We've been here before

My post on this from the Hive:

Many of the non-alum GT fans say the same things about uga fans, it's not just the Tech graduates that do it. A recent stingtalk poll found 1/3 of the Tech fans were non-alums (with more than 100 responses) and you can't tell them from alums as far as trash-talking goes. It is what it is.

As far as I am concerned, it's more about a pathetic fanbase that tolerates and rationalizes a university giving a sham education to these 'special-qualifier' athletes that get arrested regularly and show lack of a university-learning in general. As long as they tolerate and rationalize that, they are beneath us.

uga's failings in academics is another issue, the joke majors, being ranked behind TAMU and Ohio State and all. uga is only 1 spot better than Clemson in public university rankings and only a few spots ahead of Auburn and Alabama. That's just sad for being one of the two flagship universities of Georgia that is the economic and cultural center of the South.

well said,Cat
that is at THE core of the difference AND why we don't play even with them in football- its SIMPLE as far as I see

You can't, because this attitude (intellectual elitism and arrogance) is deeply ingrained in most of the alumni and administration, myself included. Most don't want to change it. Personally, I'm glad we don't have enough sidewalk fans to fill a 90k stadium like U[sic]GA.

As for the Larry Munson tribute, I think that is pretty standard. It's just going to be a pregame thing, before player introductions even. Times have changed and you have to do that now. Even Alabama fired the guy running stadium music for playing "Take the Money and Run" and "Son of a Preacher Man" during Cam's warmups, and that's supposed to the most nasty rivalry in football.
Have no problem honoring Munson,in the years he talked about us I heard nothing bad at all.Now it will be nice however if we are ahead twenty one to zip at the half etc but hell,I still remember the ninety team and Munson telling it like it was and...........the Ga fans gave him hell for telling the truth.

Well since I have no degree from tech, but I do have one,I think its poor to say my education is better than yours and you just beat me 51 to 7.We win degree war everytime now its time to win on the field.

The original poster is incorrect. Win and they will come is the right answer. I live in Albany, Ga and saw several people at the gym wearing Tech clothes for the first time. I walked up to one young guy and asked if when he graduated. His response I did not I just like them better and UGA is not that good this year.

Once again realize the answer we beat UGA regularly and the fans will come to Tech. Will we ever have the pool UGA does...no but can we can have a bigger pool of fans.

PJ is the right guy and we will get there. I get upset when I hear some knock our coach when we had a down period this year. I believe the OP was one of these. Lets don't repeat history....again. Every coach who has his own mind Ross and Oleary was not liked by certain alumni. They leave because of this. We need a coach who is tough and required discipline. It is part of the Tech culture if you are an athlete or not. Some make it many do not because they do not have the discipline to make it. Yes it is arrogant but only a person who made it through Tech can truly undersand how hard it really is.

Ross left for the NFL and O'Leary for Notre Dame. It had nothing to do with alumni hurting their feelings, it had everything to do with having better opportunities.

I always find it amusing when people say our fans are going to turn coaches off. Our fans are FAR milder than those you get at other schools. Even the cynical internet tough guys.

I don't get why people keep pointing to the Tech grad that's the head of Walmart whenever we use Walmart jokes on UGA. Being the CEO of the world's biggest corporation is not the same thing as being a cashier at Walmart.

he works for walmart HA HA

Or shopping at Walmart on a routine basis. Or showing up on People of Walmart.

Being the largest employer of Georgie fans is actually a public service to the United States of America. But for Walmart, our prisons and welfare rolls would overfloweth.

Jeebus, the level of snobbery has actually managed to raise itself to an even higher level - now not only people who WORK at WalMart are beneath us, but also anyone who SHOPS there! :turbonoes: :rotfl:

Crap. I shop there. So am I beneath myself or above myself. Dangit.

LOL, well I was careful to say "on a routine basis".

You know, like this lady:

I did not graduate from Georgia Tech but I sure do put up with the bull öööö from mutt fans and have been for probably longer than most of your ages on here. I think all we want from you Tech grads is to be accepted as Georgia Tech faithful. We did not go to Tech but we sure as heck support the school. Not just football but other sports programs as well. I commend all of you Tech grads and current Tech students for the work you are doing and have done to get a degree from GT. Most side walk fans are true Yellow Jacket fans. Be kind to them. Now lets just kick some leg-humper ass Saturday.

Alums, non-alums, staff, fans, students...WE ALL GO TO GEORGIA TECH.

I love some of these quotes from U[sic]GA fans on Facebook.

At Walmart, terrified. I have the personality of these people. These people are insane and very angry.

