum, and one helluva guard when he played here, and he loves Georgia Tech every bit as one of us if not more.

time to bring out the 4star frosh Pyron and give him a chance!
That's who I meant last night, not Peery. I can't believe we didn't see another QB besides Gibson. And nothing against Gibson, it's not his fault that he was apparently the best available alternative.

the traffic was a damn nightmare. its a 45 minute drive from my house to SC parking deck under normal conditions. been making the drive 20 years. last night was an 1 hour 45 minute drive.

the last couple of weekend games were brutal too with all the stupid construction on I75.

there were a lot of regulars in our section not there.

So, I have to go back and look, was the OL so bad because uVA was sending the house every play, or were they just overwhelmed by a 4-man rush? Also, was it just the alcohol or did we try to throw deep over and over and ööööing over again? Gibson started to look like he was about to get into some sort of rhythm on the 2nd to last drive when the throws were short to intermediate, but I don't remember a whole lot of that before then (again, I wasn't going to watch that sort of thing sober).

It's hard not to be angry, but it's a little tempered by the fact that this wasn't exactly unexpected. Win a couple of unexpected games when no one is watching, get some momentum, get some eyes on you, lay an egg seems to be standard operating procedure.

Even if Key is a great coach, he's not a miracle worker. He wasn't going to completely change things in a few weeks. But it's sad that we lost to a team we really should've beaten.

Agree with pretty much all this. I like Key, but it was tough to see him getting this job unless he just did something extraordinary. Maybe if TStan has avoided the axe, but you don't make a splashy AD hire and make all these promises only to hire a Tech man who is already on staff to some team friendly deal. That's the old, cheap GT athletics Cabrera is promising to get away from.

For as much as some of you want to blame X,Y and Z, the reality is this……

1. There is a talent issue on offense.
2. The OL is the worst unit in the ACC. And that’s saying something considering how much UVA lost.
3. Play calling can only do so much when you don’t have the right pieces in place.
4. GT was fortunate to beat Pitt and Duke.

GT’s error margin due to 1-3 is extremely slim. So if the offense is struggling, it doesn’t matter how good the defense plays. GT is on the level of Iowa on offense at the moment. This is not the fault of Chip Long or Jim Cheney. Poor talent evaluation on the recruiting trail are on full display.

Whoever is the next HC needs to take a page out of the Brett Bielema and Sam Pittman book on how to rebuild a program quickly. It’s all about getting the LOS fixed. The rest will fall into place. Look at the job they both have done at Illinois and Arkansas, but especially Illinois. In 2 years Bielema has Illinois on the verge of going to the B1G championship.

Luckily with the transfer portal, things can quickly be fixed these days.

As it relates to support, as pointed out by numerous hosts on ESPNU College Sports channel (including Roddy, Wes, Luginbill, etc) we’ll see how true Cabrera is to his word on investing in football and the other sports programs. The school has the $$$, it’s time re-allocate it to build Top 30 programs. But as they’ve all pointed out, GT isn’t spending $5-7 million a year on a coach. GT is more in the $4 million range. Which is why many think it’s 50/50 on Key getting the FT job at this point.

There were plenty of 4 man rushes that got to the QB.

It's especially sad because we managed to beat a team that we really shouldn't have (ranked Pitt on the road 5 days after HC switch) and then a solid Duke team in a matchup that was a toss up at best. Then we couldn't take care of a team we should have handled easily. Tough way to be let down.

GT should have handled UVA “easily” based on what? They had a chance to beat undefeated Syracuse and beat an ODU team that has beaten VT and throttled 6-0 Coastal Carolina.

They were 2-4, 0-3 on the road IIRC, and have looked bad. (They needed a miracle to beat ODU.) They weren’t in last place for no reason. We were lightly favored in the game and seemed to have turned a corner. Maybe not “easily,” but this was absolutely a game we should have won (and probably would have with a healthy Sims, who was very tentative even before going out).
