UVA Postmortem

Oh, and hat's off to OP for the thread title: Postmortem is the perfect term.

At least this makes J’s decision easy. No way he keeps Key after that display.
Laying an egg at this point doesn't help. A bye week, a national stage, at home? And you're unprepared for a game you should win? Sorry. Not good enuff.

29K. Weve been bleeding fans for 10 years; our tried and true supporters are dying and our young fanbase is almost non existent.

Rebuilding a fan base that is engaged with the program will be the biggest challenge for GT football in the next 20 years. It will decide the future of our program.

The previous two admins didn’t care about fans at all, and it hurt dearly. Our decisions were solely based on trying to get quick money, and trying to impress 18 yo players. Batt and the next coach have their work cut out for them.

Our CB (a good player whose name escapes me right now) making a diving over the shoulder interception against UT on 4th down 50 yards downfield with no receiver near that cost us enough field position where UT kicks the tying FG in '85.

This game was amazing.I didn't see the game but saw the stats.uva had 2 ints, 2 fumbles, TEN penalties, a blocked punt and several dropped passes and still beat us easily at HOME with 4 extra days. SAD ,really sad.
Clear out the the coaches and start over-- so 4 yrs is a target for a bowl probably.

I would not say they beat us easily. Both teams tried pretty hard to give it away and ultimately our offense ended up doing the better job.

No good explanation for the poor attendance

Student attendance hasn’t been that bad, all things considered.

Outside of South Carolina, what are the programs (in or near a major city with lots to do) that pack the stands after 4 years of 3 win seasons and seeing new lows and lots of blowouts ?

I’m actually still a season ticket holder and go to the games, but I get the low attendance. Maybe the new attitude from Cabrera will help turn the program around and of course winning will help attendance.

It’s Thursday night in a big city with crappy traffic. Also, most people make their decision on whether to buy tickets to a game well ahead of time. The outlook on our season was bleak so no one bought tickets to this game. If this game was on a Saturday, attendance might have been better than Duke but Thursday night games are tough regardless of who we play.
Thursday night games are not tough for FSU. They’re not even tougher Virginia Tech or NCST. Virginia Tech asells out Thursday nights.

Go to a NCST or Virginia Tech game. Those are sucky programs that have no problem with attendance.

Neither of those teams have 4 straight seasons of 3 wins. Show me a program that has been that poor on the field with good attendance.

Lol. You serious? NC State has had eight winning seasons in the past ten years. VT makes a bowl almost every season. Not even remotely comparable.

I am serious. The only time Bobby Dodd has ever been full is when we play Clemson or Georgia and half the stands are occupied by their fans. It was like that when Paul Johnson was here and we were winning big.

GT should have handled UVA “easily” based on what? They had a chance to beat undefeated Syracuse and beat an ODU team that has beaten VT and throttled 6-0 Coastal Carolina.

Based on the fact that while Georgia Tech played perhaps the worst many of us have ever seen us play on offense they won 16-9.

Punching the VT QB (Tyrod?) for a drive extending penalty.
Reggie throwing the ball away on 4th down.
Getting stripped from behind late in the game against TN in 2017.

Add Bill Curry running wide on 4th and 1 at Wake in ‘86 with a bowl bid on the line and Mover anchoring the interior offensive line.

29,362 announced attendance. That’s gotta be the lowest in 40 years.

Fireworks after the game? Cancelled. Good idea, since everybody said “öööö this” and left, but kinda funny.

The number of times a GT team has had an opportunity to take a step to the next level from their current situation and utterly failed is astonishing. Admittedly, this time we were looking to step up out of the cellar. But favored at home against the worst team in the league on Thursday night national TV? And you don’t even get off the damn bus? Embarrassing. Way to squander every single bit of goodwill built up in the last 2 games.

4 turnovers (including a pick 6). Blocked punt. Tipped FG. Missed FG by UVA. Held them to 14% on third down. When the defense plays like that, it’s almost inconceivable that you could lose the game. But damn if we didn’t almost roll another offensive shutout at home. To the worst team in the league.

The crowd, such as it was, wanted to be fired up. The pick in the end zone and the mixed XP took the crowd out of it immediately. The criminally haphazard officiating tried to get the crowd riled back up, but it didn’t stick.

Knock off the stupid Buzz skits. They’re terrible and embarrassing.

I’ve literally never seen a QB play as bad as Gibson. Not that he had a lot of help from the line or the playcalling or the receivers or the officials, but he looked lost, shell shocked, and utterly out of his depth. Against the worst team in the league. Running out of bounds on that wet fart of a final play was maybe the second worst thing I’ve ever seen on a football field. I almost felt bad for the kid as he slumped off the field to the tunnel in defeat, but it’s astonishing that this is the best backup we have, and we’ve utterly failed to prepare him for the lowest grade of ACC football possible. FSU might murder him, and U[sic]GA will actually feed him his jock strap.

This was just another Collins-type loss. Back to life, back to reality. We’re bad.

We don’t know how competent the Qb is and maybe never will with the incompetence of the Online. He, and perhaps rightly so, is scared to death and has no confidence knowing he’s about to get sacked, each time, in record time.

I'm on the record about Key already but it's nothing against him at all. Its that if Cabrera is being honest, and we want to build a top 20 program, and he's ready to invest what's needed to do that, then you just don't hire Brent Key. You hire someone with a track record as a head coach, period. Think of it this way -- no matter who we get we're paying a minimum of $4MM because that puts us in the middle of the pack in power 5. IF we're serious about football what's the difference between $4MM and $8MM, when you have a FAR higher level of confidence in the $8MM guy and he raises the program to a new level? It pays for itself.

Here's the other thing - say what you want about the OL, and we'll all agree that the OL has underperformed. But this isn't Key's team. It's Collins' team still. It was Collins' offseason. Key was thrown into the fire in Week 5 of the season, and honestly our team looked different for the first two games. I'd bet that they'll look different again in a couple more games to close out the season. We all know last night was an abortion. Do you think any coach thrown into this situation would have done much better over the last 3 games?

And I know this board is known for its assholery and belligerence, but just remember Collins is the villain and outsider here. Key is an alum, and one helluva guard when he played here, and he loves Georgia Tech every bit as one of us if not more.
Who has been the chief recruiter of the oline since Collins started now in this fourth season? Idk for certain but I’d bet key has some responsibility in this debacle of an oline. Pitiful

I'm rooting for Coach Key, but Thursday night was a bad outing. While it's tough to put too much blame on a backup QB, Gibson gave me no confidence that he could get Tech back in the game. Was there no other backup available?

That said, I do think the kid has gotten too much national attention for that last play. As bad as he played, he's still a kid tossed into a tough situation.

About the only time Curry ever failed to run up the middle!

He said he'd have an easier time here than Bama. We just haven't seen it yet. Or maybe Collins didn't let him do it?

I figured between Free Shoes, Cavman and Vippie Sue we'd be 2-1 in those games. Key needs to pull off an upset in Tally now to keep himself in the HC hunt otherwise he needs to update his resume.

When UVA would punt instead of going for it on 4th down, I told dad that UVA just knows that we absolutely couldn't sustain a drive and score a TD. It was going to take a big play.
