It’s War 2.0

If true, Jim Phillips should be hiring a band of lawyers to go after Disney, right? I mean you seem to believe there is some form of a smoking gun proving that Disney is doing something to “actively diminish the conference’s standing” vs the other conference’s.

Honest question. Do you think the ACC could get another TV partner to pay what Disney is paying (which also includes taking over the ACCN)? I’d say yes, if they could have kept FSU from doing everything to leave.
Yes. I find inherent problems in a system where espn is involved in every aspect of college football. They are the go-to media outlet for sports info. Then they influence attention, rankings, recruiting, etc through their media coverage AND marketing of games under their control. Then they are interested in the bowl game matchups because they own significant interests in those bowls and have tv for them. And the fact that it was years ago that espn decided that the sec was its horse and the ACC was going to be a loss leader is a huge problem.

They also developed FPI. The go to ranking system for the committee.

I started watching Fox big noon kickoff instead of game day that'll show em

OK. I agree with some of this, but not all. The ACC has 5 programs (BC, Syracuse, Pitt, VT, UVA) in foot prints with less talent to recruit from vs any program in the South (regardless of conference). The state of Virginia produces a fair amount of D1A prospect, but not to the extent of Georgia, Florida, etc. Add in 2 programs (Wake, Duke) who historically aren’t very good with small fanbases. That’s half the league alone with geographic or fanbase disadvantages. Of those 7 mentioned, VT is the only one who continually sells out. If you’re a 4-5* player from the SE, are you picking BC, Syracuse, Pitt, Wake, Duke or a school in SE or B1G with a huge fanbase and winning tradition?

Recruiting has more to do with weather the past 20 years vs anything else. That’s not an ESPN influenced issue. Look at Michigan, PSU. While they have recruited well, it’s not at the level of Bama, etc.

Like you’re saying ESPN does for the sec in football, is the same complaint many have as it relates to the ACC in hoops. Do you agree? Overhyping teams based on hoops name preseason vs anything else. Duke, UNC get ranked high regardless annually.

Blue blood ACC programs? How about NONE of them. A new league does not need ANY of the current ACC members, including Clemson and FSU. Hell, if I were a voting member of the SEC/BIG10 blue bloods, I'd invite Miami first and at least get a major city. Tallahassee is a ööööhole. Clemson is not even on par with Tallahassee as a city.

It will be an NFL model. Tallahassee adds nothing. Clemson adds nothing.

I agree. ACC Blue Blood programs are blue bloods in basketball, which means little in all this. These young guys don't remember when FSU and SFU were confused by most college football fans. I can remember when FSU was lower profile than SFU is now. Undefeated blue blood programs don't get bounced from the CFP by a couple of one loss teams, even due to injury.

The UNC crowd seems to have some stroke (why I don't know). They may get UNC an invite.

There must be a lot of animosity toward SMU amongst the college football powers. I wonder if some of that animosity has spilled over onto the ACC and is part of the reason FSU got bounced.

G5 additions to P5 conference not a sure bet to get P5 money from CFP committee. Starting now by the way so Houston, BYU, Cincy, UCF you’re all cool.

The ACC tried to game the system (to keep FSU happy), let SMU pay a massive amount to cover media payouts so that other ACC teams get a bump from their inclusion and don’t share it with SMU for years. Why should any other P5/P4 conference be required to share a piece of their pie with SMU?

The ACC made an offer to a willing participant who accepted.

We have to be amongst the dumbest. Not only did we leave the sec, we then named our stadium after the guy who did it AND THEN turned our nose up at an opportunity to join the B1G. Our AA is historically as well managed as KMart.
You got any links we were offered to join the Big 10?

The conversations were initiated but we showed no real interest apparently. I think we are a much better fit than Rutgers in a lot of ways and would’ve been packaged with MD if we wanted it. Maybe even some other ACC schools.

My mind is always blown by any Bobby Dodd hate on a Tech message board. Dodd wanted the other SEC schools to commit to the 120 rule, that would limit each school to 120 football scholarships, and discourage running off scholarship players that did not pan out on the field leaving those individuals without a chance to get a degree. The vote did not go our way, so we left. NOW, EVERYONE HAS 85 FOOTBALL SCHOLARSHIPS.
Do I wish Tech had not left the SEC? Sure, but it was a decision based on principal, and ahead of it's time.

Well, he certainly showed college football, didn't he? If you don't do what I say, I'm gonna torpedo an entire football program.

So the correct thing to do if you don't get your way is to quit and leave? Dodd lost a vote and his lack of character dragged us down to where we are now. Shame on Dodd and his ego.

So we lost a vote and Dodd threw a tantrum without considering the impact that decision would have. Good use of principal.

Why likely? Why do any of the schools in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, or Louisiana have any will or need to bring in FSU?
Money. If ESPN approached P2 and offered more money to them to add FSU, the member schools would be told how they are voting. I could also see the P2 pulling a ACC/SMU deal on FSU/clems and making them take a reduced payout if they want in.

Don't forget TCU, which is basically the same school in the same market that was a G5 addition and commands P5 money

Same? TCU's program is far above SMU. Bad comparison. SMU is a lot of money and a lot of bad football.

Because of the NCAA. SMU got the death penalty in the 1980's while the NCAA looked the other way for UGAg. Had the roles been reversed, and UGAg gotten the death penalty, they would be in the same dire straits that SMU is.

You can't honestly believe that. There is no universe in which a large public flagship university in one of the top 4 recruiting rich states in the country wouldn't recover.

If SMU wanted to recover quickly or had the ability, in over THIRTY years, they could have. But I suspect the death penalty from 1988 is the hill you're going to die on so there's nothing more to really debate.
