UVA Postmortem

The offense wasn’t exactly effective while Sims was in there. We put up 3 points. 3…
I get your point but he drove us right down to the goal line and Carter missed a TD catch that ended up an int. That should've been 7 or 3 at minimum. He threw a dime to Leo when he got mauled and no PI was called. He had another good throw to someone on the sideline for a 1st down that was droped, Carter maybe that time again also. He moved around in the pocket well, stayed composed and found the open man most times. After he hurt his ankle/foot you could see him hobbling and couldn't set his feet to throw, hence the overthrow to Jenkins that sailed on him.

Sims threw the ball way late allowing the DB to come over from the other side of the field for the INT. By the time Sims threw it there was bascially triple coverage and with Sims telegraphing where he was going with the ball, it was not hard for Vag to intercept that pass. Definitely not on Carter there.

It's one of the consistent weaknesses Sims has. Bad footwork, poor reads, late throws when he makes the read and throws behind receivers. If it wasn't for that, he'd be up for Heisman because he's got the physical talent to be a very good QB. Weinke has not helped him. Given Weinke's tenure at UT, I think the handwriting's on the wall for him.

I am serious. The only time Bobby Dodd has ever been full is when we play Clemson or Georgia and half the stands are occupied by their fans. It was like that when Paul Johnson was here and we were winning big.

tech used to consistently sell 40k and sell out homecoming and parents weekend. Now sells 30k. That’a $500k/game Tech is losing. Upper North doesn’t sit as many as it looks.

Based on the fact that while Georgia Tech played perhaps the worst many of us have ever seen us play on offense they won 16-9.
And that’s a fair point. That said, it’s not like GT‘s offense has lit up the scoreboard this year either. In fact, GT is last in the ACC in PPG at 16.1. 2nd to last in yards per game at 314 (only ahead of BC).

UVA is 10th in yards per game (364.4) and 13th in points per game (17.6).

So it’s easy to say UVA fans could have been feeling the same way heading into the game.

It's way worse than that I'm afraid. You take lost PSLs, parking, concessions, merchandise, etc and we're probably losing closer to $7M per season and could be higher. There's boxes completely empty, unsold with dozens of seats. They're a lot more expensive than $50/ticket. It's obviously a much better atmosphere when the stands are full, but the economic reality is the 1k high net worth fans that have abandoned the program in the last 3 years are having a massive impact on our finances. We need the other 9k also because it's what makes Bobby Dodd special, particularly at night, but we're so cash strapped right now Batt's in quite a pickle.

Which is why I would like to see our new coach get incentive pay for any attendence over 40k fans. Gross revenue %

Attendance is not just a GT issue. Look around the country. UCLA for example is #9 in the country and averaging less than 30,000 a game at the Rose Bowl. USC has seen an uptick under Lincoln Riley, but is still under 70k a game.

Attendance overall has been on the decline over the last decade in large part due to TV availability. And I can attest that I’m one of the fans who used to love going to games, but would rather watch from home now on multiple TV’s, etc. In fact, the last game I went to was the 2016 ND @ USC game when I was still living out there. I just realized the last GT game I attended was the 2011 WCU game.

The SEC, B1G and B12 don’t seem to feel the impact as much as the P12 and ACC. It could also be in part due to teams being located in major cities (LA, Atlanta, Miami, Boston, Pittsburgh) but something needs to be done to get fans back in the stands in those 2 leagues especially.

Wrong. Sims first target was Leonard. He was covered. #2 target was Carter running the backline. That route isnt open until late which is when Sims threw it. DB made good play and may have got a hand in but Carter had hands on it too. If it wasnt tipped, the other guy had no chance at the int. Wasnt into triple or even double coverage.

If you try to buy tickets from GT for Miami this morning you either believe the ticket office has some funny shenanigans going on or that ticket sales at GT are robust. They showed 75 total seats available in lower West and a whopping four seats available in lower East, with four more in the corner. Most upper sections on the sidelines show only a few scattered tickets available. So, all is well. We almost sellout for every game. Of course, the secondary ticket market is flush with seats.

