Helmet Front Wording Update: “ATL” to “Tech”

This is a good start to erasing the Tud and Gef stain on our program. They need to finish the job and get rid of the turf and give a new shirt or hat to anyone wearing the stupid ATL or 404 gear with Gef’s stupid logos on them and take the one stuff and burn it.
some homeless dude probably keeping himself warm with the ATL GT flag the AA sent us. i donated all that 404 öööö.

It’s not a bad idea to adopt the ATL/404 stuff alongside the long-standing Tech traditions. The problem is that Collins did the former at the expense of the latter, and the fact that he coached us into the toilet compounds the problem.

Some crotchety old dudes were butthurt about it from the start (“what about me, I have a 678 area code?”), and unfortunately the utter on-field failure of the Collins area has reinforced their belief that the branding idea was unsound. I’ll admit that I don’t want to see anything associated with the Collins era, either, but I’d be fine with finding our footing on the field again and then trying the branding thing again.

Unless GT and 150 Bobby Dodd Way uproot itself, the 404/ATL branding was here before Collins and will be here after him. Gailey, with a HUGE assist from Choice & other local players, did a really good making GT one of Atlanta teams and instead of just playing here

Speaking of marketing and how poor we are at it, How many are aware that GTFB currently:

2 of the highest paid players at their respective position in the NFL
(Waller & Mason)

Wrestling champ (Joe Anoai)

An Emmy Award winner (Osahon Tongo)

This is more my issue. I don't mind the ATL/404 stuff, but don't alienate the rest of the fanbase/alumni base in the process. Anytime a product has a value network (those that see value and purchase the product), you should try to broaden it while not sacrificing what you already have. The clown show was changing the game experience itself. Try building some activities around the game that appeal to the ATL/404 and leave the game itself alone. And, by the way, try winning some games before you change anything brand-wise.

And I'll go out on a limb and say none of these alum live in the 404. And furthermore, most of those living in the 404 don't give 2 sh*ts who those people are or care about college sports.

Georgia Tech is bigger than the ATL and bigger than the 404. Be Georgia Tech. Enjoy Atlanta. It makes a nice back drop especially for night games.

So what’s your pitch then? If not having top tier NFL guys or pitching that you can be anything as GTFB grad then what’s the appeal?

I think it's a great idea to promote the success of Tech grads, in sports and all others fields of endeavor. You pointed that out and I agree with you.

I was only saying that it has nothing to do with the 404 or ATL branding.

Having top tier NFL performers and successful alum in all areas of life is what Georgia Tech is all about. This is the message. That is Georgia Tech's brand.

"Don't change anything in order to win until you win."
We won before. We didn't need to "change anything to win."

Bobby Ross, even with 2 horrible transition years, went 31-26-1 in 5 seasons with 2 wins over UGA, an ACC championship and an MNC.
George O'Leary went 52-33 in 7 seasons with 3 wins over UGA, an ACC championship, and Gator Bowl win over ND.
Chan Gailey, the worse of the four, went 44-32 in 6 seasons with 0 wins over UGA, a divisional champ, and an ACC championship game appearance.
Paul Johnson went 82-60 in 11 seasons with 3 wins over UGA, an ACC championship, 2 other ACC CG's, a Gator Bowl win, and 2 Orange Bowls.

Those four coaches, from 1987 through 2018 (32 seasons) were a combined 209-151-1, with 8 wins over UGA (not good!), 3 ACC championships, 3 other ACC CG appearances, 2 Gator Bowl wins, 2 Orange Bowls, and an MNC.

ETA: I forgot to add in that we went to something on the order of 22 straight bowl games in that time.

Now... tell me again why things had to change to win....

I'll hang up and listen.

I get the whole ATL/404 appeal, since we weren’t known as Georgia’s or Atlanta’s team. However, all of that is gonna leave a real bad sour taste in my mouth after clown ruined everything. Hell, I can’t even enjoy going to Waffle House anymore.

That's your opinion. Just understand this is the point of departure between you and many others.

The data from the previous x-number of years is not on your side. Going back to Heisman, when GT began playing serious football in 1903, GA Tech has had exactly 3 head coaches who posted losing records: Bill Curry (1980-1986), Bill Lewis (1992-94), and Geof Collins (2019-22). Even Bud Carson, as poor a HC as he was, won as many as he lost.

What those three point to were the challenges that have arisen for college football in the last 40 years, and so there were certainly some improvements that needed to be made. I would consider the ATL/404 a needed improvement, not a rebranding. There was, and is, no need to "rebrand" GA Tech football. Gailey, as it turned out, was recruiting at a pretty high level for a pro-style offense at the end of his term. With consistent improvements, GA Tech football would have been just fine. Rad decided to go a bit of a radical direction with CPJ and it worked well overall with no rebranding. All of Collins' bluster and hype was just that, bluster and hype.
