This reminds me of the confusion I faced navigating my way around Greece. From my perspective, spelling was a mere suggestion and everything was phonetic; however, they didn't always have agreement on the proper pronunciation. Then, the English name would be different from the Greek name so sometimes you'd be really hosed. English signs were ubiquitous in the tourist areas, but once I got outside of that area all bets were off.
