"We're just now catching up to where everybody else is "

What I don't get is we had been spending roughly 800k/yr on recruiting...yet one guy (along with our coaching staff) were the only ones doing the spending? This just adds several more people/former players & coaches to the equation. I wonder if our 800k mark will increase a lot due to the new hires.

Imo, you couldn't be further off base. We already know about the Tuitt's of the world. Those are the guys that coach Johnson is personally calling. Having another 2-3 guys in the recruiting office isn't going to do a lick of good recruiting them.

Where this will help the most is logistics and freeing up coach time to do higher level recruiting things. In other words, we will have more time to focus on the guys further down our list.

Specifically, what is critical is that these guys (i) can handle the pure logistics side, such as gathering and checking transcripts and checking entrance requirements, etc. and (ii) conduct basic reviews of video/film/etc.

We won't see a benefit in the four and five star guys that we would already be pursuing, like Tuitt (i.e. 4-5 star guys in our backyard). We may see additional solid players outside the southeast that we otherwise may not have spotted.

Where I'd expect the real benefit, however, is getting better 3 star talent. In other words, maybe out coaching staff wouldn't have sufficient time to scour the game tape of DEs 5-20 in the state of Georgia. Those guys all may get approximately the same ranking by the scouting services. Having a deeper staff will allow us to more readily filter through those guys, and hopefully spot diamonds in the rough.

I heard JoeHam was good with moms though. I mean, I'm not sayin'. I'm just sayin'.

IMO, hiring Mike Bobinksi was a exceptionally smart hire.

Why? Because no "football experience" means no preconceived notions.

IMO, that means LOTS of new & unconventional ideas will be considered and undertaken, which is EXACTLY what the program needs.

I'll offer PAC12 Director Larry Scott as a text-book example of how someone with
"no football experience" can be a "game-changer." The result of his lack of football experience lead him to essentially "revolutionize" an ENTIRE D1 conference.

So, IMO, hiring Bobinkski will be a definitive "game-changer" for GT.

I was never really concerned about this hire...now I am.

Add a team from the MWC and poach Colorado while failing to close the deal on any of the 4 main targets: Revolution!

He has been asking for more office personnel for a couple years.
If this statement is true, then CPJ knows the rules and is willing to break them (not that that is the issue, but I would prefer not to have another ACC Championship fiasco, I digress). The NCAA clearly mandates who can/can't recruit as well as how many office personnel each school is allowed to have.

This rule has been changed in the past year because of the rampant violations occurring at the factories. Take Oregon for example, they are about to get into major trouble for using a group of recruiting services (as do most factories).

Now, anyone anywhere is allowed to recruit, whether they are on the school's payroll or not, on behalf of a school as long as no impermissible benefits are presented to the Athlete-Student.

I think somebody else mentioned that they couldn't believe we were down personnel 1 to 5 or something like that.

This couldn't be further from the truth. We have had as much personnel as we can possibly have under NCAA rules up until the rules changed this past year. Now, if other schools are cheating and hiring more personnel, we would be unable to do so as we have been on probation for pretty much all of CPJs tenure. This rule will change that.

This will help recruiting, no doubt. It should help us WAY more than other schools as well.

Be sure to take note of.......
(From BusinessWeek/Bloomberg News)

"...negotiated the largest television rights package in college football history, $3 billion over 12 years; and begun the process of building a seven-channel television network. In so doing, Scott has emerged as the pivotal player driving an unprecedented geographic and financial transformation of college athletics..."

And THAT...was without his other B12 targets.

Not bad for someone who before becoming Pac-10 Director in only 2009, had ZERO football or D1 conference experience of ANY kind.

The ACC's deal is worth 3.6 billion. Just sayin'.

From keeping tabs on recruiting this year, it seems to me we are casting a much bigger net than previously. Not just geographically, but quantity of early offers per available scholly.

Like I said earlier, this approach takes more man hours.

The PAC12's $3.6 Billion TV contract is for 12 Years with only 12 teams.

Not bad for only....."adding a team from the MWC and poaching Colorado while failing to close the deal on any of the 4 main targets..."

The ACC's $3.60 Billion TV contract is for 15 years with 14 teams.

You'll need to check the math to see which was the better deal.

Just Sayin.

BTW, the point of this started with my belief that GT made a great hire with Bobinski for the same reasons Larry Scott has proven to be a great hire for the PAC12.

Both had zero D1 football experience.

We have a lot more scholarships to give this year, might be why we are offering more. Also what you are saying is likely a factor as well.

That also ignores the fact the Pac12 revenue model is different than every other conference out there.

FWIW, here's how my comment on this topic began:

The point was NOT the bombshell deal Larry Scott signed for the PAC12.
(IMO, the PAC12 got a much better deal than the ACC got)

THE POINT....was I was applauding GT for hiring Bobinksi, and that Larry Scott,
like Mike Bobinksi had ZERO D1 football experience to his role as PAC12 Director.

It was when TIA wanted to debate the value of the PAC12 $3.6 Billion contract vs ACC $3.6 Billion contract that diverted the comments away from my original point which was......that IMO, GT's decision to hire Bobinski is great and will be looked back upon as a positive game-changer for GT, much like how the PAC12 has reaped huge benefits from hiring a guy, with no D1 football experience.

Eh...Larry Scott is the beneficiary of dealing during the height of the college football money bubble.

The analogy here is you're turning every realtor that sold a house during the mid-2000s housing boom as the next Donald Trump or real estate mogul.