When UCLA announced their intentions to jump to the Big, I read where they are in a similar boat, debt-wise, to GT.

I relied on my live game recollection so I rewatched it. Leonard had triple coverage, Sims stared at Carter. When he looked at Carter coverage was corner behind Carter chasing him and LB in front. Throw was open over LB for a TD. Fairly easy throw there. Jenkins was wide open running across the middle but Sims was locked in on Carter, Va LB assumed Sims was going to Jenkins so moved to right. Sims threw the ball behind Carter, almost directly at Va's corner. The deflection went to other DB who read Sims and dropped his man- that part out of screen shot. The route was open way early, an easy read particularly for a 3rd year starter. It's the part of Sims' lack of development that is troublesome.

100% correct. The $$$ from the B1G was the deciding factor to leave. The P12 had no chance of getting anything close to the B1G whether USC & UCLA remained in the P12. The move will get the AA out of debt and allow for UCLA to spend on the football program (which Chip Kelly has been vocal about).

You would have seen this coming if anyone had actually watched the Pitt or Duke game…..should have lost both imo
Don’t agree with this assessment. Against Pitt and Duke we were able to run the ball and get pressure on the QB. We did neither against UVA and I can’t explain why. Possibly because it became obvious early we were not going to use Sims as a runner unless the play broke down and we had no other option.

We couldn't run Sims. Sims is our best runner. Hall and Smith are OK backs. We have no power back on the team.

29,362 announced attendance. That’s gotta be the lowest in 40 years.

Fireworks after the game? Cancelled. Good idea, since everybody said “öööö this” and left, but kinda funny.

The number of times a GT team has had an opportunity to take a step to the next level from their current situation and utterly failed is astonishing. Admittedly, this time we were looking to step up out of the cellar. But favored at home against the worst team in the league on Thursday night national TV? And you don’t even get off the damn bus? Embarrassing. Way to squander every single bit of goodwill built up in the last 2 games.

4 turnovers (including a pick 6). Blocked punt. Tipped FG. Missed FG by UVA. Held them to 14% on third down. When the defense plays like that, it’s almost inconceivable that you could lose the game. But damn if we didn’t almost roll another offensive shutout at home. To the worst team in the league.

The crowd, such as it was, wanted to be fired up. The pick in the end zone and the mixed XP took the crowd out of it immediately. The criminally haphazard officiating tried to get the crowd riled back up, but it didn’t stick.

Knock off the stupid Buzz skits. They’re terrible and embarrassing.

I’ve literally never seen a QB play as bad as Gibson. Not that he had a lot of help from the line or the playcalling or the receivers or the officials, but he looked lost, shell shocked, and utterly out of his depth. Against the worst team in the league. Running out of bounds on that wet fart of a final play was maybe the second worst thing I’ve ever seen on a football field. I almost felt bad for the kid as he slumped off the field to the tunnel in defeat, but it’s astonishing that this is the best backup we have, and we’ve utterly failed to prepare him for the lowest grade of ACC football possible. FSU might murder him, and U[sic]GA will actually feed him his jock strap.

This was just another Collins-type loss. Back to life, back to reality. We’re bad.

Sadly, I think it's pretty clear that Vagina is NOT "the worst team in the league."

In 2018, folks said the cubbard was bare. From what I see . . . this offense doesn't even HAVE a cubbard!!!

I've never been a big Sims fan, but he is sooooooooooo much better than anything else we have on that side of the ball.. If we were getting Sims-level play out of the offensive line, the receivers, the backs . . . we wouldn't have lost to Vagina or UCF and we'd be 5-2.

That was my point. Even Sims couldn’t overcome the poor play of our offense (line, backs, receivers, and even Sims at times)

How do you not have a trick play ready when it's too far for a Hail Mary Pass.
Why not a Hook and Ladder, Rugby backward laterals play, Flea Flicker. Anything but a straight dropback into the pocket pass that hasn't worked all night. UVA's three man rush flushed him out with ease.
We scored 3 points over 59.5 minutes, nothing was going to occur to score a TD.