Walmart is CRAZY!! I love all the madness over cheap towels and vacuums!

You Will Suffer Humiliation When The Sports Team From My Area Defeats The Sports Team From Your Area

As you can see from the calendar, the game is coming up this weekend. I'm sure you are as excited for it as I am, as our cities are rivals and have been for quite some time. Your confidence in your team is high, but rest assured, you will suffer humiliation when the sports team from my area defeats the sports team from your area.

On numerous occasions, you have expressed the conviction that your area's sports team will be victorious. I must admit that every time I hear you make this proclamation, I react with both laughter and disbelief. "Ha!" I say to myself with laughter. "What?!" I say to myself in disbelief. How could you believe that your sports team could beat my sports team? It is clear that yours is inferior in every way.

When the sporting contest begins, the players on your team will be treated as though they are inconsequential. It will be remarkably easy for my team to accumulate more points than yours. There are many reasons for this, starting with the inferior physical attributes of the players representing your area. Strength, speed, and agility are just three of the qualities that the players on the team from your area lack. The players representing my area, on the other hand, have these traits in abundance.

I would not be a bit surprised if the individuals on the team from your area were sexually attracted to members of their own gender. That is how ineffective they are on the field of battle.

Underscoring your team's inferiority is its choice of colors. It is ludicrous to believe that your team's colors inspire either respect or fear. Instead, they appear to have been chosen by someone who is colorblind or, perhaps, bereft of sight altogether. The colors for my team, on the other hand, are aesthetically pleasing when placed in proximity to one another. They are a superior color combination in every way.

While we are on the subject of aesthetics, let us compare the respective facilities in which our teams play. While my team's edifice is blessed with architectural splendor and the most modern of amenities, yours is a thoroughly unpleasant place in which to watch a sporting contest. I know of what I speak, for I once attended a game between our respective teams in your facility. Let's just say the experience left me wishing that my car was inoperable that day due to mechanical problems, rendering it impossible for me to get to your area to attend the game.

If you need another reason why the sporting franchise representing my area is superior, look no further than the supporters for the two sides. Not only are the supporters of the team from my region more spirited, but they are also more intelligent and of finer breeding than you and the rest of your ilk. In addition, the female supporters of the team from my area possess more attractive countenances and figures than yours. Some of the women from my side that I have observed could make a living by posing for pictures for major men's magazines. The women who cheer for your team, I'm afraid, are far too unattractive to do so.

One of the more pathetic aspects of the team from your area is the fact that only people in your immediate area possess an affinity for it. By means of contrast, the team from my area inspires loyalty and affection in individuals who live in many other geographic locations.

To illustrate this point, let me tell a brief story: Recently, I was on vacation in an area of the country far away from my own, and I saw many individuals wearing items of clothing that bore the insignia of my team. I approached one such individual and asked him if he originated from my area. He said no, explaining that he simply liked the team from my area and had for many years. Interestingly enough, during this trip, I saw no clothing or other paraphernalia bearing the insignia of your team.

Do you still doubt that the team from your area is inferior to the one from mine? Just look at our teams' respective histories. In the past, we have defeated you on any number of occasions. Granted, there were times when your team beat my team, but those were lucky flukes.

The day of the game will soon be at hand. And no matter how hard you pray to a higher power or how many foam accoutrements you wear in support of the team from your area, your team will be defeated. We will win and you will lose. This is your fate.

Prepare for humiliation. It shall be upon you at the designated hour.

Why is that always a alums first question to someone you see rocking GT gear? Why not just ask, "Whats the good word?" or say Go jackets, or did you see the game?

I almost always have a GT hat on and it never fails, a GT grad sees my hat and ask, "So. when did you graduate ?". its ööööing annoying, please stop.

Sorry, I didn't mean to do that, but I think all these things are intertwined. Why would you have higher admission standards than the NCAA requires if you don't consider yourself intellectually superior to other schools and want to flaunt it? We're purposely putting ourselves on an unlevel playing field.

I just think the elitism is so core to our school's and fanbase's identity that it factors into almost everything we do, and I don't think that will ever change.

+1

I went to Clemson, and I still identify with everything that Tech is, including the higher standards and "different breed" of athletes and alumni. We pride ourselves on being different from UGA and the moment we start accepting guys with 700 SAT's majoring in flower planting, that difference is gone.

Georgia Tech is what Georgia Tech is, and I'm damn proud to be associated with it. I do wish people would tone down the elitism sometimes, but changing the culture ain't gonna happen, and I'm glad.
