UVA Postmortem

They were 2-4, 0-3 on the road IIRC, and have looked bad. (They needed a miracle to beat ODU.) They weren’t in last place for no reason. We were lightly favored in the game and seemed to have turned a corner. Maybe not “easily,” but this was absolutely a game we should have won (and probably would have with a healthy Sims, who was very tentative even before going out).

And GT barely hung on to beat Pitt and Duke. Both could have easily ended up in losses. If you think there is truly that much of a difference between GT, UVA, VT and Duke in the Coastal at the moment you’re only fooling yourself. You can add BC and Louisville into that group as bottom tier at the moment. The 4 Coastal programs are in a state of transition. BC and Louisville are just not meeting expectations this year.

Fact are facts at the moment. GT has a talent issue on offense.

That's fair. I guess as a fan though, when you beat two one loss teams in more difficult circumstances, you go into a game against a 2-4 team at home expecting to win and really establish the fact that you are a pretty good team. Clearly the facts ended up not bearing that out though, unfortunately.

You would have seen this coming if anyone had actually watched the Pitt or Duke game…..should have lost both imo
I’ll give you Pitt but that duke game was controlled the entire time outside of two dumb special teams plays and some horrendous ref calls on the last drive. Regardless hope we get some decent names to pull from in the coach search.

What in the world could be worse than that play?

You haven't been a Tech fan long if you cannot come up with at least a dozen that bad. My favorite is Reggie Ball running out the back of the end zone for a safety against VT when he was rolling out to pass. We lost the momentum and the game on that play. Thomas dropping the 4th down pass against uga in '09 comes to mind. Adrian Rucker fumbling against uga in '76 when we were driving for the win in the 4th quarter. Collins calling the time out against Citadel. Our CB (a good player whose name escapes me right now) making a diving over the shoulder interception against UT on 4th down 50 yards downfield with no receiver near that cost us enough field position where UT kicks the tying FG in '85. Orwin Smith stepping out of the end zone on a kick return then backing into the endzone and kneeling down for a safety against Miami that turned that game around. Need more? Of course the absolutely unexpected phenomenal plays (blocked FG return in '15 against FSU for instance ) more than make up the difference and keep us coming back for more.

No Joe Burns running out of bounds instead of falling down costing us a game back when or is my old mind playing tricks again?

Pretty frustrating that we finally get a defense and our offense goes back to Collins era year 1 futility. It was hinted at by several people that we would be in trouble if Sims missed any time this year. The offense simply won't move unless he plays and plays well. I am not really mad at Key, but at the same time, seeing him as the savior or obvious answer was way premature. The most likely outcome was always a brand new regime next year.
You realize the defense was playing one of the worst offenses in the league right?

To say "we finally have a defense" is a pretty big stretch.

Punching the VT QB (Tyrod?) for a drive extending penalty.
Reggie throwing the ball away on 4th down.
Getting stripped from behind late in the game against TN in 2017.

How do you not have a trick play ready when it's too far for a Hail Mary Pass.
Why not a Hook and Ladder, Rugby backward laterals play, Flea Flicker. Anything but a straight dropback into the pocket pass that hasn't worked all night. UVA's three man rush flushed him out with ease.
We should've had time for 2 more plays. A deep out, either incomplete or getting 15 yds.... or at least a spoke. Then 45 seconds to call the final play. Instead Gibdumb took 9 seconds to execute a play knowing the clock was running out. We had 22 seconds when the RB went down. That's an eternity or a moment depending on your QB.

I'm on the record about Key already but it's nothing against him at all. Its that if Cabrera is being honest, and we want to build a top 20 program, and he's ready to invest what's needed to do that, then you just don't hire Brent Key. You hire someone with a track record as a head coach, period. Think of it this way -- no matter who we get we're paying a minimum of $4MM because that puts us in the middle of the pack in power 5. IF we're serious about football what's the difference between $4MM and $8MM, when you have a FAR higher level of confidence in the $8MM guy and he raises the program to a new level? It pays for itself.

Here's the other thing - say what you want about the OL, and we'll all agree that the OL has underperformed. But this isn't Key's team. It's Collins' team still. It was Collins' offseason. Key was thrown into the fire in Week 5 of the season, and honestly our team looked different for the first two games. I'd bet that they'll look different again in a couple more games to close out the season. We all know last night was an abortion. Do you think any coach thrown into this situation would have done much better over the last 3 games?

And I know this board is known for its assholery and belligerence, but just remember Collins is the villain and outsider here. Key is an alum, and one helluva guard when he played here, and he loves Georgia Tech every bit as one of us if not more.
A couple thoughts:
- Key implemented a couple quick fixes that got us thru 2 games. UVA had 4 extra days to scout them and attack the weaknesses.
- Key focused on schemes the players felt comfortable executing, it seemed like we tried to tendency break on offense and we went back to looking slow and tentative. To your point, this is Collins' team still.
- The RB coach exodus derailed the OL coaching plan and they suffered. We need another coach ASAP just to implement gameplan with them. Key is being stretched too thin. Still, most of the sacks were on the QBs holding the ball too long and there were times our QB had a really clean pocket. The run blocking was.... maybe the worst I've ever seen.

I was optimistic (shame on me) that the extra time would help Key implement more than bandaid type fixes. It sure looks like he tried and it backfired.

That was against Md, forget the year, maybe 00 or 01.

This seemed really evident on punt protection. It felt about as bad as the first four games and we got lucky it didn't have more of an impact.

I read an article where the special teams coach essentially predicted this might happen, because as you said they just implemented as quick of a fix as possible and don't have a lot of options for if the opponent counters. All of that stuff is normally implemented in the offseason.

We were executing it better towards the end. Sadly that was necessary practice. We obviously focused on coverage in the bye week and let the wrong guy go early a couple of times.

OL played poorly, but the backup QB was terrible. When the ball came out of his hands on a three count, the offense moved.

None of plays compare IMO because they were not intentional to end the game. This was f*** it, let's take the L and go home.

And rolled up over 400 yards of offense. Only thing keeping it from being a rout was their turnovers, dropped passes, and missed FG’s.

What was the worst thing?
29K. Weve been bleeding fans for 10 years; our tried and true supporters are dying and our young fanbase is almost non existent.

Rebuilding a fan base that is engaged with the program will be the biggest challenge for GT football in the next 20 years. It will decide the future of our program.

The previous admin didn’t care about fans at all, and it hurt dearly. Our decisions were solely based on trying to get quick money, and trying to impress 18 yo players. Batt and the next coach have their work cut out for them.
