Genuine Question

You're absolutely right. Georgia Tech Head Coach Geoff Collins needs time and he will bring this program to the glory days of Bobby Dodd. This talk of the guy before Coach Collins should cease. A rational and realistic fanbase- fans, not professional coaches- should recognize the poor performance, piss poor coaching and pitiful preparation prevented proper progress.

I believe in Coach Collins.

that's some impressive alliteration.

Every time a "Genius Playcaller" from College goes to the NFL where there is a Salary Cap and the League is designed to create parity, those geniuses from College get a rude wake up call and many wish they could go back to college unless they just hate the Recruiting aspect or worrying about making Players go to Class.

Correct. Saban looks human when he doesn't have more talent than anyone on his schedule. The list is quite long of college guys failing in the pros and Urban will be on the list soon. The NFL and college are way too different. You are not consistently "out coaching or scheming" anyone in the NFL, but it happens every week in the college game. Since you do not like CPJ, I'll use Friedgen as an example. Did he out coach and scheme anyone? Sure looked like he did on a routine basis. He was a superior in game play caller. Coaches that also know how to manage the game clock and situational awareness gain an advantage as well in the college game.

However, if coaching is substantially equal as you said, then is recruiting the only difference between a powerhouse program and one that isn't? I see too much disparity between how teams are coached and what those teams do to believe that this is true. Recruiting matters the most for the college game, but a school that does not routinely get a steady influx of future NFL talent can compete with the right staff. If you really do believe that coaching is substantially equal, then how do you think that GT will ever compete with the better teams on its schedule since the school will not have the same level of talent?

@GT98

GT FB is surrounded by the 4th best Metro Area in the Country and the 4th best State for HS FB Talent.

We have to find a way to give these great Players and future NFL Players an inventive to choose to attend and Play FB for GT.

The Players are there, they are nearby, we just have to keep them home.

We don't have to necessarily out Recruit Bama-UGA-Clemson.

However , I do think we can "steal" or prevent Future NFL Players from going to Northwestern ( why didn't the previous HC get McGowan to GT out of HS?), ND, Michigan, Penn State, Pitt, Wiscy, Boston College, Stanford, UVa, North Carolina, Kentucky, Auburn, Tennessee, South Carolina, Arkansas, Miss State, Olé Miss, etc.

Future NFL Players from Ga HSs are all over the P5 landscape outside of Bama-UGA-Clemson, if we just get "more of our fair share" to stay at Home and Play at GT, we become a 10-win Program in very short order.

After that we get lucky and make a run at the CFP maybe once every 5 years when things "line up" for us.

I choose to be optimistic about GT FB.

tired of hearing excuses........we dont pressure the qb and until we do we are in deep kemchi.....course the excuse is we are young but this is the third yr of many folks in the trenches......have some concerns bout the offense but hey ....i am 150 miles away and all I see is Gibbs would be a great back if he was wiuth a average line...........I do give Jeff a boost for propagnda with Atlanta and 404 but it is wearing thin......we should be dook but who knows anymore..........wont get into uniforms but bet we wear our practice whites which are not old gold and white

Rlaphie was a great offensive coach and even won at Maryland...........He would have fit in as HC

Why didn't we simply out smart those better Players and have our Genius in Residence HC at that time just draw up genius playcalls?

So much for out- smarting and out-coaching making a huge difference like you claim it does?
Can someone explain why we're talking about coaching vs. players as if the answer for winning or losing is one or the other? To me it is obviously both, but with players weighted more heavily. Of course every once and a while there are upsets and out-scheming leads to an unexpected win. But...that's why they are called upsets, becuase most of the time the team that is supposed to win "on paper" actually does win (IMO because they have better players).

You big cried my post without responding to it. Again, in your words, if coaching is substantially equal, how do you expect to beat the teams with better talent on the schedule? By getting that talent to GT in (somewhat) equal measure? I'm well aware of the surrounding HS talent.

GT has competed and won against the heavyweights when it had game day superior coaching--Friedgen and Johnson often were able to significantly close the talent gap with superior playing calling, formations and schemes.

I too, choose to be optimistic about GT FB. However, my main source of negativity is that I think that Collins is a poor in game manager (this can improve as he gains more experience) and P-dope is not a very good coordinator (even w/the o-line issues). I hope that you are right and Collins gets somewhat equal talent as the heavyweights. Given that it hasn't happened at GT with any consistency (save a year here or there), since the Dodd days, I'm dubious that it will, but will happy to be wrong.

Seems that a better path for GT to compete with those programs is in addition to improving recruiting (which Collins gets an "A" mark for thus far) is to also have some top notch (in particular offensively) coordinators. Hope that big money guys can help pony up for such a hire for next season.

This is pure devils advocate, but if coaching were mostly equal you can beat teams with better talent that aren't playing up to their own level that particular day.

I used the example of upsets to illustrate a point. The majority of games are decided by teams of fairly equal talent. The team that prepared better, fought harder, and schemed better usually wins those close ones. Some like to boil that down to “outsmarting the other team” but that’s actually an oversimplification. XsOs matter and that we both seem to agree
on. Ditto talent.

We’ll if your favorite coach seems lacking in play calling, scheming, and game prep….maybe it’s more convenient to believe coaches barely ever outsmart one another.

Fair point, but that would likely only be the case in a game or two per season, not a sustainable advantage for a team. I understand the points he is making overall, just strongly disagree with the substantially equal coaching opinion.

Because sometimes the opponents’ Jimmies and Joes are just too good, regardless of any Xs and Os. CPJ didn’t become a worse coach after 2009, nor did he suddenly become an amazing coach again in 2014. Talent trumps coaching the majority of the time.

That being said, our offense under CPJ and Friedgen dramatically outperformed its talent level on a consistent basis. Our defense under Tenuta was also better than the sum of its parts. That’s coaching - period.

I am an optimist, as you are. CGC’s recruiting boost is big for the program. It’s just frustrating to watch us have much better players than we used to, yet get blown out by teams that we used to beat or at least compete with. It’s not pessimistic to expect better from our coaches, especially when we know it’s possible.

What you gonna believe? Vapspwi, or your lying eyes?

What’s your problem, dickbag? The announced attendance was 36K and change, and several people (not just me) have said it was the biggest crowd at BDS so far this season. Anybody that goes to games can tell you that we have late arriving crowds, and last week was no exception. The fact that a lot of people left early in a blowout should come as no surprise.

So why would you trust a couple of cherry-picked photos with no indication of when they were taken that only show parts of the stadium? Here’s one that shows more of the stadium taken a few minutes before kickoff, and somebody else posted one recently that showed all of the west stands.

Here’s one from the KSU game at about the same point in time.

If that was the biggest crowd of the year so far….enthusiasm is WAY down this year.

I big cried it because it had the "woe is me" undertones that you don't believe GT FB can ever have good Players and nice things so our only saving grace is to dive at the opponents kneecaps for 60 snaps every Game while burning Clock to shorten the Game, and hope that that is enough to win close or not get blown out

There are plenty of academic qualifiers within a 2Hr drive of our campus, we have to find a way to be more attractive to them for them to want to play for GT.

We do that by becoming a 9-win Program, then a 10-win Program while sending a decent amount of Players to the NFL.

Sending Players to that Sunday League is what makes your CFB Program attractive to HS FB Players.
