I agree that the OC wasn’t the major problem but he is a problem. Smith got 1 carry, 1. What more does he need to do to get on the field. He is dynamic and will play in the NFL. And our running plays are just generic blocking schemes and involves the RB getting the ball so far behind the line that he has to be Houdini just to get positive yardage. And ultimately the OC is graded by his QB and so far in 2 plus seasons we’ve seen nothing from the QB position. This is the same guy who picked Lucas Johnson to start the new era of GT football.

And you are actually agreeing with me that the game plan was not solid but may not realize it. At best, Pnope was trying to prep for future games with an offense that doesn't fit our roster.

No but this is what OCs do. Taquon Marshall threw 18 passes against Alcorn State in 2018. Twelve passes in the first half. Do you think we needed to pass there? Or was Johnson trying to get Taquon some game reps?

I felt like our playcalling put our players in a chance to win last night. Far from perfect, but good enough. We missed multiple easy TD passes early that could have blown the game open or at least not put us in a position to have to come from behind. I’m not sure what else you want the OC to do if the QB is missing wide open guys, other than put in the backup (who did better).

CGC, on the other hand, looked like he was in over his head. Wasted timeouts, lack of preparation, no confidence in his own decisions… it was not a good look. He’s really coming across like a guy that should be a recruiting coordinator who stays out of the way of actual football.

The OC isn’t just playcalling. People roasted CPJ hear for saying the plays were open. If you have open players and can’t get them the ball, you are failing as a coach in practice. Pat tries too hard for balance and he tries too hard to be surprising.

I thought the OL did pretty well. It looked like niu was sending 6 a lot. They were counting on the front 4 to hold the line and sent the OLBs to atop the outside runs. That is why we were getting good yardage running inside. Why we kept running that slow developing jet sweep, I don’t know.

I am too tarded to understand that sort of thing. I'm not saying you're wrong. Just makes more sense to me to check the important parts of the machine before you start doing the fancy stuff. That's probably why I don't coach anything.

Just for perspective, Taquon threw his first pass on our 3rd possession after we were already up 7-0. The next possession was all runs and we went up 14-0. Alcorn State's longest driive to that point was 5 plays for 13 yards.

We run laterally A LOT. I feel like Gibbs and McGowan ran about 10 yards laterally for every vertical yard they gained. It's frustrating to watch plays develop that slowly.
 
In warmups last night I noticed how slow we were getting the ball to receivers on sit down routes. After the receiver turns and stops the ball should get there in a half second, second tops. That almost never happened - it was much more common for the ball to arrive in two to three seconds. Then they shifted to slants. Receivers reaching back to make the catch was the norm. Bottom line is we made it to the first game with QB’s who are just not great passers and are not in sync with the receivers. The game starts and we throw behind, throw early, throw out of bounds, throw short, and throw late on routes. At the start of year three we simply have an awful passing game.

Gibbs is good when he’s got a nice hole and he can take on the LBs and secondary 1 on 1. To neutralize Gibbs you plug up the line and make him fight off the DL. It’s why a 2 back set would be preferable. Mason would break thru and they’d have to overcommit there, leaving Gibbs a chance of springing free. We’re not doing anything with our much ballyhooed TEs, might as well trade them out for a second RB. It’s extra pass protection we need on passing plays anyway, assuming our RBs still get taught blocking.

They are healthy young men and the campus isn't as devoid of the ladies as it once one. I generally assume under such conditions they've been balleyhooed, unless they have some kind of religious thing going on.

Well we are doing one thing with our TE’s. We are pulling them and letting the lb’s read where the ball is headed.
