Paying above market so that we ‘look’ serious about football is stupid. Pay a candidate what they are worth.
Key is looking at somewhere in the range on 500k-1M as an OL/assistant HC. He might have some interest as a HC at a non-P5 school. But he isn’t going to be paid over 1M.
A 1.5M ‘prove it’ contract is better than the non-P5 route. You get more exposure and resources at Tech.
Get some wins and renegotiate in two years. Worst case, you banked 1-2M over what you would have made as an OL coach.
There are a few of P5 openings out there, Key is being considered for only 1 of those jobs. If we want to drop 4 million a year, there are plenty of better resumes to sort through.
