Are cracks developing in Geoff’s plan?

So, we had 12 commits this time last year. One 4 star and three high 3 stars. The rest a mix of low to mid three stars and a couple diamonds in the rough.

This year, we have 8 commits. One 4 star (BlackStrain) and three high 3 stars (Rutherford, Robinson, Collins are a 5.7 on rivals) . Additionally, 2 mid 3's and a couple diamond in the rough candidates.

Last year, there were complaints were that we just had quantity but the quality wasn't really going up. This year, the complaint is that the quality is fine, but we don't have the quantity?

Debbies gonna down, I guess.

So, last year at this time we had:
12 commits
1 - 4*
3 - High 3*

This year we have:
8 commits
1 - 4*
3 - High 3*

I don't see anything to get excited or alarmed about in either direction.

Currently tied for 6th in the ACC and the next 2 commitments should move up to 4th place, trailing only Clemson, UNC and Miami.

Disappointing? Yeah. New World Order now.

We're getting there. I have faith we'll get back to where we were in 2007.

I meant recruiting-wise. That class won a lot of games for us.

Imagine if we had continued on that track....
Gailey probably got run off a year too early after that 2007 class plus Calvin in 2006 *but* his offense was just too plain-Jane NFL which was his doom since he never had the required NFL talent at QB. The Fridge was the perfect coach for the college game where he could match his offense to the strengths of his talent rather than force the square peg like Gailey.

Or 2 years too late.

Gailey's NFL offense was so boring that Grant Field went crazy when CPJ brought in the option. Those who think the 3-O was boring must not have been around when we were running a pro-style offense. Even with Calvin Johnson and T. Choice, the pro-style offense was a sleep fest.

I've been told here we don't criticize former coaches in recruiting threads.

Besides, Gailey is the only GT coach in the modern game to never have a losing season, despite sabotage by the Hill, massive injuries some seasons including being down to the 6th string tailback, etc. People who criticize his offense forget he gave the best recruits each year to the defense, but some people would rather be excited than win and go to bowls.

We'll never know what he could do on offense in college, since as soon as he shook away from the Dave Braine We Can't Win So Go After Rough Gems directive on recruiting and implemented the Geoff Collins We Can Compete With Anyone Anywhere model, he was fired before he could use the new toys he was collecting.

The fact he had Pat Nix calling plays should've been a fireable offense

Haha, talk about time/distance making the heart grow fonder. We were lucky to give so much talent to PJ to actually have some memorable seasons in that time frame.

...

I have heard variations of this argument depending on who the coach was at the time. X coach gave the best recruits to the offense, Y coach gave the best recruits to the defense. Calvin Johnson was the best recruit we had during the Gailey years, and he did not play safety. We had very good defensive lines under Gailey; but it isn't like those guys could have just switched to OL and been just as good. Typically the very good recruits ended up playing where they were recruited to play regardless of who was head coach. Hopefully CGC will recruit top players for both sides of the ball.

Obviously, we are talking about 2-way players. They stayed on offense under CPJ and stayed on defense under CCG. Stretch was primarily recruited as a TE by others but we had him at DE. Many other examples.

Defense wins championships, they say.
