Jackets in the draft

I wonder sometimes if some of our guys would work harder to get to the league if they didn't have a worthwhile degree to fall back on. Some of these guys that got drafted had to either make it to the league or..... Most of our guys should have a pretty respectable career even if they never play on Sunday.

The incentive to get to the league is pretty high. The minimum salary of an NFL player is going to be many multiples higher than your average engineer or business major. There degree will still be there after you retire from the league.

Okay seriously, I am not *trying* to get a bunch of big cry replies, but I have to say the NFL draft the past few years is our dead canary in the coal mine. Our talent level is seriously below par and trending downward.

I would tend to agree with you. I would think it has to kill us on the recruiting trail.....just not when you're recruiting against Sister Mary's College of the Poor

The talent gap is real people. Johnson’s system can too easily be negatively recruited. Couple that with conditions that put Tech at a recruiting disadvantage anyway and you’ve found the recipe for 2/3 losing seasons...not sure what we do, but there clearly is a problem, which should cover step 1 of the program.

We have either got to recruit better or our coaching/player development needs to be flawless; preferably both. Its been pointed out a bunch of times that Gailey's typical classes were about the same as Johnson's but he did seem to get the occasional blue chip. He also had the NFL background and contacts that I think got more 3 stars drafted, but it didn't translate to more wins on Saturdays. No easy answers, but I hope we are on the right track. Our next class should give us a lot of information.

Three Stripe Life will get our guys looks moving forward. Adiboost in talent.

No doubt; but if your only option is the NFL your motivation may be different. We've had guys leave early to take jobs or go to grad school, I doubt those guys were making the extra effort to try and get to the league.

You're kidding yourself if you think >25% of the players take school seriously. Unless things have changed since I was at school and *very* close to the GTAA, football players were there to play football and school was just an annoying requirement. Yes, our academic floor is much higher than other FBS schools, but still these guys just wanted to ball and nearly everyone of them thought they had a shot in the NFL, no matter how unrealistic their chances.

Interesting take. Our RS Senior class has two of the worst years Since the BL disaster. A talent gap would explain that.

But they also have the best record against UGa since the peak OLeary years. They have two of the best seasons post BL.

Part of the talent gap is the offense. It is hard to recruit OL and QB with NFL measurables in this system. Toss in that the ABs have almost zero chance at the nfl due to size, and your pool of draft prospects drops a good bit.

I think you make a good point about the QB and AB's; but the last few years we've upsized the OL and had OL guys make the transition to the league.

There is no rule that says we have to recruit undersized players. We could run this system just as well, and more than likely better with players who have NFL measurables.

We don’t recruit shorties because that’s what the system calls for, we recruit shorties because that is who is willing to play in the system once the factories pass them over.

Yeah, it seems we could at least be getting outstanding B-back talent.

We've all been through the QB argument enough times.

Mason didn’t have nfl measurables. Devine did. Our OL is small entering college and small leaving college. Part of that is dictated by the offense. I’d bet Gailey and OLeary put more OL into the league.
